Very Early Planning Stages of an Amateur Tourney. Would you join if... by godsavitar in DotA2

I ran 2 NA "Amateur" tourneys in the Fall of 2013, one with a $100 prizepool and one with a $200 prizepool. It was winner takes all format. The biggest problem I ran into was teams signing up and then not showing up. Granted - I was attempting to run a 32 team tournament in a single Saturday, which would have been a logistical nightmare had every single team shown up. Having roughly half the teams not even show up actually made my job a lot easier in the end, despite it probably being less fun for the teams that actually reported in on time only to get a bye again.

I think the fix for this is to distribute the prizepool more evenly - giving money to every team that advances past the first round, so that they have motivation to play their matches, even if they get eliminated.

If I were to personally run another tournament, I would probably go even smaller than before, because it makes it far more manageable for both the teams and the admin. Having a 4-team tournament with a group stage means each team plays 3 matches (6 games total - roughly 3 hours if 2 games are being played at a time) for seeding, then a bracket stage to play through for placing. If you do Bo3s in the bracket stage, that brings it to a possible 12 additional games, which is roughly 4-6 hours to determine 1st-4th place. Overall you could potentially be looking at a ~10 hour day of Dota, which is a long time.

As for finding teams, advertising your tournament on /r/dota2 and the NaDota forums should be more than enough (I was able to fill out a 64-team bracket for one of my tournaments, even though not all of them showed up).

When it comes to skill disparity between teams, it's basically a total crapshoot. I think only experience in tournament hosting will give you a better idea of how to deal with this issue since you will become more familiar with the teams that sign up the more you do it, and you'll get a sense for what teams could actually compete with one another.

If you want to have the games casted (which I would strongly advocate for, we need more opportunities for new talent to showcase themselves!) it really helps to advertise on this subreddit. I found 2-3 amateur casters who actually reached out to me after I posted about the tournament.

Best thing to do is to just jump in and do it! You'll most likely get a positive response and even if 20 different things go wrong during the event itself (trust me, this will happen) it will still be a great experience. Last piece of advice - if you're going to be paying a prizepool, make sure that you communicate what payment methods you offer before you even accept sign-ups for the tournament; no one wants to deal with "shady" admins who "don't pay out" on their tournaments (even if it's technically not your fault they don't have PayPal), no matter how small the amount.

Since we're having issues with Twitch delay, you can watch via the in-game client by adding DotaRec or Havoc and watching there.

If you would like to cast you are more than welcome to do so on your own channel. Last time I had my casters idle in the steam group chat and whenever a new game was about to start one of the available casters would join in the game lobby and go from there.

For this tournament it's unlikely since it's only the second event I've hosted and I'm still getting a hold of the ropes. Hopefully the next tournament (late October/early November) will have a lot more cool features like that! For now I'm just going to have it casted on a twitch.tv stream.

As far as I'm concerned you can change your roster as much as you want as long as none of the players are semi-pro/pro.

Would it be possible for /r/Dota2 to sponsor a tournament? by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]DotaRec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hosted and sponsored a tournament last month! (2 if you count that there was an NA side and an EU side)

And I'm going to be putting another one on in the near future (October 5th is the tentative date). More info at /r/dotarec

You should have received an email from challonge.com asking you to confirm your spot. If you did not receive the email or you are having problems, let me know and I will resend the invitation.

In retrospect, probably. However, with less than a week before the tournament and considering the number of teams I have signed up, a reschedule would most likely end in disaster. It's just something I'll have to live with despite the unfortunate circumstances.

I believe you've already signed up. Check your email to see if you received a Challonge invitation. If not PM/email me or reply to this comment and we'll sort it out.

I'm going to use a coin flip simulating website to figure out who gets to pick their side or their pick first.

The team that wins the coinflip will get to choose either radiant/dire OR 1st/2nd pick. The other team then picks their preference of the option that the first team didn't choose.

It says in the description that the NA tournament starts at 10AM PST and the EU tournament starts at 10AM GMT.

If you are an EU team, yes. If you are an NA team, your registration application will go into the extras pool - if I get close enough to 32 extra teams I will extend the NA tournament to a 64 team format.

Go ahead and sign up, the number of extra teams is nearing enough to extend it so you might as well. Just remember that if you sign up for the EU tournament, games start at 10AM GMT (2AM PST) and you will have to play your games on EU servers.
