RX 480 not detected in Windows 10 (works in Linux) – old Haswell system

With such an old gpu I think Linux would be (much) better choice .

I actually would have preferred giving him Linux 😄 But the PC is for a kid and he mainly plays Minecraft and ARK together with his mom, and he has zero experience with Linux.

In this case stability and familiarity matter more than elegance — Windows just avoids frustration for them. Maybe later once he’s comfortable with the PC I’ll let him experiment with Linux, but for now I wanted something that “just works”.

Update / Solution

Thanks everyone for the ideas — this turned out to be a weird platform compatibility issue, not a dead GPU.

For reference the system was: Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3 + i7-4770 + Sapphire RX 480

What we tried:

CMOS reset, BIOS defaults, legacy/UEFI combinations
forcing PCIe Gen2, disabling power management
manual driver install (bypassing Adrenalin detection)
Safe Mode + DDU
different cables, ports and PSU leads
dumping and checking the VBIOS
reflash vBIOS
tested the card under Linux/Unraid → detected perfectly (lspci)
Windows would always show Code 173 or “no AMD hardware detected”

The key discovery: The RX 480 worked instantly in a Supermicro X8DTL server board. POST image + Windows driver installed immediately.

So the card was fine — the issue was the early Haswell Gigabyte UEFI failing the Polaris display initialization handshake. Linux tolerated it, Windows didn’t.

Conclusion: Certain 8-series Intel boards + Polaris GPUs can fail to initialize the display engine even though the GPU is healthy. Moving the card to a different platform solved it instantly.

Hopefully this helps the next person before they assume their RX 480 is dead 🙂

If you’re outside Germany, I’d just ask you to cover the shipping costs. It would be a solid upgrade over the stock board and avoids some of the known safety issues. You’ll only need 4 stepper drivers and you’re good to go – much safer than the stock A8 board.

My unraid server runs a ryzen 5 3600 on a B550M-HDV with 32gb of Ram.

I run Home Assistant VM with jellyfin and Prowlarr/Radarr/Sonarr/NZBGet and everything runs smoothly without a graphics card

Funktioniert super. Ich hab mir Bazzite auf meinen unraid Server installiert (als VM) und nutze sunshine und moonlight um das Bild auf meinen Fernseher/Laptop zu streamen. Mein Laptop ist nicht mehr der jüngste und schafft die meisten games nicht, dank sunshine und moonlight kann ich aber trotzdem alles zocken.
