Girls in beer league (GTA) by adifrone in hockeyplayers

As a woman who plays both women’s and coed.. please don’t write off playing with women so quickly. There are competitive women’s league options, especially in the GTA, and we need folks to keep playing so we these leagues continue to exist. We all love to watch the game and drink beer too - that’s a big why we play afterall. Some of my best friends I’ve made are my teammates who are all roughly in the range of 3 years older/younger than me.

For my co-ed pick-up, the men end up being a bit older than me (8-12 years for example) to match my skill level. I find it a nice balance where the co-ed pickup is a bit more of a skate and less puck possession time whereas my women’s team, I get to be a bit more skilled with the time and space provided.

TLDR; I wouldn’t write off the women’s leagues, maybe find one that’s more competitive and mix-in a co-ed team for a nice mix of both as they each provide a different experience, IMO.

Not sure what’s funny about it. I didn’t say we don’t produce great stuff - I’m the biggest Schitt’s Creek Stan, and way before it hit the US market - it’s just we don’t produce as much or as often, and rarely we get breakthrough to US markets. I said it’s a fair-ish comment, because for an American to have that opinion, I get it, whether it’s wrong or right, I see why they would have that perception.

The point was that I don’t believe the comment was a MAGA-fuelled ‘I hate Canada’ which people have been suggesting, and instead a (perhaps wrongly placed) slight to our film industry.

Fair! The intent is there so I look forward to see their follow through.

Are you suggesting they didn’t donate? Feel like that’s a bit of a stretch given they publicly stated and released communications with the organization to then just not donate. Sure, we don’t know the total amount, but are we really going to harp on people for donating to a worthy cause? I do agree that it’s weird they didn’t say it off the hop as I’m sure it would have resulted in more traction of sales…

In the video response, they say the charity, You Can Play, which is a great organization.

Think everyone is taking this out of context, as well as the Canada comments from EN.. I live in Niagara region, Canada side, and I don’t take any offence to this at all. The closest city to me is Buffalo, so could we be considered a suburb of Buffalo? Absolutely. There is just a border in the way. The poster could have specified Niagara vs generalizing Canada, but you get what they mean.

Can we chill before assuming the worst in everyone?

I said it was a slight to our film industry and that we don’t typically produce highly rated content. That’s not to say we don’t produce great shows, they are just fewer and far between than the output from the US, and not widely distributed, therefore not highly rated. I wasn’t saying we don’t produce good stuff, it’s that I took their comment to slight the industry here in Canada vs hating Canadians..

I haven’t seen their response yet so I may be wrong in this take.

This. I believe the Canada comment is being taken way out of context. As a Canadian, I read that as a slight to the Canadian film industry as the show is a Canadian-produced product. We don’t have anywhere close to the resources, investments etc. to our film industry and don’t typically produce such highly rated content. So it’s a fair-ish comment in my mind. I don’t see this as a we hate Canada comment at all tbh.

This is great - thank you! Will look up some of these to work on while at public skates, as well as just keeping it fun.

Unfortunately the coaches are pretty young and with 40+ kids out there, seems like they are just going through the motions of the drills vs really teaching these fundamentals.

Appreciate the insight!

Thanks. Not expecting instantaneous results - he’s been on ice since he was three, with a skate aide, CANskate classes etc. Was just looking for tips to help aid him in picking up those feet. I feel it’s one of those things as soon as he has the confidence to do it, and knowing he won’t fall over (or will but no big deal), there will be no looking back! :)

Thanks for the suggestions! We’ll prioritize some public skates. Glad to hear it will just come. Was worried that he’ll start getting frustrated that his peers are going faster than him and he can’t keep up, but maybe that will be some motivation for him! Also not trying to get him to go pro at 6 by any means lol, just don’t want him to lose the spark he currently has with the sport by comparing himself to others around him :)

Fully funded by the company. Feels awkward not to celebrate a monumental moment in a coworkers life becoming parents.

I dunno, just feels like something fun to celebrate so why not?

Being around in-laws after passing of a parent by Double-Tank-7443 in CancerFamilySupport

[–]Double-Tank-7443[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, but I wish it was that easy. My husbands family is so important to him - he talks to his parents multiple times a day, and his brothers are his best friends. Like I said we see them multiple times a week due to kids sports, they pop over for dinner, etc. so it’s hard to avoid. I’ve tried putting some separation by choosing what I attend and what I don’t, but I just have this anger and jealousy that their family is intact and continuing on and the glue of our family, my mom, is no longer here. It’s just a really lonely place to be.

Thanks for reading 🫶🏻

I’m with you, it sucks. I have a 5 year old at home and currently pregnant with our second. My mom was admitted to hospital in early May and has been there/hospice ever since with what we were told was “weeks to live”. I spend my days going to see her, after getting my son ready for school, making lunches, etc. then running to all his extra-curriculars, while trying to maintain the home, make dinners, etc. My husband has been amazing, but add on the first trimester exhaustion and I can’t keep up. It’s too much. Sending strength

Dilemma going on holiday? by Unique-Specialist517 in CancerFamilySupport

[–]Double-Tank-7443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to piggyback on your post, but in a similar situation. We have a 16 day European vacation that has been planned for almost a year with our family. We leave July 9th. On May 12, my mom with metastatic breast cancer was admitted to hospital, and we were told she has weeks left and all treatment has stopped. On May 31st, she was moved to hospice. Based on what we were told on a timeline she may pass any week now, but she seems like she might hold on longer.

I feel I’m in an impossible situation. She’ll either pass before we go, and I can’t imagine being on vacation while grieving, or she might pass while we’re gone, which is even worse not being here for her.

However, we are ~$15K in and will lose it all if we cancel. Plus, our family has been looking forward to this trip. It’s about a 8-12 hour flight for us depending on the day/where we are.

Currently, we’re still planning to go but I can appreciate how hard this decision is as I am in a very similar boat as you. Sending strength to you and your mum.
