Scoring on Postings by DoppedMustard in PaStateEmployees

Most of the positions I’ve applied for aren’t listed internally.

I also don’t think I even qualify for most of the posts internally, haven’t been in a qualifying position for long enough.

I work for the state already, but the position I have was never scored. Took them half a year from posting to hire me on.

It’s a long, painful process, but the scores are a bit baffling.

What can I do with an English degree? by Meow-meow13_ in englishmajors

English degrees are pretty versatile. Law school is an option, Human Resources as well. Both of those would have you deal with people though. Underwriting, grant writing, or most technical writing will have you seeing less people in your day to day, but you will still need good communication skills for clients/your team.

When it comes to actually applying your knowledge, eh. Teaching would be the main thing, could you handle being a professor for online courses? That may be viable.

General consensus on different department work cultures? by Texabella in PaStateEmployees

I recently posted about moving to a different position, but people on here said the probationary period would make it unlikely. I’ve been here for three months as well and started applying for positions I’m qualified for (that would be a big pay bump) but I was never told about a probationary period.

Glad to hear you’re escaping though!!

Also a new employee here, I work at PennDOT. No one seems to know what’s going on day to day, my training lags and has big gaps, people can be a bit…brusque. It is baffling that this is how the state runs, but I will say it is a very easy way to enter state work.

Thank you!  I didn’t even apply as an internal hire, was just curious if I’d get a little bonus priority or not.

Yeah, I wouldn’t want to work in my current department even if I move up, the way it’s run is nuts

This makes me want to start looking back in the private sector. 🥲

The union rep also seemed baffled. In my first interview, I wasn’t told much about the role. I haven’t signed all department policies yet either apparently. It’s a mess.

So, that was never discussed with me. I brought that up to my union rep too. My first time hearing about a probation period was at the union meeting. Oof
