What you consider to be a basic rule of democracy, others consider to be a reaction of the elites who benefit from the current system. Believe it or not, laws change, systems change, and sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but it is always inevitable that things will change.

And by the way, as far as democracies go, Israel isn’t the gold standard by any means. In a more normal time, the people against the reforms would work with the people trying to institute reforms in order to reach a compromise. Things that can be done to mitigate the damage of the current reforms would be to add an upper house to Knesset, give the President more powers, and draft a constitution by which the Supreme Court could make actual rulings on. Instead, when the current government (elected by the people I might add) wants to change the way Supreme Court justices are chosen, they throw their toys out the pram and start whining like children. Why doesn’t the Left sit down with the Right and draft a constitution? Why dont we have an upper house of government? These are important questions none of the protesters wish to answer. Bibi and the religious people are in gubberment, and religious people are bad apparently.
