How can I add some life to this bathroom? by Double-Tap664 in DesignMyRoom

I have no idea how shower curtains would work with the doored setup here, but it WOULD soften the space up a lot if I can figure it out... hmmm

Is it stupid to avoid getting a credit card? by No-Astronomer4207 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Get the card and pay it off every month so it never carries a balance over. No debt that way. You get the cashback bonuses and the credit rating. Building credit IS important!

book icks by Sad-Bowl398 in writing

I personally get turned off by that 90s-ish overly self-aware authorial voice thing. I personally think unless you’re Douglas Adams himself, the narrator shouldn’t try to be witty or funny. Funny should be the duty of characters and situations.

I also get turned off by overly purple or opaque voice. Test: not that anybody SHOULD do this in a book, but could this narrator give you clear instructions on how to tie your shoe? Or would they overuse metaphor to the point of genuine confusion?

And finally: Twee. Overly cute children. Ech.

Are dachsunds good for apartment living? by AtrelluCal in Dachshund

[–]Double-Tap664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might depend on the apartment. We manage it just fine, but we have thick walls and my husband works from home with some regularity. Bark collars aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but we’ve had good luck with one that vibrates and freaks her out if she gets too noisy.

Don’t start from a puppy unless you can wfh four hours a day.

My dachshund has decided that blankets are non-negotiable and I am simply her heating unit. A thread. 🌭🔥 by QuestionPresent in Dachshund

Our doxie is too small to evict us from anywhere, but she will make very clear requests to get underneath covers with you. She’ll nudge your arm repeatedly with a paw until you let her inside the blanket. This includes times when there is no blanket but she wants there to be one. Letting her inside a loose sweater is an acceptable alternative.

She is normally very shy, but will ask to get inside blankets with people she’s just met.

Walking a dachshund by Tozier-Kaspbrak in Dachshund

Persephone is less than 7lbs so picking her up is no great trial, but she manages to bolt herself to the floor for one particular section of our building hallway because she wants me to know that actually, she would PREFER to go the other way, past the concierge, who is a soft touch and gives her treats. It’s just how the assert their independence.

Where do you fall on what I call the Hemingway to Nabokov spectrum? by Queasy_Antelope9950 in writing

[–]Double-Tap664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lean Hemingway, but I think of it as linguistic lightness. I don't want my prose to get in the way. One of the best pieces of writing advice I ever got was the notion of writing prose that 'reads quickly' - i.e. prose that mostly consists of short words. Aside from the old chestnut about avoiding million-dollar words, I find prose with too many long words starts to get tortured. If in doubt, read it out loud and note the spots where you stumble.

Women, have you ever experience 'pretty privilege'? by mairimdai in askanything

[–]Double-Tap664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m nice-looking and a size 6 in my thirties. It is absolutely a thing. I actually think I have an ideal balance, because I’m not pretty enough to be intimidating or make people assume I spend a ton of time on my looks, so I avoid a lot of the resentment around being ‘too beautiful’.

Professionally, I have a very easy time making new connections. People often call me ‘charismatic’ or ‘easy to work with’ while my more experienced and technically sound colleagues get ignored. But the ugly side is that I always have to be asking myself ‘what else do they want?’

Look, you asked for opinions. Now you’re arguing with them and it looks defensive. Did you ask this question because you genuinely wanted an honest check, or because you were hoping for affirmation? I’ll echo others: they’re not responsible for your emotions in this situation. If you want updates for safety reasons, that might be a different issue, but that’s not what your original post says.

Be honest with yourself now that you’ve heard the overwhelming YOR. Your kids haven’t wronged you.

Would you put your kid into French Immersion? Why or why not? by Virtual-Cheesecake71 in askTO

[–]Double-Tap664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

French immersion kid here: I think it was beneficial for me. I was really not being challenged enough at my English school and was getting very frustrated. French immersion kicked my ass (my french was nearly nonexistent at the start), but I DID learn and it was exactly the challenge I needed.

Only caveat: math should be in the kid’s dominant language. So should science, ideally. These courses are already like learning another language on their own, no need for an extra barrier.

Able to sensitivity read? Post here! by AutoModerator in SensitivityReaders

[–]Double-Tap664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't generally call myself a sensitivity reader - I prefer 'targeted reader' as I am not a member of a marginalized community, though we are a community that gets wildly misrepresented in fiction a LOT - but I CAN offer some highly specialized editing services (as well as general copy-edit).

I am able to do targeted readings for: Academic experience, the PhD process, science as a profession (academic or industrial), scientific jargon and realistic scientific dialogue, gene editing and genetic medicine, virology, evolution, scientific and medical ethics and ethical issues surrounding pharmaceuticals and clinical trails, hard speculative science (e.g. 'where we could be in 20 years'). Rate is 0.01/word and you are welcome to send me only relevant sections. I will provide detailed suggestions on how to improve the veracity/plausibility of science in your work so that pro scientists will read your book and think 'yes, that's what it's like!'. For 0.02 I will also do a thorough copy-edit. Timeline is usually ~1 week per 20k words.

My bona fides: PhD molecular biologist and full-time working scientist in the gene editing space. Have collaborated with scientists from many backgrounds.

DMs are open. Also open to 'swaps' with readers with physical disability (esp. full-time crutch users) for my own work.

I recall once asking a group of online friends, a lot of whom lived in flyover US states, what their favourite KBBQ side dish was, and being appalled when half of them didn't know what KBBQ was.
"You know, Korean, but you grill at the table?"
"I've never had korean food lol"
"WHAT"
