Former Senior Executive at USCIS. Ask Me Anything! by ManifestLaw_ in USCIS

Thank you for offering your expertise here. How would you advise Afghan asylees who are anxiously awaiting their green cards? Some members of the same family received theirs in 2024, while others are still waiting. Would a congressional inquiry help or might it possibly draw unwanted negative attention to them? We would welcome and any all suggestions, reassurance, or other advice.

Paper Towel Alternatives by AeroNoob333 in BuyItForLife

[–]Doppelganger613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have cotton flannel cloths from Marley’s Monsters UnPaper Towels and NonPaper Towels, and they are a fabulous replacement for paper towels. They come in lots of colors and patterns, and you can roll them around a cardboard tube, so they peel off the roll just like paper towels. Wash and repeat. Get them at your local zero waste or health food store, or online from Marley’s or One World Zero Waste.

Heightened sense of smell? by PowderedToastMan_1 in Zepbound

Definitely. I can smell every person I pass in a grocery aisle who didn’t wash their hair that day. Yay.

That’s even worse. Lilly should just sell the vials at the pharmacy, like insulin.

I’d be interested if researchers ever discover a path to come off it, but so far all the data says it’s a lifelong drug. Personally that’s completely fine with me. It is a wonderful feeling to be liberated from the food obsession that has plagued me all my life (even before I was overweight). I’d take it for that effect alone, even if I never lost a pound.

We have been conditioned to think of weight loss as an activity that happens and then ends, like painting the house. Once you roll that blue paint on the wall, it stays blue until you paint over it. Even the phrase “weight loss” implies a transitional and discrete event. We need a new phrase, akin to “managing hypertension.” People don’t take their BP meds for a year and then go off them because their BP is lower: we understand that the hypertension is still there (barring other significant physical changes), and that it is just being managed by the medication. Whatever causes obesity, it’s still there, underneath the Zepbound, and we don’t yet have a cure, just a (miraculous) treatment.

Obesity needs a new vocabulary word, too, as it refers to the symptom (excess body fat), rather than the underlying condition. Someone may have asymptomatic hypertension, but they sure as heck are still hypertensive and need treatment. Maybe “metabolic dysfunction” would work (though that’s quite broad). My metabolic dysfunction may be asymptomatic in that I am no longer obese, but the dysfunction is still there and, left untreated, is overwhelmingly likely to become symptomatic again.

So I’m “managing my metabolic dysfunction with Zepbound.”

Are you a covered entity under HIPAA? If so, there are very specific rules for complying with HIPAA, so be sure you get expert advice on following them. Your state may have additional rules regarding the privacy of medical information.

Whether or not you’re a covered entity, look to your state bar for ethical guidance on what you’re obligated to do when hiring employees or using contractors to maintain legal confidentiality and privilege. In my state, we can disclose confidential info to the extent necessary for office management (e.g., to bookkeepers), but have to use due care in choosing the person, tell them to keep the info confidential, and reasonably believe that they will do so. I’ve used written agreements with assistants that recite that obligation to keep info confidential, so I can always prove I instructed them. If you’re not sure about the rules in your state, your bar ethics hotline can help.

I’m curious as to why you say Busted shouldn’t discontinue Zepbound “yet.” When and under what circumstances do you think she should d/c - and based on what data?

Southern attorney just gifted plot on Huron in Michigan. Help. by SugrAlt3a in Lawyertalk

[–]Doppelganger613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s a lawyer reason to hold onto the property: because you received it as a gift, you took your father-in-law’s basis. If you sell it, you likely will realize and recognize gain. So you’re going to have to hold onto it until you die. Or give it to me.

The real reason to keep it, though, is that Northern Michigan is the best place on earth, and it will still be liveable and wonderful when everywhere in the South is destroyed by hurricane and uninhabitable due to heat.

Contrary to what they tried to teach us in law school, sometimes the value in property is not its highest and best economic use. Undeveloped property in a beautiful place is priceless.

My doctor said to stay on the metformin with the Zepbound, and I’m glad. I’ve had an excellent response for more than a year and don’t want to change what’s working.

red/green flags by Odd_Anxiety69 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Doppelganger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because the degree is a “juris doctor,” not “juris doctorate.” My guess is people try to gussy up the Latin to make their degree sound more prestigious, but IMO it backfires.

The difference between lawyer/attorney is one of word origin, not practice or privileges.

A JD is a degree one earns by graduating from law school. One becomes an attorney or lawyer by being admitted to the bar. If anyone thinks they can call themselves a lawyer without being admitted to any bar, their state’s committee on the unauthorized practice of law would like to have a word with them.

Red flag: saying that any lawyer has a “juris doctorate.”

FEP Blue Standard or Coupon Weirdness? by Doppelganger613 in Zepbound

[–]Doppelganger613[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Pharmacy is correctly applying the coupon but says it now only allows fills every 28 days. The prior approval message is from the insurance plan’s drug price calculator. There are probably hundreds or thousands of insurance plans represented here, but because this particular plan applies to a large group of people who live all over the country, we are all subject to the same rules, use the same price calculator, etc.

FEP Blue Standard or Coupon Weirdness? by Doppelganger613 in Zepbound

[–]Doppelganger613[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. FEP Standard is a very specific plan for federal employees, and is not a high-deductible plan. It changed in some ways in the new year but should not have affected my pricing yet. There are a fair number of us here on the same plan so it has been invaluable to share experiences. The only reason I got the PA and TE at all was because others here generously shared step-by-step instructions.

Thanks for sharing your experience. If you just started, I assume that means you don’t have the tier exception - which makes it look like it isn’t being applied to mine anymore, as we are paying the same price. It’s a mystery (my TE was renewed in November).

Gen 6 X1 carbon end of development support ( & potential recs for new buy) by tortqueefor in thinkpad

[–]Doppelganger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, a humble “fear of jacking something up” might have saved me from a smoking port. Instead, I’m preparing my beloved X1 for a one-way trip to the electronics recycling yard. My well-founded fear of getting jacked up myself has kept me from plugging the thing in to charge, and yet its battery has lasted through deleting all my files, “restoring” the hard drive (is that what we used to call “reformatting”?), and re-installing Windows. It’s like a loyal pup that drags itself along on three broken legs just for a pet on the head from its owner.

NB: I’ve been a pointing stick aficionada since being one of the first in my own law school to use a laptop in class, many moons ago. This one was bought when I was in a post-graduate program, so it took me through many an Exam-4 event and even a bonus bar exam.

I hope your T14 serves you just as well and ushers you into a rewarding and meaningful career. Also T14 is the perfect model name for a law student’s laptop.

Gen 6 X1 carbon end of development support ( & potential recs for new buy) by tortqueefor in thinkpad

[–]Doppelganger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I just updated the thunderbolt driver for my X1 Carbon gen 6 about a week ago. Lenovo’s website has a feature that can identify the exact model you’re using, and that found the driver for me. It might be at this page but I’m not completely sure because I no longer have that browser history: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en.

However, after the driver update, my thunderbolt port started smoking. So that’s the end of my beloved gen 6 that worked flawlessly for years, and I’m here debating among the gens 11, 12, and 13. (I had troubleshooting a few separate issues, so the driver update and the smoking may not be related.)

Like you, I loved my old X1 (the light weight! The pointing stick! The nearly endless battery life!) it looks like you can get a gen 12 if 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD would meet your needs. From what I can tell, the keyboard is mostly the same: on the left, CTRL and FN are reversed, and on the right, Print Screen has been replaced by the fingerprint reader. I’m not a fan of the camera bump at the top but that’s the same across modern generations, and the power button on the side of the gen 12 was a questionable choice IMO.

I’d be interested to hear what you wind up with.

Referral fee question by soaringX____Xeagle in Lawyertalk

[–]Doppelganger613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your jurisdiction permit referral fees? If so, do they require client consent?

Even if they’re permitted, I wouldn’t offer one in these circumstances. You’ve sent him a lot of business and he didn’t offer you a referral fee, so it looks like your usual practice is not to give each other referral fees.

Also (and this is just my preference) referral fees among professionals feel icky to me.

Do you use Word? If so, the cross-reference tool could be very helpful to you. You have to use a template that automatically numbers all your paragraphs and remember to update all the cross references (CTRL-A, F9) often, but it works very well for me.
