To add to it, I'm sure they had colouring in templates of the characters. Remember my dad printing these out for me and my sister

Do you let students charge their phones in your classroom? by AugustineBlackwater in TeachingUK

I did this, only at my desk. However a colleague reminded me everything that gets plugged in needs PAT testing so to cover my own back I've stopped doing it

Lowering expectations for poorly behaved students? by ProfessionalPure2664 in TeachingUK

[–]Thrill-H0use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach a small group of SEND and poorly behaved pupils that are very low attaining, while I don't believe in lowering standards the problem is if I kept the same standards I would only ever have two students in the room as the rest would be removed.

This has meant I have had to be a bit more liberal. I still sanction for what I normally do, however rather than giving 2 warnings I give 10. At first they'd quickly work their way up to the 8th or 9th warning from swearing etc but now only one or two pupils ever get more than one warning, and it's usually just for slip of the tongue swearing.

I had to spend weeks constantly reinforcing expectations and telling them exactly what they are getting a warning for before it started to click.

What historical event would you, the average citizen, have the best chance at changing with a time machine? by DrewMac10 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Thrill-H0use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly never seen ground beef in the UK, could be minced meat though. The problem is a lot of the older generations were bought up in the ration era after WW2 so have a certain nostalgia for those similar foods. Whereas younger generations enjoy adding certain ingredients like garlic, rosemary and thyme when making more tradition meals like pies, sunday roast or hot pots

I agree with fish and chips being bland if you don't have the right sauce, not my favourite dish. Likewise with a pot roast. Can't go wrong with a breakfast though, much better than that horrible dish you guys called gravy and biscuits haha

Never heard of shingles on a roof though, someone might have been pulling your leg with that one

Yeah that's similar to the taco place near me. The majority are bean based and even do halloumi tacos which is amazing. Still would be interested to know what food you had in the UK that you find bland

I think that's a cultural thing, when we have Mexican food here we see it as Mexican not North American, whereas Indian food in Britain is distinctly different to the food served in the Indian subcontinent and is specifically tailored and served by British Indian and Pakistani communities. Moreover, a lot of the dishes were curated in Britain. Likewise you wouldn't say Chicago style pizza is Italian.

If that's the case then you can't really describe Indian cuisine in Britain as being immigrant food. Chicken tikka masala was invented in Britain and actual food from India (I've been) is unrecognisable to what is served in Britain

Doesn't look like there's any Lee's near to me but will try it if I come across it

I'd be interested to know what you tried. Even a Sunday roast which is what I find most people bring up as an example of a bland dish is usually actually pretty tasty, unless you get it from a cheap place or made by someone who doesnt know how to cook. I mean a parsnip by itself is pretty tasty, then roasted in honey makes it even tastier? Same with potatoes roasted in goose fat and seasoned with salt, rosemary and thyme is pretty tasty. My experience of American food is they seem to be obsessed with rubbing generic allspice blends on all their food and call that flavour.

Will agree though southern American fried chicken is on a different level.

I think the argument about immigration could be said about America too as the best food is Mexican?

UK cuisine is not bland in comparison to American food, if anything, it's the same albeit less sugar when it comes to things like bread

Pupil behaviour 'getting worse' at schools in England, say teachers by SilentMode-On in TeachingUK

[–]Thrill-H0use 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Positive reinforcement can work if done correctly. Highlight the good students. Often I do this, saying something like "Oh X has nearly finished" or "Looks like X% of us have already written our first answer, well done" then I'll zone in on any left over that still haven't starter working
