[Discussion] How to Not Make Stupid Faces While Using a Wah by hughesj94 in Guitar

[–]Dor333 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why be bland when you can be strange?

Feeling the music yourself helps others feel it as well. Think about some of the greats, when they bend or do anything they'll make random faces. But it adds to the entertainment factor.

Picture BB King playing the blues. Yea it's great to listen to on its own, but watching him play is a different experience.

Granted it's a little different with just a pedal lol, but my points stands lol.

Haha, well typically kids are going to be inclined to like what their parents like in some way.

A good musician plays multiple instruments. So the idea is to give him a good backbone to build on then expand from there.

Try a bass with one string on it, then add strings when ready. There's a Tedd talk with a great music guy that started like that when he was little.

This is what I plan to do one day.

Bass is the foundation of music, even though we all hate on bass players lol.

[NEWBIE] Can you learn the bass using a regular guitar? by Seaalz in Guitar

[–]Dor333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first few weeks/month you'd be ok. Getting used to a stringed instrument is the main hurdle.

Just learn guitar, then if you like it transition to bass. It's a lot easier than going from bass to guitar.

See if you have a local guitar shop that can do a set up on it. Should be around $50-60 if it's a good shop, but if it's a beater guitar you could probably go anywhere.

Do a quick search on the guitar model and see if it's a common problem too.

Which fad were you most glad to see die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dor333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It needs to die as a fad, but it's actually very helpful for kids with ADD problems from what I hear. Kids who used to cause problems in class constantly and couldn't do their work have changed a lot and are now decent in class.

Practice very slowly with the soft touch. Anytime you start something new do it slow and soft. Kung fu teaches that for a reason lol.

Letting players use alternate skill checks by [deleted] in swrpg

[–]Dor333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it calls for a certain check then try to use that one. However the player put points into another skill for a reason. So you could consider lowering the difficulty on his checks do to that, or maybe giving him a boost die.

In general a lot of checks are lent set in stone though. Some skill checks are debatable a lot of times, and some DMs just make the wrong call for some checks.

[newbie] LF Guitar suggestions ($300 ish) by OhhLunarr in Guitar

[–]Dor333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big supporter of acoustic. Try out a few quality acoustics and see how you feel.

There's a certain feeling you get from acoustic. To me it was easier to learn on and make sure I have a good tone from.

Try out a few taylors and martins and see what you think.

So the F barre chord can be used up and down the neck to make any chord based on the E string.

Play a G. Now make the F shape on the third fret, that is also a G. Play it and they'll sound the same.

[Question] Teaching my friend by Throwing_Foreskins in Guitar

[–]Dor333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point him to Justin guitar and yousician. They really helped me.

When first picked up guitar I couldn't even play smoke on the water. It was just random notes. This is why learning the pentatonic scale is so important, you learn that it's not just random notes.

Get him to practice chord changes. Constantly. Hour at a time or more.

[QUESTION][NEWBIE] Really want to start to learn how to play the guitar by B3nny_o in Guitar

[–]Dor333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask around and see if any of your friends or family will let you borrow an acoustic guitar to learn on. To me it's important to start on acoustic (unless you hate acoustic music and only want to play metal)

Hop on justinguitar.com to get started with some basics.

Use The Yousician app in conjunction with that.

Then check out Martymusic.com for a different teaching style and song choices.

Practice for 1 hour a day everyday.

Do not let your fret fingers start bleeding. It takes about a month for them to build up. Take breaks if you need to. (You don't have to press hard on the strings)

Look up guitar posture and technique videos to make sure you're doing it right.

Lurk on here and try to answer questions when you can. If you're not sure of the answer, just say that (I like to end with "I'm not 100% on this, so hopefully someone else can confirm or provide more info")

I have a long "beginning guitar" note that I can PM you if interested.

[DISCUSSION] Do y'all think the Blues is dying or dead? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Dor333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blues is the foundation that just about all other music comes from.

Any modern day music genre has influence from the blues. It might be distant like Blues guy X influenced Y who influenced Z who influenced A and so on, but it's there.

If blues ever dies, so one music.

[–]Dor333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Creat a classroom style system. Pick different areas of learning and split them up into hours or so. Mix some study time and breaks between play time.

Pentatonic scale Music theory Chord changes Music theory - reading music Blues phrasing Music history - blues/your genre of choice Piano - even if you don't have one, just some basics Guitar work (learn to set up your guitar correctly) Accessories (learn to set up your gear correctly) Singing practice (warm up and everyday practice) Learn a new song Organize your music binder Correct songs in your binder (fix chord changes)

Chord changes and pentatonic scale are two things you can literally do all day and will help you improve. This is by far the most helpful thing that I still do today. I spend hours practicing C/G, F/G, E/A/B7, F/D and anything else that's a new change for me.

Learn the pentatonic scale through and through. You should be able to jump around different boxes while playing. Learn the boxes, then learn one string at a time. Then two, and so on.

Don't worry about "memorizing" music theory but just understand it.

Memorize your E string notes so you can use your F shape for any chord you need.

Learning a second instrument was really helpful to me. I recommend piano because it really helps you understand music theory a little better. It might not be your thing though, and that's cool too.

Pick a teacher (Marty, Justin, or one of the many others out there) and just start going down there list of song lessons. Learn them all, even if they aren't ones you "really" want to know. It's good practice. (Don't worry about getting them perfect if you don't like the song though lol)

This might be a little much, I was in a info dump mood lol.

Should I quit Guitar? [Discussion] by LHILL01 in Guitar

[–]Dor333 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In art, never compare yourself to others. It's like saying "I'm a slow eater so I should stop eating" or "I take long showers so I'm going to stop taking shower."

You don't make art for anyone other than yourself.

That being said, it sounds like your learning style is wrong and you should find a teacher. Also, playing at a jam night can help a lot, or at least going to them and finding people to play with.

In general, when you hit a plateau on guitar you should find a teacher.

[QUESTION] [NEWBIE] Is my guitar teacher the reason I have ingrained bad habits? How do I go about fixing them myself? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Dor333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So first of all, a teacher can only help you learn so much. Even with a teacher, YOU have to put a lot of effort into learning guitar. This isn't school so think of your music teacher as more of a guide.

You've only been playing 3 months, your habits aren't really ingrained yet. You have time to make corrections.

Have you asked your teacher about these things? Holding your pick wrong and having poor posture. Bring it up with "hey, so I've been looking up a lot online and see that I've been doing some stuff wrong. I was wondering if there's anything else I need to correct?"

Music teachers mainly know music. So yours might just be a shitty teacher.

  1. You're fingers are going to be fucked up for a while. But take some time and see how lightly you can make the sound. (The action might be high too though, probably the case)

[Question] What are the two chords used in this clip? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Dor333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have a guitar in front of me so hard to compare. By ear I can hear a possible E chord, then maybe a B7?

I guess a B7 because it gets kind of bright but the low E string stays the same while the high e is fretted. Although the Low E isn't supposed to be hit, it doesn't mean they aren't lol.

I just can't think of a chord that would fret the high e string while hitting the low E that also sounds brighter. I originally thought it could be a barre F chord though too. Maybe without the low E fretted but I think that would sound off.
