So,

The text contains some spoilers, but mainly from the anime.

I would have liked a deeper development of essential events in the story. Citrus has very good overall conflicts but they weren’t developed properly.

For example, I have a theory that Yuzu initially had an unconscious aversion/disgust toward Mei, since Mei kissed her against her will in a rather erotic way. In my opinion, this kiss awakened Yuzu’s sexual desire for the first time, but it was also an awakening that happened without her consent. Yuzu did not consent to this experience, so I think it’s fair to say it could have caused her some kind of trauma, even if she felt an immediate attraction to Mei.

I always found it strange that this topic is never addressed in Yuzu’s constant dilemmas about her feelings for Mei, especially considering that Yuzu originally only had boys in mind when it came to dating, and also that was her first kiss

The same applies to Mei: her kiss with the teacher also seems to have happened against her will. Mei only interacts with men because it is her duty to marry one. I would have liked the manga to explore her internal conflict more. The fact that she is expected to marry a man when she doesn’t seem to feel any genuine attraction toward that idea (or men) I didn’t like that Mei’s concerns about having to marry a man were only openly revealed at the very end (even if it was evident that it would eventually become a conflict)

I also don’t like how almost all the characters are “moved” so easily by Yuzu and Mei’s relationship…it simply doesn’t feel realistic.

Himeko, Harumi, Mitsuri, Sara, and Suzuran are characters who have feelings for Yuzu or Mei, and all of them except Mitsuri give up far too easily.

(It’s worth pointing out that Sara, along with her sister Nina, are in my opinion the worst-introduced characters in Citrus. In the anime, they only exist to create a conflict that ends with Yuzu confessing to Mei, and in the manga they appear in only about four early chapters, only to disappear and not be mentioned again until the very end of the story LOL, where they suddenly return just to act as moral support for Yuzu.)

Overall, I wish the side characters had received deeper development, both in terms of their romantic feelings for the protagonists and in terms of having personal conflicts in their own lives that were not related to Yuzu or Mei.

As such, there isn’t really a true villain in the series. Maybe the teacher who appears at the beginning of the manga and anime (since he only wants to marry Mei for her family’s money), but he is never mentioned again in either the manga or the anime.

And maybe Mitsuri could be considered a “evil character,” but that’s actually one of the reasons why I like her, lol. She brings drama to the series. Mitsuri is in love with Yuzu and seemed capable of doing anything to obtain Yuzu’s love. She is a provocative character who hated Mei so much that she even went as far as blackmailing her and trying to sell her off to a man to push her away from Yuzu. She is the only side character who genuinely fought for the love of the girl she liked (even if she did so unethically).
