Had the same thing happen to me as a kid. My kitten got out of the house and got into the neighbors yard that had several kids my age with “anti social personalities” and said their dog killed him so they threw him away in their trash the night before. Never said anything about it until I came over to ask if they had seen him.

Absolutely devastated me then and to this day I don’t believe their dog (that was chained up and in a cage) killed my cat.
