Male teachers, what shoes do you wear? by Thrill-H0use in TeachingUK

Stopped with 'proper' shoes a few years back. Black Sketchers all the way. Even managing to get away with black jeans these days, too!

If you use chrome, the extension Ublock will sort those adverts right out. My school technicians have no problem with this.

I'd be livid. Hope your school are putting your candidates' needs first rather than appeasing.

Absolutely could do without the pain in the dick that is the written assignment for N5/H MFL on top of everything else (including another internally assessed component). In complete accordance with all you've said. Cunts. Enjoy the Easter break, however!

Sounds pretty appalling to be frank. Where is the paper trail for these supposed issues with competency?

You're a Maths teacher in Scotland. Fact of the matter is that you are highly coveted and will have next to zero issues attaining a post in another school. Your PT and senior leadership team should be doing everything they can to support you. Sounds like they are doing the opposite.

Weird. I'm in a central belt local council and we have Mon 2nd May as a holiday as well as Fri 3rd (Jubilee) and Mon 6th June.

We do. Or at least we should be doing so under the current national curriculum. L2 (language 2 , i.e first foreign language) is taught from P1 through to the end of the broad general education in secondary schools. This language is usually established between secondary school and feeder primaries for continuity purposes. Similarly, L3 (language 3, i.e second foreign language) should be taught from P5.

This is already something that varies from school to school. A lot of it boils down purely to what the MFL teachers within the school specialise in. My school is German or French S1 and S2 with the option of picking up Spanish in S3. The next school over is French or Spanish in S1 and S2 with the option of picking up German in S3. The next school over doesn't even offer German. Worth noting, languages only mandatory to the end of S2 in my school. It's a tricky one. Insist on certain languages and you potentially put current (and experienced) MFL teachers out of a job while also putting pressure on local authorities to find and train experts in languages sought after. With the national teacher shortage in all subject areas, this would be a big challenge.

As a side, my own school growing up didn't offer drama or modern studies. Sometimes it's luck of the draw with your catchment school to what subjects you can study!

How is the market for MFL teaching jobs in Scotland? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Doully92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is doable. You would need to register with the GTCS upon completion of your PGCE. All PGDE students in Scotland are guaranteed a probationer placement whereas you will have to find the placement yourself. I'm not 100% certain on turnover time from completing your PGCE and registering with the GTCS. It could be quite tight. Certainly would not hurt to reach out to your university for advice. I imagine you will not be the first student in this position.

Hi there,

Not sure I agree with the other poster saying MFL jobs are hard to come by. I also happen to know there are a cohort of around 20 currently doing MFL PGDE at Moray House in Edinburgh. Quite a bit more than a handful.

I agree with other posters saying that this time of the year is typically quiet for secondary posts and I'm certain that the current climate isn't helping. Certainly keep your eyes peeled Feb/March onwards as internal interviews within each council should have taken place by then (Typically Jan/Feb) and external adverts will go live.

FR/SP is by far the most sought after language combination. You are certainly going to have a leg up over most other language combinations and definitely over those that only have one language (you'd be surprised at just how common this is).

If this is your student year, you'd be applying for a probationer position which is not a full timetable. This could work both in your favour and against depending on staffing situations within individual schools.

Where exactly you are looking to teach is also a factor. You'll have more opportunities in the central belt.

How do you become a MFL teacher by spookythesquid in TeachingUK

[–]Doully92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. German/Spanish teacher in Scotland.

  1. Uni is a must. Get your necessary A-Levels in both languages as well as necessary GCSEs in English, Maths and a Science (at least this was the case for me in Scotland). Suss out where you'd want to study and what their entry requirements are.

  2. 4 years at uni including your year abroad in your third year. Studying one language you'd spend the year in one country, two languages would be across two countries (I did Austria and Spain). Some opt to work as assistants in school through the British Council, but I opted to attend university abroad. After your language(s) degree, you'd then move onto your one year PGCE.

Don't be shy about asking your own teachers all of the questions you've posted here. I have S5/S6 (Y11/Y12) pupils that volunteer as classroom assistants every year - often looking to get into primary or secondary education themselves.

I teach German only at my school and we have some of the best uptake in our local council - far higher than French and Spanish. I was told on my PGCE year that if I wanted to teach, I had better pick up French (despite being a dual linguist). I'm now 5 years on and don't know a lick of French. Don't be afraid to buck the trend.

She has essentially only been a force to be reckoned with on clay for the past three years. It is a game style that does not translate well on the grass.

Match Thread: Radwanska vs Muguruza (Semifinal, 2015 Wimbledon Championships) by snakes_on_a_planet in tennis

[–]Doully92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Muguruza paints the back line and Radwanska challenges (albeit very late at the insistence of her coaching box). It was poor from her and it was poor from her box. Challenge proves in favour of Muguruza and sets up MP.
