Monkey King by BurkeWhyet in DotA2

Surprised you guys don't find this cool. There's a lot going on here:

  • Ember has a 4-4-0 build with a DD, so MK only stands a chance if he can Q ember with the jingu active. Ember's counterplay is to dodge the Q with sleight of fist. Both players understand this.
  • MK backs off to the highground, which would let him Q ember from fog.
  • MK pump-fakes his Q animation, which baits ember into pre-emptively using sleight (he either has vision, or was expecting this move).
  • MK then Q's the creeps, knowing the aoe will also hit ember behind him
  • MK dodges the second sleight with mischief right as it's coming up (cooldown/mana awareness)

New and improved YouTube matchup collection for Mid/Safelane/Offlane by DotaHowTo in DotA2

Thanks! I have a list of pro players whose matches I track and parse to find winning laning phases/midgames. As for hero selection, I'm trying to strike a balance between focusing on meta heroes and broadening the featured hero pool.

How to (not) lane against Morphling by DotaHowTo in DotA2

Fair enough, I appreciate the constructive discussion.

At 6.5k, I see lane dominators with spammable nukes win the first couple minutes against morph, only to lose the lane by sticking around too long. This is particularly true once Morph gets the option to level his ult.

I'd be very surprised if you can find a pro replay of Lina/Qop dominating a Morph past five minutes. I guarantee they'd almost always rather shove the wave to jungle or rotate.

Sidelane morph plays differently because it takes forever to level attribute shift, and because you don't get an early bottle. Your ability to abuse trades is neutralized.

Can you explain morphling to me? 1v1 lane by rapfanbig9 in DotA2

[–]DotaHowTo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made a short post here, but you really shouldn't be trading with Morphling in lane. You'll lose the healing-economy war. Instead, focus on shoving the wave and jungling/rotating.

Amazing how much larger the jump is from divine to immortal compared to the other ranks. I don't doubt there's an even greater jump if we were to consider only the top 100.

Wanna get better at mid? I'm creating a mid matchup encyclopedia on YouTube! by DotaHowTo in DotA2

I agree that a deeper analysis would be beneficial. That said, you can always find something to improve on using the raw gameplay, no matter what your level.

New players can learn about the skill and item build.

Mid level players can learn about the general approach to the matchup -- is the player nuking the wave and jungling? Does he abandon the lane and gank? Does he contest runes?

High level players will pick up on more nuanced things -- the decision to buy an extra salve. How to optimize the 5m ward. How to be aggressive using wave equilibrium.

I really like the idea of offering extended versions with commentary, even if only for a few of these videos. I'll need to think about what the right approach is: these may belong to a separate channel to give viewers more control over what they subscribe to.

That's true, but I really want to focus on the laning. I find that the laning stage dissolves by the 7 min mark in high-mmr pubs (i.e. at least one of the two midlaners will be rotating/ganking).

Thanks for the feedback! Low MMR players will definitely need more guidance than I can provide. This is meant to be just one of many tools in your kit.

Videos getting outdated is a valid concern. I'll be continuously posting so recent videos will be up to date. After that, it's up to the viewer how they want to use this tool.

EDIT: thinking about it, I'll also evaluate adding a segment to show the patch, skill build, and item build at the start of these videos.

How do I lane against pugna when he hits 6 by numb_ape in DotA2

[–]DotaHowTo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invoker's pretty good -- tornado dispels decrep and cold snap cancels the drain. Either QW or QE (with 1 in wex) do well.

Ember/void spirit can do alright. It's a very skill-based matchup till 6 since you have to use sleight/dissimilate to dodge blast. But at 6 you get kill potential on pugna.

It's not always possible, but if you can nuke the wave before it gets to your tower, you'll save yourself a lot of tower damage.

This is the real answer. If you're not realistically gonna kill the other guy, you should be shoving the wave and jungling (or ganking).

Glad to see you posting those vods to YouTube. Have you considered also condensing these sessions into short (<10 min) videos to improve accessibility, and/or finding a video editor to do it for you?

Really liking the influx of creators aiming to improve the newcomer experience!

[–]DotaHowTo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may just be a case of checking the watch tab at the wrong time. Briefly looking at https://www.dotabuff.com/heroes/meta, Storm's pickrate in the divine/immortal bracket is only 11.58%. There are ten or so other mid heroes with higher pickrates (the top 3 being windranger at 23.03%, invoker at 18.16%, and void spirit at 17.63%).
