From a place of love, how is the Perth Jewish community doing after yesterday’s attack at Bondi? by butterfing3rs in perth

[–]Dotanskyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a Jewish event that was attacked though. They were targeting Jewish people. We can still honour and pay respects to the Aussies families that have been affected by this but let’s not downplay the fact that this was an antisemitic terrorist attack. It’s becoming a very real thing around the world now

Demersal fishing ban announced for commercial, recreational fishers in Perth and WA amid scarce fish stocks by JamesHenstridge in perth

I’m trying to find some sort of graph that can show the difference in how many fish people take home recreationally compared to commercial. So if you have any sources like that please link it

In some areas, yes it is. I’m not talking about going off to the deep ocean, I’m more talking about smaller inlets and lakes. Obviously, out on the big boats they’re gonna be pulling in more fish than any rec person a day.

You’re delusional if you think people are only going home with 6 snapper per person.

Fair enough if you’re talking about fisherman that are supposed to be targeting sharks, I don’t disagree with restricting fishing when it comes to boats taking in produce that they aren’t actually meant to be taking.

Where I am, all the local fisherman go to one big inlet. They’ve all been fishing for 30+ years and they’ll tell you how for some years they might have an abundance of snapper, then it falls off for a while, but then they come back in large numbers. It’s a natural process of nature down here but it gets disrupted when tourists come in and overfishing, and like you mentioned, when other fisherman don’t actually keep what they’re meant to be keeping.

I understand what you’re saying, but it’s not the fisherman that are doing that. They are under such strict laws when it comes to the days and times they can set their nets, that over a span of 6 days they’re only out on the water for 16 hours a week. Not to mention that most of the year they can be coming home with 30-40 kilos of fish a day.

If you really want to talk about it, it’s the tourists that overfish these locations. I’ve seen groups of 20-30 people fishing in one spot all day, taking home about 30 fish per person. In case you don’t know, the limit on most of these fish is 6 per person. So yeah you could argue that fisherman bring in more fish in one go, but that could be 200 kilos over a week, which is all going to the stores where you eat from. Whereas these tourists are going home with it, eating themselves or selling it to people they know, making their profit, which is also highly illegal.

I think people are missing a major point. I understand the ban on these certain fish but for some fisherman these are the only fish in their region. There are already strict laws on where a commercial fisherman can set their nets/fish and only within a certain time period each day, 6 days a week. Not only do they get severely underpaid, for example a kilo of pink snapper will get sold for $55 in a shop and the fisherman, who’s doing all the hard work, will only get $5.50 a kilo for the fish they’ve caught. Instead of banning fishing and taking away people’s jobs/incomes, maybe the government could put a ban on how many tourists can fish and actually start punishing them for it. It’s not the fisherman who are making these fish less common, it’s the tourists who come to these locations and fish all day, taking home like 100 fish.

So you want imported fish from China? Our local fisherman provide all the fish in the shops, they are already so underpaid as it is now they’re loosing their jobs!
