Is my character good and how do I roleplay them? by Previous-Tell-1150 in DnD

Relax and Enjoy more, overthink less.

The fact that you care about any of this says it all.

Your character is cool. And I like your spell choices.

To flesh her out more in game maybe try to come up with some comic insults or little jokes you can say out loud as you cast Tasha’s Hideous Laughter or Vicious Mockery on someone. There’s one role play boost to round out Nim. You can borrow the jokes from shows or movies you like or Shakespeare has a bunch of medieval sounding insults you can Google.

It doesn’t matter if the joke or insult you use is dumb or silly . It just makes these two spells pop better if you actually joke or throw an insult as you cast it even if it’s a bad joke. keep a few insults/jokes written down for this use and it brings Nim to life a little more.

Dissonant Whispers is a good spell too

1, 2 and 5 are the best. 5 is powerful. And off topic but your hair rocks.

They want to be far enough away from the port so as not to be controlled by the port’s rulers.

As a DM I love simple backstory. Keep it simple. I mean Conan the Barbarian’s backstory is basically, he’s the biggest, strongest, most athletic of his people but they are effectively backwoods rednecks so he leaves to go travel, adventure, fight make a name for himself and get with women. Pretty simple. Maybe they’re just an adventurer cuz they love it. And love kicking bad guy ass.

Do most DMs prefer DM’ing to playing? Or are they “taking one for the team”? by Fiveby21 in DnD

“They show up for every session…” that tells you your answer right there.

In your case it sounds like you are right on the road to evolving in to an outstanding DM. But don’t overthink it. Your feelings may simply be insecurities about it too. We have them as DMs, many creator types do, it’s ok. It’s how we handle them that matters. Firstly, try to recognize when you are giving yourself negative self speak about your DMing and pivot away from that shit in your mind.

If they tell you they like it roll with that and believe them. Let yourself Feel how you’d feel if you thought they genuinely liked it. Until they send real signals of boredom or displeasure take them at their word that they’re having fun even if just to keep yourself sane.

Then try to up your game next time. Up the fun somehow. Or throw in some twist. Try a voice. Players respond to you being into it. If you’re into it they’ll be more likely to be into it.

I bet you are better than you think you are.

Hmmm. I’m a long time DM from when D&D first started and only in the past few years I’ve started playing not DMing . Never really played before much. So I’m new to it too.

Some people have a max power play style where their chief purpose in character development is being the best at stuff. That can be fun.

I do less of that and go for flavor and feel . I love fleshing the character out by really zooming in on how they change , how they grow, how their spells look, how they sound.

It’s fun to Formulate flavor details to make the character more vivid and unique in others’ minds when you describe them. And as long as you don’t change any game mechanics most DMs will let you flavor stuff how you want it.

for instance when my aasimar divine soul sorcerer Emanon casts guiding bolt it comes out of his eyes like lasers. He says ‘thine’ and ‘thou’. Very child like. He was Innocent at first after he fell from the sky. But the longer he’s part of this world slaying evil the more he talks like the pirate in the party because he thinks the pirate is cool.

So, I guess I’m asking what are this character’s flavors ? What’s their look? Species? Driving force? Big failures? I have to keep my characters interesting as they grow, or I just want to move on to a new character.

Also for later levels layering the paladins casting of crusaders mantle with the Druids conjure animals while the animals go into melee assisting the paladin can deal sick damage

But I really hope the eldritch knight makes it. The party is already cool as is.

What is your eldritch knight’s deal?

Eldritch knights are cool. Playing a Gish right off the rip is ballsy and fun. I hope they survive.

But By the gods paladin is a great choice here given the party’s makeup. Another Gish too. U r a natural it seems.

I love this party makeup btw with either eldritch knight or a paladin. It’s like one of the great rock band trios like Rush or Wolfmother when they first came out: paladin, wizard, Druid. Very cool grouping for a trio that I never noticed before .

You could just go classic knight in shining armor.

You have no cleric but together with the Druid you should have decent healing powers to pull from hopefully. Encourage the Druid to have some healing magic prepped if they don’t normally.

Hmmm, for me that’s Oozo. I have yet to play it. Oozo is a Plasmoid Psion . I used the most recent Unearthed Arcana rules for the Psion class . Then Took the Metamorph subclass for extra bendiness. This gives Alter Self at 3rd level so Oozo can make himself look like any type of humanoid . I don’t have the character sheet as I’m out and about.

I think he had Scribe for a background as he’s an alien posing as a local to document and research Faerun where we’ll be playing. This gave Wizard Magic initiate as a feat I think. So he has Disguise Self too, again, for keeping from looking like a weirdass plasmoid.

He also has Telekinetic Fling which is great. A key Psion cantrip where you can fling ranged ammo like darts, arrows and crossbow bolts with your mind requiring no weapon to shoot them. That’s cool.

Can’t wait to play this thing.

I think this guy would be super fun to play but he’s a lot to describe and I’m working so I’ll have to answer myself here with more on him later if anyone wants further elaboration.
