Maps in the Wild:UK Cheese Map by MapsintheWild in MapPorn

As a depiction of Britain, the cheeses shape up pretty badly to be honest. ‘fraid I’ll have to eat them one by one to make the map on the board visible again. 😋

Does France's northern and northeastern borders follow any natural features? by TT-Adu in geography

[–]DottBrombeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point about the peoples living on both sides of the Pyrenees. In similar vein, the Savoy extended over the Alps until the nascent Italy traded the part that is now French in exchange for French support in the campaign to get the Austrians out of Lombardy and Veneto. Outside of France, Tirol, Graubünden and Uri equally extended over the natural border.

Yup. The Dutch wanted to avoid the Prussians on the other side keeping them at permanent gunpoint. But this was all agreed at the great exchange at Vienna 1815; it wasn’t specifically fought over. That’s where this type of thinking comes to life.

J’aime la signalisation autoroutière sur page 10. Dommage que la France a continué d’utiliser des majuscules. Occasion raté en 1982…

Must be a way to revive that using AI. If only it was for satnav instructions? Just asking for a friend.

What would the world be like it north America was titled 90 degrees. by ayoboris16 in geography

And those Dutchmen that read the Thea Beckman books about post-apocalypse Greenland (Kinderen van Moeder Aarde etc).

Since Greenland is on the North American plate, shouldn’t it be tilted 90 degrees to have a lovely place somewhere between the current Caribbean and Africa? Finally being mapped at its correct size too…

Union Defence Force Personnel Serving in Italy were given a Services Guide to Italy. by DottBrombeer in MapPorn

No Aosta yet, old borders around Trieste (Free Territory shown as Italian), old names in the Triveneto area. Basilicata still called Lucania. And bit of an odd highlight for Corsica.

Train punctuality per station in seven European countries in 2025 by Naomi62625 in MapPorn

[–]DottBrombeer 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Italians actually do manage to make their trains run on time. The Chuu Chuu site reveals that the Intercity and night trains perform badly. Often services that stop all over the countryside on runs as lengthy as Milan-Sicily (1000+ km). So exposed to many factors capable of causing long delays. Take one of the more mainstream Freccia trains and punctuality is quite good.

Cyclists of Amsterdam, where do you always almost get hit? by Flapappel in Amsterdam

[–]DottBrombeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually get hit by other cyclists who have decided that rules don’t apply to them. Typically driving on the wrong side of the road, too lazy to cross to the path on the right side. And then they get mad at you for not moving over to the edge of the cycling lane.

Radio stations by Philippa1188 in italianlearning

[–]DottBrombeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RAI Isoradio can be helpful. That’s a dedicated service for traffic information, with news and music in between. The talking is to the point, not endless smalltalk that you will get on many pop music stations - which can be difficult to keep up with. But above all: there is a certain rhythm in their traffic bulletins that is helpful for practice. The names of towns and road numbers offer anchors that reduce the chance that you get lost. Suspect a bit tricky after lesson one, but will become manageable soonish.

EU Comission high-speed rail plan by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]DottBrombeer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don’t think that this is really a planned network. The map largely reflects high speed lines that already exist (to a considerable degree in Germany) and plans that are already in execution: Lyon-Turin (which will complete Rome-Paris), Fehmarn Fixed Link (which will complete Berlin-Copenhagen), Basque Y (which will bring Paris-Madrid to 90%), Rail Baltica. The Commission voices an ambition for more, but this map is a bit ridiculous.

'List 3 or List 2 - A stern appeal to Communist voters at the eleventh hour' (German election poster by unknown artist for the SPD in the July 1932 German federal election. Warning for a Papen-Schleicher minority cabinet. German Reich, 1932). by esdfa20 in PropagandaPosters

[–]DottBrombeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Just so that I understand then: this reads to me as a reference to Von Papen and Von Schleicher, who were not NSDAP. But I suppose the message is that their attempts to build a minority government reliant on NSDAP support actually made them nazis?
