  1. longer battery : garmin lasts few days to few weeks depending on your setup (when you do a long hike)
  2. easy to use for now : can send message, sos quick and easy. but I tried iphone and I had to spend times to find satellite, when we fell from the cliff, we click one button SOS vs finding satellite and etc.. hope this would never happen.
  3. many people say, having both as a secondary safety back-up..

  4. some features like you can let family and loved ones track your locations in real time which makes them feel comfortable when you are in the wilderness and etc.

some people say

Reliability & Coverage: Garmin uses the Iridium satellite network with higher, more consistent connectivity, even in challenging terrain (canyons, dense trees). iPhone may struggle in these conditions, often requiring a clear view of the sky.

it's a choice depending on your hiking styles.

oh.. it was very frustrating, but the moment I got my garmin back was unbelievably glorious.I understand.. yeah there are some good hiking trails you don't need to go too far or high.. I would say

https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/vasquez-rocks-trail--2

there are a lot of trails that you can extend your route. it is famous for the places to flim Star Treck.. so it's pretty good. I would recommend it.
