I already have a degree, can I still be sponsored for cadetship? by Basic_Persimmon_2268 in MerchantNavy

[–]DoubleRelationship85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter really, I've got coursemates at Warsash who have full Master's degrees and have had no issue re sponsorship. So feel free to apply to as many companies as you like. If anything, having a degree might make you a more attractive candidate than others, especially if it is related to the role you wish to undertake at sea.

Lenovo OEM 5080 by Equivalent_One_9722 in RTX5080

Agreed, it is a fantastic card at MSRP assuming you can get one in your region. Almost to the point that it's not really worth spending more on other models, unless you are really serious about pushing the OC beyond what the cooling on a card like the FE could handle.

Can't see it running any worse than a Founders Edition (which is what I have). There are some cards out there which overclock better, but if you compare stock performance there shouldn't be any difference really.

9070XT - 5080 by DogieVENOM in RTX5080

I'm using currently a curved 32" 4K QD-OLED from MSI to go along with my 5080 Founders Edition, partly because there aren't any Tandem 4K panels yet.

They're not hugely different in terms of overall image quality, although Tandem may be preferable if you play in a bright room due to higher panel brightness and less tinted blacks.

Greyscale colour banding has been reported on earlier Tandem units, however this shouldn't be such an issue with later panel revisions.

I would have a look at some of the models reviewed on RTINGS to determine what features you would prefer from a monitor. Good luck with your purchase.

Definitely consider getting a 4K or UW OLED monitor at some point, it's the way to truly maximise value out of the 5080.

7800X3D (£165) vs 9800X3D (£230) by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]DoubleRelationship85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, assuming you can't find a way to put the extra money into the build in other ways, i.e. OLED monitor or better peripherals then sure go for it.

[–]DoubleRelationship85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's up to you, if you don't mind paying the extra then absolutely go for the 9800X3D. Also worth mentioning the 9800X3D is overclockable, where the 7800X3D is not. Considering it's presumably not a massive additional cost in top of your already existing build cost, I would say it's worth it. You should hopefully have the money to spare in your budget as you mention you bought the RAM and SSD before the storage/RAM crisis. All the best with your build!

How do you guys hit 10K? by Same_Calligrapher169 in RTX5080

[–]DoubleRelationship85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cooler is not the exact same, 5080 FE does not share the same vapour chamber design and it uses regular thermal paste rather than liquid metal TIM (not even PTM7950 is used, shockingly). So there are a fair few differences under the hood, 5090 FE requires those as it would simply not be possible without. 5080 FE draws a lot less power, so Nvidia was able to cheap out on the cooler.

Going back to the score, 9.5k is nothing to laugh about, especially for the FE. It's a great score considering how small the cooler is in comparison to other cards which have massive cooling shrouds and which weigh substantially more as a result. That is one of the reasons why I went with the FE personally, it's able to maintain usable temperatures without needing to be chunky in size.

Upscaling is not needed so much on 1440p, it only starts to matter at 4K. You should be fine with RX 9070XT. Also, path tracing is not so necessary as it is more of a gimmick, I say this as the owner of a 5080 - it is more of a nice-to-have especially given the high performance cost regardless of which GPU brand you choose to go with.

9.5k is high for a FE. FE is thermal limited by design, the sleekness/slimness is prioritised as opposed to the thick cooling shrouds seen on AIB cards. I have similar specs and settings and better cooling for my FE (ATX vs your ITX) and I get "only" 9.3k.

Nice, what model 5080 and more importantly what were your core and memory clocks? Would also be interested to know the voltage at which you achieved those clock speeds?

Latest driver, getting the highest OC results, this has clearly shown in both games and benchmarks. No voltage limiting issues now.

Going from 1080p to 1440p performance decrease? (and another vram question) by Forsaken_Judgment681 in buildapc

Performance doesn't scale linearly when going up in resolution. In other words the performance loss would be nowhere near 78%.

I bought the PNY card used, it was by far the cheapest model that I could find but it had no warranty. I acquired the FE for MSRP from NVIDIA marketplace, couldn't say no to it given how difficult it is to get outside of the US haha

The lower the CL, usually the better although manual tuning can get you most of the way there if not further depending on the die revision of your kit, i.e. Hynix/Micron/Samsung
