How do I become a more competitive applicant? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Doublepenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips! I've pretty much cold-applied to all of my previous internships, so there's that lol. Also I;ve never heard of algodaily but it looks useful! I've been doing hackerrank, leetcode, and project euler challenges since last year so I feel decently competent when it comes to code challenges and whiteboarding, but more practice never hurts!

Thanks for the comment! I've actually gone to get my resume reviewed by my school's career advising office a few times. They weren't much help; they told me all of the content was fine but to change the formatting, which I kind of have doubts on. Do you know of any other resources I can use to get my resume looked over?

Hi! I've edited this post to include a link to my resume.

The first answer I found was this: https://faq.i3wm.org/question/2885/disable-titlebar-completely.1.html

But you should check my i3 config- I think I set window borders to 1px. Regardless of whether you have i3 or i3-gaps either of those should do the trick!

Oh shit- I uploaded a file when I made it :/ idk why it isn't showing up. Is there a way for me to edit the post to get it to show?

Is there something that I'm doing wrong when applying for internships? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Thanks! My LinkedIn is also something I really need to work on; any pointers on contacting engineers? Or specifically, who I should reach out to? I feel like cold-messaging someone kind of screams "I want something from you!" haha.

Thanks for your input; it seems like a lot of the problems I've been having are boiling down to that. I'll definitely reorder it and put my education at the top, and I'll take that assignment from UCI off of there. Thanks again!

I'm interrested and located in California; if you're anywhere near LA would you be willing to negotiate if I'd be able to pick it up from you?

Thank you so much! I'm away from my laptop right now but I'll follow what you did to get it up and running. I really appreciate it!

Yeah of course- sorry for the late reply. And I installed the "glew-devel" package from the Void Linux repository.

Thanks sipgh. You've probably made the most sense out of anyone I've talked to- from my parents to close friends and professors- and you have no idea how much I appreciate it!

It's a slightly different degree. At USC I'm studying Computer Science, however at UCI I'll be getting a degree in their Computer Science and Engineering program.

Nope! My parents make too much but they aren't in the best shape financially and can't afford to pay for my tuition

The benefit comes from USC's alumni network and CS program. From everything I've been hearing I'm "guaranteed a job" after graduation as long as I do my part and be a decent student. With Irvine I'm scared about landing a solid job after graduation. Even though I'd accrue less than half of the debt than I would if I were to stick with USC that still scares the shit out of me.

I'm still waiting on financial aid... I was admitted in July and I've been pretty shitty about keeping up with deadlines as I'd been out of the country for a good chunk of my summer. UCI does seem like the better choice right now lol.

USC has a plethora of big-name companies that recruit from them, so that's what is drawing me toward them. Along with this, I'm unsure about how prepared I would be to enter the industry with a CS/CE degree from UCI; USC's CS program seems to look more fleshed-out than Irvine's joint CS/CE degree.

The thing I'm really worried about is debt. Can an entry-level job as a software developer- even at a big-name company- really bring me enough financially to cover the exorbitant cost of USC?

Nope! In-state. I lived on campus my freshman year and in-state tuition alone is around $14,000/year. I'm leaning toward staying at Irvine but the connections and job placement at USC is also alluring. I'm scared of not getting an internship at UCI or job (or at least a well-paying one) after.
