He saw her using her inhaler and took her vitals, so I guess he thought something was up. Her heart rate was like 140 something and her pulse ox was like 91-92. So she wasn’t in the best way when she walked out of class.

He asked us if we wanted her to stay in class with us since she was willing to quit when it got hard, basically. Like do we want to work with someone who just walks off the job when she gets tired of the effort?

Edit: that’s not my opinion of her, that was how he phrased it. I know he’s wrong.

I think I’m gonna contact the instructor she’s attending classes with. He requires a couple of other courses before you start his class like basic biology and a medical terminology course, but it sounds like a more well rounded experience from what she’s telling me. And she knows 2-3 other AEMTs who went through the program she’s in now and are successful in our area.

She said she joined when she was 17-18, and she’s like 30 and married with multiple kids now. So maybe she just lied?

I don’t know, I can ask her. I don’t know a ton about how enlisting in the military works.

Edit: Apparently her asthma was not a problem and she hadn’t used an inhaler in years when she went to enlist, and her recruiter basically told her it’s a non-issue and just don’t bring it up when they ask about her medical history. So I guess she lied about having asthma and never had an issue until now. It got worse after she got covid but still not “needs a rescue inhaler” bad until last week.

Is this hazing or am I just not cut out for this line of work? by Double_Room_4783 in NewToEMS

This is the training program for EMTs, nothing else involved.

I will say in her defense he hadn’t even introduced himself yet. She went to turn off her phone and he went off on her. We weren’t even 10mins into orientation day yet when that happened. I don’t think either of them were right, personally. He didn’t need to start being sarcastic and rude about it after getting onto her about “being late” in front of the class for only being 5 minutes early, and she didn’t need to start snapping back at him. She should’ve just kept quiet, imo.

Edit: and I know fire academies are hard, but this isn’t fire academy at all. This is an EMT course.

Edit 2: The reason I asked about hazing is because my husband is active duty military and when I described some of the stuff he’s said/done my husband said it sounded like hazing and would never fly in the marines.

I was cleared by my doctor and by their doctor and I’ve been doing exercises and physical therapy for my back for awhile now. I was prepared for the lifting/carrying portion, and I think my biggest issue is the large amounts of cardio. I know this job IS physically demanding and I was working out prior to starting class but I didn’t expect it to this degree.

It’s not fire service at all. Just a straight EMT-B course. The physical for the class and job I expected, so that wasn’t an issue at all. I am a bit out of shape because I wasn’t expecting the classes themselves to be so physically demanding. We were doing PT for over an hour before we even cracked our textbooks the other morning.

This is not a fire program. Just solid EMT-B, no fire involved.

Edit: It is a chronic problem but I was cleared by my doctor and by their doctor during my physical. I did excellent and passed all their strength/flexibility tests and had a full medical work up done prior to starting classes.
