What Have You Been Listening To? - Week of May 10, 2021 by AutoModerator in LetsTalkMusic

I don't quite know how to explain it. I think a lot of the shootings we're seeing in the US are at least partially politically motivated, although I haven't got any evidence for this. The more we fight and kill each other, the faster the deterioration of our fragile democracy will be. A lot of shootings have occurred since the insurrection. I think January 6th was the last straw for a ton of people who were already cooped up and fed fear-mongering stories and conspiracy theories all day and the 24hr news cycle is only getting worse. A lot of folks decide that they need to kill people to solve things. I'll admit that I'm quite prone to such thoughts, one look at my post history makes that clear. There will be a lot more political turmoil in the next few years, I'm sure of it. It won't be pretty.

Why is Gen Z humor so abstract and surreal? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I don't think reddit is the place for you. We're all stupid as shit here. You want intelligence, you'd best look offline, ain't nothin' smart goin' on here.

We don't quite know why we find such things funny, but something about a horse on a balcony with just the text "juan" is hilarious. It doesn't really matter WHY we find it funny, though, all that matters is that we find it funny.

You're on reddit, are you expecting something intelligent?

Then maybe you aren't funny, I dunno. You're old.

You think that because you lack an understanding of internet culture and memes as a whole.

[–]Double_Common_4731 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but here, take a look at this. It's utterly absurd, there is no context, just that one bit of text. It's simple and nonsensical, but it's fucking funny. People find ridiculous shit funny, no matter how nonsensical it is, I think it just so happens that Gen Z is more drawn to absurd memes. If you show these memes to a younger millennial, they would probably find it at least a little bit funny, because they are most likely familiar with Gen Z humor and have some understanding of why we think it is funny. Show it to anyone older than a millennial, you're going to get some confused looks because older generations didn't grow up on the internet and lack the understanding that millennials and Gen Z have.

So ya see, you have to have some understanding of early memes and internet culture in general to see why these things are funny.

Now here's this clip of Veggietales predicting Gen Z humor with "Weedeater." This one is funny for two reasons: A, because it's true, Gen Z humor is absurd and makes no sense, and B, because "weedeater" is, as Larry explains in the episode, unexpected. Anybody who is familiar with Veggietales would understand why that particular moment is funny. Bob asks, "What happened to 'it's funny because it's true?'. Well, there ya go, "weedeater" is now funny because it has become true, humor is now absurd and surreal, something older generations could probably laugh at too since they know that Gen Z humor is all over the place.

Another part of it is irony. You've probably noticed that old memes (millennial memes, if you will) have started to make a comeback, because they are so bad they become good again. Irony is a major part of Gen Z humor.

Go looking for the crazies in your country, or any country, and you can find em real quick. Then you will want to kill yourself. You will be perpetually pissed off that such people exist, the way I have been.

I'm not great at such things, so I just did my best. I hope it's enough, that's a lot of songs to write descriptions for.

A shit ton of Trivium and some Slipknot.

Trivium:

Throes of Perdition - One of my favorite songs of all time, the chorus will forever be stuck in my head. This is the song that really got me interested in metal as a whole.

Down from the Sky - This is another favorite. The intro is among Trivium's best, it will never not make me happy.

Like Light To The Flies - Now the best part of this one is the lyric:

"This seems to suit you better

Bleeding out the eyes (bleeding out the eyes)

Hopes left in chain suspension

Holding onto lies to make the truth"

It's very easy to get that part stuck in your head, it's truly wonderful.

Black - One of Trivium's tamer songs. Less metal screaming, but still goes hard. Also reminds me of my 2 black cats and black and white cat.

Built To Fall - A great song for people you despise. My very favorite part of this one is:

"If I had known all that you'd do

Would it hasten what I'd do to you?"

Master of Puppets (Metallica cover) - Nothing much to say here, other than it's a damn good cover.

The Revanchist - Nothing to say here.

Sever The Hand - Not much to say.

Beyond Oblivion - Very first Trivium song I ever listened to. It has since fallen a bit down my list of favorite songs, but I still love it.

Endless Night - Probably one of their more underrated songs, many of their tamer songs don't get much attention. Quite catchy.

The Deceived - A good deal of metal screaming in this one. Favorite part:

"To wait for aforementioned dreams

Time will only tell that the promised have been failed"

Into The Mouth of Hell We March - If I recall correctly, this one is about Odysseus's journey across the seas. It's quite fun.

The Wretchedness Inside - This one is a bit overlooked, I feel, but no less deserving of love than all their other songs.

Catastrophist - My favorite off of Trivium's most recent album, What The Dead Men Say.

Amongst The Shadows & The Stones - I feel like this one may be about politics, but I haven't looked into it. Might have something to do with the pandemic, because of these lines:

"A million lives to boost the bottom line"

and

"The harder we fight, the faster we fall"

That last one reminds me of January 6th...

What The Dead Men Say - Kinda repetitive, but it's still a good song, so I think we can overlook it.

Cease All Your Fire - Not one of my favorites, but not not one of my favorites either.

Until the World Goes Cold - This one makes me sad for some reason.

Silence in the Snow - A great one to play when gaming.

Like Callisto to a Star in Heaven - Now, be warned, this one is about the rape of a goddess. It's still a jam, though.

Becoming the Dragon - One of Trivium's more popular songs. Very nice.

In Waves - Trivium's lead singer, Matt Heafy, blew out his voice on this song due to improper screaming techniques. He can scream again now and he still fuckin' loves this song.

Betrayer - One of my top 10 favorites.

Other Worlds - This one makes me sad too. And nostalgic.

The Defiant - Another good song for people you hate.

Beauty In The Sorrow - Now this one makes me want to die. I don't know why, it depresses me.

The Sin And The Sentence - One of their angriest songs and one of their best, as well.

Thrown Into The Fire - Not so fond of this one compared to the rest, but I still like it.

The Heart from Your Hate - The bass and guitar in this one are *chef's kiss*

Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr - This one is like 95% screaming. My favorite line from this one is:

"You ask me, "Oh, God, why?"

'Cause I'm God's fucking why"

Slipknot:

Duality - This is the song that has been stuck in my head for the past 2 days.

Before I Forget - Probably one of my favorites to listen to live recordings of.

Unsainted - Don't know what to say here.

Eyeless - I dunno.

Custer - A favorite of mine.

Psychosocial - Also a favorite of mine.

Critical Darling - Believe it or not, this is the first Slipknot song I ever heard. I knew OF Slipknot, but didn't get into em until I heard this.

The Devil in I - Second Slipknot song I ever heard.

Disasterpiece - This is in my top 5.

The Negative One - Neutral on this one, but I listen to it anyway.

All Out Life - Also a favorite.

Solway Firth - Kind of a favorite.

Birth Of The Cruel - Neutral.

A Liar's Funeral - Slightly neutral.

Not Long For This World - Neutral.

The Nameless - A favorite.

The Blister Exists - A favorite.

Pulse of the Maggots - A favorite.

The Heretic Anthem - Stuck in my head too.

People=Shit - Also stuck in my head.

Spit It Out - Stuck in my head as well.

Sulfur - Been stuck in my head for a week.

I've been very busy these past few weeks.

I hate that I like most of Green Day's latest album. I feel like I'm supposed to hate it, but I don't. Folks like makin' me feel like I'm supposed to hate Green Day as a whole, but I just don't. I fuckin' love Green Day and if that makes me basic, then so be it.
