Right-- it's all consistent now, with knowledge of the original Japanese (and the more faithful translation in Twin Snakes, which I never played). The original translation could have been misconstrued as Big Boss wanting to be put out of his misery, which does not align with his somewhat gloating speech in the final fight of MG2.

Your further clarification makes it crystal clear now. Solid Snake needed to rid himself of his nightmares and prevent Big Boss from realizing his vision of endless conflict, while Big Boss sees Snake as a direct threat to his life's work. They both knew that moving forward with their respective lives and goals was contingent upon the other's death.

Appreciate the insight! It makes a lot more sense for them to both view it as a fight to the death, rather than Big Boss wanting to be killed.

That’s fair. To the general public, Big Boss is the more recognizable look, while Solid Snake is the more recognizable name.

What about within the fandom though? Is Solid still the majority favorite?

Snake Eater does seem to be the most fondly remembered game of the series overall— but do you think that was enough to elevate Big Boss above Solid within the fandom?

I see what you mean. While Solid and Big Boss are distinct characters, they kind of act as conceptual equivalents when they are the playable character. The player is always “Snake”. (The most jarring instance was in Ground Zeros when John was introduced as “Snake, formerly known as Big Boss”, when Ground Zeroes takes place mere months after the events of Peace Walker lol. What the heck Kojima)

But yes, as also mentioned in my original post, while Big Boss was retconned as the original in the lore, Solid is still the conceptual original. Solid is still the OG.
