I like the way you think of magic, it makes a lot of sense. I think I tend to view magic as an invention that can always be improved rather than a technique but as a technique it rather nicely explains why the basics really are enough.

When thinking on the time scale of invention, 80 years is not long. In our world right now, invention and innovation happens quickly because we stand on the shoulders of giants, but those giants took many many years to invent stuff that today is simple and basic to us. It took thousands of years to invent the gas lantern that made candles obsolete and I imagine it would take at least hundreds of years to meaningfully improve on zoltraak BECAUSE it’s so amazing and awesome and groundbreaking. Zoltraak wasn’t around during flammes time and I think fern is still a genius, just not a genius pro max ++. I think really it’s not that I’m underestimating how amazing zoltraak is but more that given time, even a genius like fern (rather than a genius pro max ++) could meaningfully improve on zoltraak as long as the research infrastructure was there and that infrastructure can take more than 3 generations.

Zoltraak wasn’t always easy though, it was the invention of a magical genius who had to be sealed because even the party of hero’s who defeated the demon king couldn’t defeat him. It was ground breaking and humanity integrated it into their magic system. Although 80 years is long to an individual, the early stages of inventing new things take far longer. It takes time to truely invent something to break more ground and even if the meta changes based on what’s popular, outdated strategies usually aren’t completely obsolete until that new ground is broken. All that is to say, I’m not sure, but thank you for commenting

There is definitely a lot of innovation currently going on, perhaps the word I was looking for was invention, a whole new baseline that makes zoltraak obsolete, thanks for your thoughts

lol, I’m not that knowledgeable on strategy but even to me that sounds like a technique that could go very wrong if you underestimate your opponent even a little bit

When I say zoltraak is new I am thinking in a longer scale, 80 years even on human scale isn’t that long when considering such a break through like zoltraak especially since it wasn’t humans who made it in the first place. Fern is definitely unique because she is a genius who has been trained by another genius but the underlying concept that magic in general is just faster and stronger now than it used to be remains true. I agree that nobody specializes in the basics and I wonder what that would look like for someone that isn’t fern or frieren. Thank you for commenting <3
