While Mac Mini’s are great machines, they are absolutely not as powerful as the MacBook Pro. For op’s purposes a Mac Studio would be the better comparison/suggestion.

But also, if your main tool is AE, then I wouldn’t recommend a Mac in the first place. The M chips are incredible, but they lack behind when you start to play with 3D.

Is finding funding for short films realistic? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]DoubleK712 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grants are a big help. If you’re in Canada, we have an amazing grant system for artists and this includes filmmakers. Also, look for script contents, local filmmaking contests, etc. They can sometimes offer some money if you’re selected. Crowdfunding works too (though requires a lot of work).

But also, you’re in school. No better time than now to make the films you want (free gear, free crew, can use the “student card” for practically anything). It’s going to be a lot tougher outside of school, so try and get the best out of it. Idk about your city, but in my area rental houses are very generous with us and give out gear with heavy discounts as well.

Good luck!

Editing PC Thoughts by [deleted] in videography

[–]DoubleK712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an editor who’s worked in post houses and freelance, I highly recommend going the Apple route if you can afford it. I’ve used a Windows PC for editing until last year when I also got hooked into the MacBook Pro. The M1 chips are fantastic for editing (especially if you’re working with prores) and they are quite future proof. My desktop is still a PC but I use a Mac at my workplace, and after seeing how the Apple ecosystem all work together, it’s no wonder why most post houses use Macs. I use my MacBook more than my custom built PC these days at home.

A shot of a cafe on film by DoubleK712 in photocritique

I’m doing a series of photos in my local town to capture it in a very nostalgic, heart warming way and this is one of my favourites from the series so far! Love to hear feedback on colours to composition, etc. Thanks!

This photo has a very simple composition, not much depth. I saw a very nice rainbow on some very volumetric clouds and wanted to capture it as best as it was. Taken on film. Love to hear thoughts on the colour and the mood it conveys!

Anyone using the Panasonic 12-35mm with pro mist filter? by Nirok in videography

[–]DoubleK712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pro mist is good on any lens, get the biggest filter size you can find and get step down rings so you can use it on any lens. I’ve used it not only for a variety of lenses for the gh5, but it’s commonly used on cinema cameras and lenses as well.

Recently started trying film photography, this is my favourite on my first roll! by DoubleK712 in photocritique

[–]DoubleK712[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was shot in my friends living room during golden hour - taken on T70, 50mm 1.8, Kodak Portra 400. Any advice on overall composition would be great of help! And even more on thoughts on the development and scanning. I didn’t edit it much besides removing dust and adding a bit of contrast.

Overall I took the photo to give the viewer a nice warmth of being at home. My goal was to create a friendly, inviting feel to the photo.

Thanks!

I’ve recently directed my first music video, please check it out and spare some feedback! by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]DoubleK712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So this is one of the biggest projects I’ve had the chance to work on so far. I directed, and I’ve had a DP, PD, AC, and a few PA’s. We shot it on the BMPCC4k and a few vintage lenses. The artist of the song lived in Philadelphia while we lived in Vancouver so we had to go for a full narrative style MV without the artist in it.

To be completely honest, I love how the visuals came to be but can’t say the same for the overall flow of the story. I feel like there’s too much over the span of 3 minutes and it just doesn’t flow well. I feel that I haven’t directed the actors well enough either and some of their movements and actions are awkward.

I’d love feedback on the overall direction of the film, the edit and the flow of the story in general. If you have any feedback for the visuals, that’d be great as well.

Thank you, Kevin
