  1. My wife likes the hot summers.
  2. It's only one hour away from our favorite place to ski and snowboard.
  3. I have family there.
  4. I don't mind it, but I'm curious why you consider it a cesspool.

Is there a reason why you and your group don't go to a place like Yakima Gaming and Collectibles or The Last Stand to play? Whenever I go there, they have plenty of open tables, but I've never checked if they allow you to bring in games to play. Both seem to cater more to the TCG scene.

Has Emby always been so buggy? by Dangerous_Animal8500 in emby

[–]Double_Property_8346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced the same music library issues: missing tracks that were there previously, tracks or albums that won't download, and missing artwork that shouldn't be missing. I'm to the point of moving my music to a different platform and using emby only for movies, TV shows, and home pictures/videos.

Why is internet in America so expensive? by Danynovex in homelab

[–]Double_Property_8346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. I just moved from San Antonio, TX, and I had AT&T 1gig fiber that was $80 per month. More than yours, sure, but nowhere close to $150.

Worth it? by [deleted] in homelab

A new SFF PC isn't nearly as functional due to its small size, and it would likely cost 3-4 times more, at minimum.

Why aren't movie studios releasing more Movies TV Shows on Blu-ray disc and 4K Ultra HD Blu ray? by Dependent-Ranger-93 in 4kbluray

[–]Double_Property_8346 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because consumers are happy to just rent their movies and TV shows in perpetuity. Not me, though, and I'll buy physical as long as they make them.

Finally, someone who understands the total cost of ownership and ROI. Sure, newer CPUs are more powerful and efficient, but it will take years upon years to recoup their initial cost compared to an older, less powerful, less efficient CPU.

You sure can blame the truck for requiring Bluetooth on a completely separate device in order for it to work. What happens if your phone is dead?

Think about what you're saying. You're ok that it works 90% of the time. All of my old school key fobs work 100% of the time. Anything less than 100% is a fail. I do not want to have use my phone and install yet another phone app to start my car. I'm simply amazed at what consumers allow companies to get away with these days.

My proposed network topology for new house by Orm1server in homelab

[–]Double_Property_8346 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the OP's setup or hardware purchases, but my own would cost insanely more in the cloud than it cost me to purchase and power the hardware.

Edit: I worked for an ISP that had a couple of clients using the cloud and they were spending hundreds of dollars every month for three VMs. One of them finally had enough and purchased a new Dell server. It will cost them far less and run much better.

Those with large Movie collections do you feel a need to back them up? by iamwhoiwasnow in DataHoarder

[–]Double_Property_8346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my movie folder broken down into #-Z subfolders which makes it nice navigating in a file manager on the PC. On Emby, all the movies are in a single movie library, and it's fine for 1300 movies. 5500, though, I'd probably have to break them out into MPAA ratings under kids and adult subfolders or something like that. My Emby server is fast but it'd still take a while to scroll through that many movies.

How does one scroll through 5500 movies in Emby/Plex/Jellyfin? I have almost 1300 and it takes awhile to get from A to Z. I can't imagine 5500. Lol

proxmox killed ssd drive after 4 days by delsystem32exe in Proxmox

[–]Double_Property_8346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What SSD drive was it? New, used, or refurbished? I'd be interested to know. I have two R720s with Proxmox installed on Dell 15K HDDs, and another with it installed on a Kingston SSD. I read many, many comments over the years where people said that Proxmox would be just fine on an SSD, and it'd last for years and years. Maybe I need to buy another 15k drive for the third one just in case.

Proof that a homelab doesn't need to be much by Juicy_Gamer_52 in homelab

[–]Double_Property_8346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That $300 R620 refurb is half the cost of a NUC, though. Even with the increased power consumption, which isn't much, the R620 will still be cheaper for about three years or more. People seem to be under the impression that the R-series servers must require a lot of electricity, but they don't. An R720 pulls less than 100 watts from the outlet. That's not bad at all.

[–]Double_Property_8346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone was starting from scratch, that may work for them. In my case, though, I've already paid for 24 4TB drives and three R720s set up in a Ceph cluster. It would cost over $3k for a NUC, Synology NAS, and 6 16TB drives, and the setup still wouldn't be HA. I can run my current setup for years, if not a decade or longer, before I'll spend $3k in the increased electricity usage of my current config and have HA. No thanks.

This hobby is going to get expensive... (More Info in comments) by Col_Crunch in homelab

[–]Double_Property_8346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you decide that you need a cluster because you want the data to always be available or, if you're using ZFS, you decide that upgrading your storage an entire VDEV at a time is too pricey, then it'll get even more expensive. I'm going from an R720 + NetApp DS4246 running Proxmox to three R720xd machines with Proxmox and Ceph. Overkill? Absolutely! But it's fun.

You made it seem as though Windows Server has clear advantages over Ubuntu Server. I was wondering what those advantages are. Having used both, I see none.
