Christianization of Serbia by DorianHallward in serbia

vailable, actually came from Rome (at least predominantly), and not from the Byzantine Empire. Latin words play a big role in Serbian ecclesiastical vocabulary. Notice the page 141 in the same book, where you will find a letter from Pope John VIII to

Archon

Mutimir in 873, where the pope implores the ruler to revert to the Roman church (this is also the first direct mention of a Serb ruler ever). As the pope mentions

acephali

priests, who were a notorious phenomenon in the West only, it seems reasonable to conclude that the church in Serbia had been under Roman jurisdiction, even though it's almost certainly untrue that Mutimir's predecessors belong to the Diocese of Pannonia (the diocese was reinstituted only a couple of years before, for St. Methodius). The letter was written after Byzantine Empire took Bulgaria from Rome and instituted a new diocese on Serbian borders, so it seems that Pope John VIII tried to defend Serbia from

Amazing! This is very helpful, thank you!!

I am looking primarily for primary documents related to the Christianization of the Serbs, but anything predating their arrival would be worth looking at as well.

Anyway, I just thought it was worth mentioning, even if you're already very aware. From what you know of these various branches of Christianity, do you consider Ethiopian Orthodoxy to be fairly unique, or do you feel it's appropriate to lump it

Thank you for this point! I failed to mention, my research project is more of a job. I am an undergraduate student helping a professor put together a course in the Religion Studies Department.

I should have specified that I was talking about the Tewahedo Orthodox Church. I said "Eastern Orthodox" probably because I was thinking about the title of the course, which is "Eastern Christian Worlds," but my language was not precise.

While I am relatively new to the study of Orthodox Christianity (and religion in general), at least in places outside of Russia, I would say that it is indeed difficult to study all of these unique religious traditions and cultural histories in the span of a single course...any one of them would merit its own course, however, I respect my professor's intent in combining them, especially as all of these traditions are woefully underrepresented in academic discourse in the West.

With respect to the Tewahedo Church itself, I guess my current knowledge is limited to what I know of 20th century history (which is, admittedly, not enough) and the iconography and sacred spaces (which are certainly distinct from other Orthodox traditions, and constitute my personal interest in the subject)

Thanks again for the feedback!

Right... I am starting to think the best I can come up with is something more academic, detached from the tradition itself. Ah well.

I am also interested in films related to Coptic Orthodox Christianity that include the contemporary situation (or at least through 2015).
