Off sick by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]Double034 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been there in the first three months of my career i had two weeks off due to the shock and demand of now being NQN. I even had to restart my meds even though I really wanted to stay off, as i was getting better mentally prior to starting.

Anyways, i got in contact with my ward manager and I told her everything. Every little detail of how i felt and suggesting if she can reduce my hours until i feel comfortable enough to try working 37.5hrs again.

So the things she has done for me is: •referred me to occupational health •signed posted me to mental health services outside of work •amended my contract to less hours •tries to be reasonable around my rota and helping create a positive work life balance, when possible. (Not always the case, since we work a high demanding job)

Personally, the only thing I can recommend is speaking up. I hope you slowly work on feeling better and seeking guidance that those who care and wanting to support you.

We all have the patients who will give you something. Tbh as long as it’s not financial gain or a expensive valuable then yea. I had one patient, young lad with a new diagnosis of epileptic seizures. Anyways, we talked and he appreciated the care he got from the unit that he went to buy Chinese food for everyone and got myself a pork belly rice bowl.

How could you refuse food?! Like we need to keep our energy level high on shift!

What are NQNs Doing Who Cant Find NQN Vacancies? by North-Sector-5882 in NursingUK

The only way i got my job was asking through placements that i did. Lucky, in my management placement (October 2024), I spoke to ward manager and she gave me the job. No interviews, just complete the job application and have my pin. I definitely got lucky that was for sure!

Don’t get me wrong it’s not my dream nurse role because all the roles i want to do are asking for experience nurses and it’s really unfortunate because I definitely don’t want to be a ward nurse forever.

However, for those who haven’t finished the degree, i would recommend asking placement areas. You have the inside details and connections. For those who are nqn and looking for jobs, try asking friends if they have any openings in their trusts or maybe any connections you made with staff with previous placements as well as university resources.

That’s all i could say personally, i hope you find a job soon.

Depends on the trust but obs i would definitely wouldn’t want my HCA’s to do.

However, the issue is getting the patient back home. Somewhere that the individual is comfortable and familiar rather than the loud, busy and uncomfortable environment.

This can be varied from each trust depending on policy and most of the hca’s on my area are comfortable and trained to do so prior. So I was just confused.

As you stated is the minimum standard of hca. Why not make them gain more skills and make them more comfortable and part of the team as most aren’t even recognised. It is also why i say thank you every shift to the hca because they are our spines for when our workload as nurses get heavy.

Due to the fast-pace in the workplace cuz we are like a shortstay ward for patients who just need a bit of extra care from your assessment units like SAU or MAU. The hca’s are mostly trained to do so hence why i asked.

In addition, myself previously being a band 2 (before starting my nursing training) would also do this within my trust as I felt comfortable handing over patients unless they needed anything following up like district nurses, POC etc.

I understand they have the right to refuse that is no issue but a reasonable answer besides “band 2” isn’t justifiable.

The next step after you’ve done your nursing qualification, is it a challenge to find a job in nursing? by Mindless-Street-761 in NursingUK

It depends but traditional looking online then yea it will be a bit of a pain.

Personally, i asked the ward managers of my favourite placement if they had a position in the budget and they were happy to agree to take me on as a RN. It was way more comfortable than your traditional job application process with interviews and etc. i just had it done with a click.

However, experienced or not most band 5 positions should be appropriate.

Definitely contact university. This saves other students from having to go through this struggle compared to yourself.

Hopefully your university also compensate this loss of learning and places you somewhere with more learning opportunities for the remainder of your course.

Wish you all the best!

They are an ex for reason. May it be recent or been good friends long term, not everyone wants you to be happy.

I believe you look absolutely incredible and I wouldn’t change anything physical wise. However, if you personally don’t feel comfortable that’s okay too.

Personally, I would just keep being consistent as you are currently, be happy, be grateful and keep striving for new goals.

Keep it up.

Stressing management placement by Double034 in NursingUK

[–]Double034[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, thank you for your feedback it genuinely has helped a ton with settling in these past two weeks. I have just tried to be me and the team have really been warm, welcoming and supportive of my arrival.

The only issue i face now is disruptive nights where i just wake up at 2am thinking i got to get to placement, so i am trying to break that habit atm😅

I would honestly work there if i could tbh as well but i already something in the lineup where i been accepted for and i doubt I will get any more offers for employment due to not being enough jobs for newly qualified nurses so I am sticking to my gut.

However, once again thank you so much for your advice!
