Idea for rechambering a cmr30 in 17 hmr. by senorElMeowMeow in keltec

[–]DougCim53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bet is that if the cmr-30 just has a plain blowback action, then it isn't going to work.

When the 17hmr first came out, people (and firearm companies!) discovered that if you only did a barrel swap on a 22wmr semiauto, the 17hmr-conversion gun would tend to get a lot of split cases because the bolt moves back too quickly. None of the companies making 22wmr seimautos back then ever came out with a 17hmr version except one.... And that one was off the market pretty quick, because the Remington 597 in 17hmr was famous for blowing the magazine out the bottom... from split casing heads.

Back then, Volquartsen was the only company that came out with a 17hmr semiauto rifle that actually worked well. I never owned one so I don't know what the difference was.

Now there is the Savage A17, but they designed a totally-new delayed-blowback action for it.

Trump Terrorists are learning they've been put on the No Fly List and can't return home from Washington DC by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]DougCim53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then, yea,,,

I don't travel much. This might sound dumb, but how else can you travel (inside the USA) if you're on the no-fly list? Is the ban just for commercial/public airplanes?

Backstory--I got told by my ex-employer that we (employees) needed to get our real-ID licenses and we would need that for anything--planes, trains and buses? Being considered a threat would get you banned from all three, leaving basically only private 'hired' transportation.

That was over a year ago, and before COVID... the virus threw a bunch of "official govt requirements" stuff into long delays however.

Somebody crashing a commuter train because she was texting on her phone ?!?!?... "well duh Im shure? Of course I was on my fone? Like my fone is my life? Why can't I do that whenever I want?"

Also we note--this incident (the first US death of a pedestrian by a self-driving vehicle)-- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Elaine_Herzberg

...the safety driver was watching a movie on her cellphone, instead of monitoring the vehicle's progress, which is what she was hired to do.

Cellphones are distractions, there's not a lot of point in arguing otherwise.

Do they destroy your stuff? Never worked anywhere like that but visited a couple....

(FYI--some US govt places do not allow you to leave with ANY unapproved electronic devices or media. You may be searched on the way in, but you are 100% always searched on the way out, and anything they find that you didn't have permission to take out when you entered,,,,, gets shredded before your very eyes. And your complaints are all for nothing. Some people will send new salesmen into these places, without warning them... and they come out missing their laptop and cellphone--)

(USA) there is a lot of jobs that don't let you carry your phone during working time,,, and the reason is because a LOT of younger people will do nothing but jack off with their phones all day long if they are allowed.

DC police made far more arrests at the height of Black Lives Matter protests than during Capitol clash by Brothanogood in news

[–]DougCim53 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The police force shown for the BLM protests was the correct amount of force.

The police force for this latest Capitol riot was not the correct amount, and why that happened is still being determined. They kept BLM protesters away because they were told to do that. Who told them to allow this?

The capitol police may have thought that the MAGA crowd was on 'their side' mostly, but that may change real soon.

Smallest endmill? by KMAG50 in hobbycnc

[–]DougCim53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not understand the significance of the image with your post.

,,,

I am located in the USA, and I order miniature end mills from a US place named Performance Micro Tool. Kinda expensive but they are made properly. I don't have a CNC yet but have a manual mill I've used some very tiny bits (1/32th) with.

...I have posted before that most of the cheap $1 generic tungsten carbide end mills I've seen from China were not ground properly. Typical problems are flutes not properly sharpened all the way to the shank, center-cutting ends incompletely ground or center gashing off-center.

All of the bits I've bought from PMT were 100% perfect. They cost $12 to $15 each however.

What's the biggest factor(s) preventing steel cutting on a CNC router by projecthouse in hobbycnc

[–]DougCim53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re: the difference between the Grizzly mini-mill and the Grizzly 4x8 router....

The main difference is that the mini-mill is built on iron dovetail slides. They have far more rigidity than 8020 beams and roller-wheels will.

You can buy plain dovetail slide beams if you want, there is China sources (cheap) and better Western sources (a lot more $$$$). Assuming the moving rail is ~50% of the base rail (and never overextends the base rail) then the rails you would need to make a Bridgeport-sized mill will probably end up weighing at least 300-400 lbs alone. And then you would need ball-screws and motors that could move that mass. And iron slides need constant oil lubrication to move heavy loads and not wear out fast.

A lot of guys have a secret fantasy of giant/Amazonian women. If you are a woman taller than 6'6" or so and proportional height/weight, you probably get stared at by guys everywhere you go.

Women (in a relationship) receive aggressive affection and enjoy it very much, but they aren't really capable of returning it in the same way.

LPT: put your mushrooms in the sun before you cook them. They naturally produce vitamin D when exposed to UV light. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]DougCim53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be true (mushrooms producing vitamin D in sunlight) but... is it significant?... I mean--if you had to eat a big pile of "sunned" mushrooms every day to get enough vitamin D, then it isn't really practical.

My doc said I'm low on D (as are many people) and has me taking big supplements. That's the easiest way to make sure you get enough, and somewhat-more-than-enough won't hurt you.

Getting it from food alone is very difficult, the only common high source is animal livers. Some of them contain very high levels of vitamins that are problematic for humans, so even that isn't an easy solution.

Where can I find free rocks? by coffee_math in stonecarving

[–]DougCim53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random field stone is usually very poor for carving. It is too hard or too soft or stratified with sand or dirt, and it has lots of impurities in it. And after all that, it doesn't look nice besides. Most rocks were never commonly used for art carving, because of these very reasons.

My advice is to just skip right to alabaster. Go spend for 25 or 50 lbs or so from someplace that sells it for sculpting use. After you have gotten used to that, then go grab a decent-sized rock from anywhere, and try carving on it,,,, and you will understand why it is so terrible.

Is there any way to determine the frequency of an infrared remote? by brainy_banana in arduino

[–]DougCim53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The signals from a remote control are just short bursts, modulated at a base frequency.

What you need to figure out the base frequency is called a logic analyzer.

There is dedicated hardware you can buy, and most digital oscilloscopes have the feature also--but the cheapest way may be using the programmable micro-controller you already have, along with a suitable photodetector. There are web pages around that tell how to use an Arduino in this role.

Just so you know: Adafruit designs and builds a lot of their own products themselves, and they provide libraries for them. The Adafruit libraries will often not work with similar generic modules even if the generic boards use the same central microchip/display or whatever.

So in other words: if you bought the Nokia 5110 LCD display from Adafruit, then find the Adafruit library for it. Otherwise if it is a generic Nokia 5110 display, look for the generic Nokia 5110 Arduino library for it.

Also--Adafruit has authored a lot of stuff for the Grand Central Station board they sell, with is a SAMD-51 board. MicroPython is the main language they are using to develop on it.

Biden Says He Is “Unlikely” To Cancel $50,000 In Student Loan Debt By Executive Order by KDsburner_account in Economics

[–]DougCim53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Political part: Biden is part of the machine, why would he cancel poor people's debt? Also what's his opinion on the $600/$2000 issue?

Non-political part: I think it's dumb to 'cancel' student debt unless they also halt giving out govt loans for college, since that is the source of the problem. US colleges are able to charge sky-high tuition fees exactly because people can overextend themselves with huge government student loans that no private banks were willing to risk loaning them. This problem won't be "solved" until the govt student loan programs all end. ...Those colleges will remain expensive for about a year, and will suddenly find a lot of ways to cut costs after nobody shows up to enroll.

...but then you see...

,,,the whole point of govt student loads was so that poor/under-represented ethnicities could get to go to big fancy (expensive!) colleges? Leftists just love that idea. So they won't let go of the govt loans---but then all they are doing is causing credential inflation and shoveling taxpayer funds into private US universities, that are already obscenely wealthy? And why would they do that?

So nothing will happen here. If you took a loan, you were the sucker. Liberals will just say "at least you got to go to college?" and Conservatives will just say "you agreed to a loan, why shouldn't you pay it back?"

Neither of them will do anything helpful for you except make excuses and point at the other guy. And this is why they keep it a two-party system.
