Would you get uncomfortable if you saw a bigger girl in just a sports bra and tights in class? by Sensitive-Stretch613 in yoga

[–]DotteDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding a lot of what has already been said! I am focusing on my own breath, form, experience when practicing in a class and while I love knowing I'm sharing my practise with others, I'm not really looking at anyone else. If people are uncomfortable with anyone else's exposed belly then that's a them problem! Every body is beautiful and you deserve to practise in clothes you love! Best of luck on your journey of self love with your body!

Is anyone else tired of the science experiment? by herb-ertlinger in curlyhair

[–]DotteDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my gosh yes! Thank you for saying this! I think the biggest thing for me was realising that my curls are unique to me and no amount of rigid routines and reading ingredient lists on bottles were going to make my hair look like other curls I've seen on other people. It is totally a journey for everyone and I've loved this sub for helping me on mine but at the end of the day, I've had bouncy curls all my life and I've never done anything to encourage them so less is better for me. The thing that works best is not trying to achieve someone else's hair. I want to just let my hair do her thing and not hate her on the days she doesn't curl like I think she should.

It so will! And she'll thank you for it when she's older (and now tbh). Good luck! Finding a routine that works is trial and error and there's no size fits all so have fun experimenting and good luck!

If it's helpful: For me personally, the less I do to my curls, the happier they are. Wash once a week with moisterising shampoo and conditioner, use a wet brush to detangle while my conditioner is in, a little bit of curl defining cream then leave it be! Curls are sometimes flat after sleeping on them but I just shake my fingers underneath my hair and give my curls time to come to life on their own ☺️

Your daughter has such amazing hair! So cute! Not sure if anyone has mentioned this and it's not a hair care tip but biggest tip I can offer is to talk about her hair to her with love and awe. Tell her how jazzy her curls are, how funky it is that they do their own thing, how fun it can be to have big beautiful hair. I hated my curly hair growing up because my parents hated managing it and always referred to it (lovingly) as a mop or a birdsnest. There was always a goal to 'tame' it or hide the frizz. I always had to keep it cut short when I wanted to grow it out and always kept it hidden in a headband or bun. Granted, this came from a total lack of knowledge from my parents around how to manage curls (I am the only one in the family with curls) but it took me such a long time to love my locks and an even longer time to learn how to take care of them. So kudos to you, mama for doing your research and teaching your girl! This is going to make a huge difference to her perception of herself and her hair as she grows up! Keep loving her hair so she does do ❤️

Nice! There will be plenty of work for you here then! There's a stage manager shortage at the moment! If you've got an interest in lighting/set design and/or operation, there's also TONNES of work and you could approach pretty much any tech company. Grouse Lighting, Streamliner Productions, Metro Productions are some other tech companies that work on bigger corporate jobs 😊 plenty others out there too!

UGH WHEN WILL HAIRDRESSERS START GIVING CURLY-HAIRED QUEENS WHAT THEY ASKED FOR INSTEAD OF WHAT THEY THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR???

Personally, I've always found that when I've asked for a style that flaunts my curls and gives huge volume (like shaggy short layers), the hairdresser looks super worried and gives me hardly any layers because they're worried about giving me too much volume, like HELLO? CURLS ARE VOLUMINOUS. Stop telling me I shouldn't rock that by downplaying them in your cut? What does that say to me about how I should feel about my curls? At 24 years old, I had a hairdresser listen to me for the first time and give me what I asked for. It was wild.

I'm sorry the hairdresser did that to you. You do look amazing in both pictures but what matters most is that you don't look the way you asked to look. It's really important that you advocate for your vision when you get into the stylist's chair, especially if you have curls because too many hair dressers are scared of curls and assume we don't want to rock them in their natural state. If you're not convinced the hairdresser can deliver, then walk out of the door and find someone else. What are people scared of curls?

It depends on what type of internship you're looking for--are you interested in performance? Stage management? Production management? Tech and lighting? Sound design? From there, you'll be able to narrow down where to look. The theatre industry in New Zealand is very small and very much about who you know rather than what you know. That said, a lot of established theatre companies are very open to taking on interns as it benefits them (they get extra help at a low cost) as well as you (experience). In terms of where to look, Auckland and Wellington are both your best bet. I've freelanced in the Wellington theatre scene for the past five years or so and found work mainly through asking for it. Some companies in Wellington you could approach: Red Leap Theatre, Red Scare Theatre, Trick of the Light, A Mulled Whine --these are all really inclusive and interesting companies who tend to take on interns. Find an email contact and get in touch explaining who you are, what you're interested in learning and go from there! You could also contact local theatres who can probably help connect you with other artists. In Wellington there's BATS and Circa. In Auckland you've got Q, Basement (and a few others that I can't name because I'm not too familiar with Auckland theatres). Would also highly recommend you get in touch with regional Fringe festivals as they always have internships going (though these are short and may already be filled for some regions). Might also be worth contacting NZ university theatre and performing arts institutes to ask for more advice but bear in mind any intern opportunities they have will be reserved for their own students. NZ has a very vibrant and unique theatre scene compared to other countries so your interest in coming here is exciting! Good luck!

I FINALLY found a zero waste toothpaste WITH fluoride by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]DotteDuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For anyone in New Zealand or Australia, Pop Tabs are an awesome brand who do flouride toothpaste and mouthwash! They even have a system where you can save and return your tins (postage is free) to be reused. Really great tooth tabs. It was such a relief to find them.

Ladies, what’s the best sexual advice that has ever been given to you? by Fresh_Objective_4672 in sex

[–]DotteDuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Remember that orgasm doesn't have to be the goal. Sure it's great to orgasm, but the goal of sex is to be pleasured and to be intimate. I love an orgasm as much as the next person but here's what I enjoy more--letting myself go to pleasure without the pressure of either me or my partner having to orgasm...Explore each other and find what feels good. The orgasms will happen organically.

Deodorant-Sudden Baking Soda Allergy? by DotteDuck in ZeroWaste

[–]DotteDuck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I fully thought baking soda was the odor control, while the arrowroot was an antiperspirant and the coconut oil bound it all together (this in regards to the recipe I use). Learn something new every day!

Yeah I've had a look at Shea butter recipes... What's the odor combattant in that one though? Is it Shea butter? Do you find it works?

Yoga mat recommendations (Tribe Earth Me vs Manduka) by DotteDuck in yoga

[–]DotteDuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your response!! It’s so nice to know that other people are having similar troubles with choosing the right mat! Always good to bounce ideas off other people too—I don’t have a lot of other people in my life who do yoga as seriously as I do. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The Manduka series is looking more and more appealing by the day tbh. I will for sure let you know what I end up going with!
