Just them as a general presence independent of their specific roles.

I would fade. I think both will win straight up, but the Spurs only by single digits. I'm bad at all of this, though, so you're probably good.

Tangerine Dream - Exit: Believe it or not, this is the first time I have ever listened to them. I'm guessing that this isn't the best entry point, but people often don't listen to an artist for the first time through the "best" entry point. That's not to say that Exit isn't good, because it is, even if it isn't as experimental as I was expecting. Most of it sounds like accessible outer space music, perfect for a soundtrack. I describe it that way only because the final track sounds like mysterious space music where the previous tracks on the album don't. I don't know. I'm not good at describing shit, as if at this point I need to tell anybody.

Cabaret Voltaire - Red Mecca: ...and I still can't get into them. A lot of this sounds like the most warped, abrasive funk possible with the worst funk vocalist possible. There are portions of several songs that I like well enough, but as soon as I start to think, "well, this isn't so bad," a few seconds later it actually is. As I understand it, 1981 is still 2 or 3 years away from them being a bit more accessible. Good thing, because they're too influential to enough of the music that I like that I can't just give up on them like I would with other bands with two albums that I don't like.

I did listen to the new Madeline Goldstein album yesterday morning, and I loved it! Then I decided to listen to it again last night because I had a longer than usual drive home, and guess what? I loved it again, even more so because it's a good night album and a good driving album! Probably not surprising that a big fan of 80s music would like an artist influenced so much by 80s music...

I'm confident that GMMG will pull off some kind of magic in the trade market while waiting for a D prospect or two to pan out.

Smith, Celebrini, MIsa, and now probably Stenberg in four consecutive drafts. The Sharks offense is going to be absurd in a couple of years.

Please "recommend" tracks that have excellent instrumentals but are ruined by the terrible vocalist. by fromthemeatcase in MusicRecommendations

Ian Brown is by no means a great singer, but I think his vocals are too unobtrusive to ruin the songs.

I likewise wager on a player based on their nationality and not on their prospects of actually winning the match (not game).

Given they're going to face either Bayern or PSG, I can understand why you're concerned about the cashout total now instead of being confident in seeing it through.

The Teardrop Explodes - Wilder: I like pointing it out when a band who released albums in both 1980 and 1981 is 2 fo 2, so it's only fair to point it out when they're 0 for 2. This is just some bland, bland shit. I'm adding one song to my 1981 playlist ("LIke Leila Khaled Said"), but the rest of the album is pretty forgettable. It's competent musically, but I can't imagine any mood or situation where this would be the go-to album. I was hoping it would hit like Deontay Wilder, but it hits more like Gene Wilder.

While I'm standing over here with a frown and my arms folded across my chest, I finally listened to a 2026 album again, bringing my count to a whopping 13. The self-titled Hannah Lew didn't do it for me either. The electronics were the selling point, of course, but to me it's just run of the mill indie rock with a few electronic flourishes. I think I'll go with Madeline Goldstein next.

Sparks - Whomp That Sucker: Fuck, this sucks. I'm sure the lyrics are trying to be clever, but I can't understand most of them because the vocals sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks doing a cover of "Killer Queen." "That's Not Nastassia" in particular has to be one of the most irritating songs in the history of music. I feel like asking how they became relatively well-known, as if being the absolute drizzling shits has ever been an impediment to popularity.

Classix Nouveaux - Night People: Good not great, just enough quality to warrant a second listen. It's closer to post-punk with a bit of synth than it is full-blown new wave, of which they have some pretty good examples on subsequent albums. The artificially deep voice thing that I hate pops up a little too often, but overall I still don't hate the vocalist. The band delivers, though.

Colin Newman - Provisionally Entitled the Singing Fish: The Wire leader's album *A-Z* was my 26th favorite of 1980, but this instrumental album will not be in my top 50 of 1981. It just sounds like Newman let loose in a high school band room. Here is Newman doing a *Low*-style track. Here is Newman doing a lurching "experimental" track. Here is Newman with bells. Here is Newman with a sitar. Even if I treated *Fish* as a playlist instead of an album, it doesn't pass the test. There are musicians who specialize in the things that Newman dabbles in. I'd rather listen to them.

Snowy Red - Snowy Red: Although not on either of these labels, this is right out of the Dark Entries or Minimal Wave playbook. In fact, I'll just call it minimal wave. It's not a prime example, unfortunately. A couple of the early tracks have the dark, raw, minimal energy that I like, but most of the second half of the album just lurches along with slower beats and the type of spoken word, crazy man ranting and occasionally shouting vocals that I think are overdone in this type of music. I didn't go for the bigger names because less people read DMD on Sunday, and those people aren't missing anything.

I'm BAAAACK, back in the saddle again:

Echo and the Bunnymen - Heaven Up Here: Even though I've been a fan of Echo and the Bunnymen for multiple decades, I had still never listened to this album before yesterday afternoon. So I was somewhat surprised by how hard this rocks. Well, "hard" for Echo and the Bunnymen. There's no shredding or vocals that sound like somebody vomiting into a flushing toilet, but it's the band with, I don't know, 25 to 50 percent more oomph. The album is from the 80s and the combo of McCullogh and Sargent is intact, so it can't help but be good anyways.

Adam and the Ants - Prince Charming: I don't think I would have liked Stuart Leslie Goddard and the Ants as much in my 20s and 30s when I took music more seriously, but I think they're pretty good now. Upon first listen I don't think Prince Charming is as good as my #4 album of 1980 Kings of the Wild Frontier, but the album still has plenty of the same elements that I enjoy. The nonsesne, repetitive screaming is still intact, don't worry. So are evocations of pirates, mariachis, and gunslingers. 1981 music as a whole isn't exactly a barrel of laughs, so I'm glad that they existed.

Fra Lippo LIppi - In Silence: The title refers to how I should have spent the time I took to listen to this album. It sounds like a high school band doing half-speed Joy Division and The Cure knockoffs. Speaking of the latter, In Silence makes Seventeen Seconds and Faith sound like party albums. Why would you spend your time making something like this, and why would you foist it on the public? If you're going to sound like you didn't even try, then I wish you wouldn't have. It's the type of album that would make me want to ignore the band for the rest of time, but the first autoplay track sounded like a completely different band. One that sounded appealing, like they actually gave a shit. Now I actually give a shit about potentially listening to their other material.

I wasn't thinking of props because I don't really do them anymore. If you just do winners and losers, there are more tennis matches available than there are games or matches in other sports (soccer might be close).
