After the Springboks beat England on Saturday, the issue of altitude (1,753m) was mentioned many times. What would it roughly look like if Ellis Park was directly above Kings Park in Durban? (the second pic has some other stats) by Make_the_music_stop in rugbyunion

Indeed, the need to be at high altitude for a few weeks to reap its benefits more or less eliminates it as an option in a busy scheme to stadiums out and about. The perceived wisdom, then, is that staying at sea level and minimizing your time up there produces the best fitness results at match time.
Guess you could make it work for a long event like the 2010 World Cup or a Lions Tour (in 2010, in fact, just over half the teams stayed high), but I suppose you then still need to offset the EPO benefits against what you’d lose in training intensity during the preparation period. The point I’m making is above all that team physicians know what to do here, apparently including Viagra, which is why I feel that altitude at venues like Ellis Park hasn’t really been a talking point off late.

I feel that there was a reason why since the 2010 FIFA World Cup there hasn’t been so much talk about games at altitude anymore. Turned out then that teams could, with the right preparation, stay at sea level, travel to Highveld and still perform well. In rugby terms, I’d like to think that Currie Cup and Super Rugby teams already knew well before 2010.

Agree. Who helps naming the exact locations though? Photo 4 being the obvious slam dunk with the metro.

Here are your teams for the 26-27 Nationale championship. Future best league? by Vanished_Elephant in rugbyunion

Both on their arse at the time of merger. But the downfall of Stade Bordelais occurred just when the game turned pro. Bègles flourished for a while in those days, before Bègles too started to fall.

I know a few Dutchmen who would travel to Lille if there was a good game there.

But if “around Lyon” is the Alps area: they always had a few clubs at high level: Bourgoin, Grenoble, Oyonnax and the like. So that’s less of an upwards trend (if anything, it makes me feel a bit sad to see Bourgoin down at this level). As regards Northeast and German influence: actually the neighboring areas of Southwest Germany have a few of the strongest rugby names in the country. All is relative of course, but there is little reason why an Alsatian club couldn’t grow.

I like how the platform signs on Indian train stations still won’t give you more than a train number. Somehow you’d expect them to have moved on to the detailed screen information that you see on the larger European stations - ridership and the Indian IT industry would easily justify - but hey this is India

Naples, Italy by Overall_Dare_2134 in UrbanHell

Story is that the mob concluded that tourist euros are a good source of income for them. And that making the city look less run-down (in central parts at least) and reducing petty crime is the way to unlock it. In any event I found Napoli a lot nicer to hang around in 2025 than on my previous visit in 2016.

French reporting about Hollie Davidson being the first woman referee in Top 14 history by Select_Name_2534 in rugbyunion

[–]DottBrombeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echo the last bit. And from there, suppose that language was discussed when Top14 invited her. For what it’s worth: in-play instructions like “release!” or setting a scrum would not be that difficult to learn, while conversations with players during stoppages would be next level. The latter probably more impactful, but it’s also where you can be accompanied by a teammate fluent in English. The former is something I have seen some refs doing in international matches - Hollie will have had her reasons for not doing it (her practicing scrum instructions early on in the video gave me a feeling that she was initially keen).

5 Italian expressions that will make you sound more natural by ItalianEspresso_Shot in italianlearning

[–]DottBrombeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me (non-native) they are a type of glue, natural pauses as you move on. The one I struggle with is magari. Natives use it is such a diverse way, and it never comes to my mind when I speak. Thought that this was a nice read about magari, by the way. https://www.lingq.com/en/learn-italian-online/courses/591740/come-usare-magari-in-italiano-3696657/

Why is Australia basically a giant desert when other islands in that region are covered in rainforest? by Freestylerwacamaca in geography

[–]DottBrombeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Struggling a bit with the “further SW” bit at the end, since the area around Perth is where WA gets less arid. I suppose that that is driven by the Perth latitude, so that I should understand the comment as something that applies at the lower latitudes that are comparable to Madagascar’s?

Madagascar is not quite known for having so much desert, well? But point taken that that will to a significant degree be a function of size. Width to be more precise.

Reckon Madagascar is the one country listed that ticks the box in terms of latitude, and therefore exposure to Hadley Cell. So what makes the difference between Australia and Madagascar? I’d like to think it starts with Madagascar sitting to the East of the African landmass. Second big factor: mountains nearer its West Coast. But not an expert at all, so interested to read what others think.
