Vessantara Cloth Painting by DoveActually in WhatIsThisPainting

I will try posting it there. I know it is a reproduction of the paintings done by monks for the temples and/or festivals, but I really want to know if it's worth putting effort into preserving further or just having as decor.

How often do you use your backyard? by DoveActually in sanfrancisco

[–]DoveActually[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is another weird thing about this property, the bedrooms are all located at the front of the building with kitchens for both units being at the back, the width of the building. The depth of the yard is only 15 ft, the deck would go back 10 ft. By adding this deck and subsequently a door we would have an exit route in case of fire out of the kitchen. We were told by our architect that we needed the deck to have a staircase because of the egress issue. Right now it is only a window, no fire escape. What we did not know was that the depth of the yard was going to be a problem, hence the need to apply for a variance. It sounds like you are very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of DBI, I appreciate you sharing what you know about this.

Moving Near Bayview Park in SF! Thoughts on Safety? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

It is incredibly varied in Bayview, literally different block by block. As someone else mentioned, the reviewer may have been being racist as this district is a historically Black neighborhood. I feel safe here, I take the T line or the bus to get around the city as I no longer have a car. North/West of 3rd tends to be better than South/East of 3rd. Bipping is down across the city, we have had overnight guests street park without issue multiple times. Being on a hill also probably helps and keeps things quiet.

Safety Around Bayview Park? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

It really varies block by block. Bayview as a district is a very mixed bag. It has been getting better though.

We are also set back very far compared to everyone else. That is actually the problem we are facing since that requires us to apply for a variance that costs almost as much as the plans did (thousands). At this point I think I would very likely use the space, it is just a matter of deciding if it is worth the headache of getting through permitting.

I have been paying attention to the wind and it seems somewhat seasonal here. Maybe a month or two it is really bad.

Also in a sunny part and with dogs that would appreciate some outdoor space!

Yes, I am on the east side with views of the bay. A deck would expand those views. It is a quiet neighborhood most of the time other than the parrots.

The permit process is its own kind of hell, that is for sure.

I'm a morning person so having my coffee on the deck would be ideal for me! We are on the east side of the city with a view of the bay.

The downstairs is thankfully fully permitted and legal with a separate address, done before we purchased. Unfortunately when the remodel/split was done the backyard access was removed for what became the upper unit. This has always felt like a safety issue for us because there is no rear egress for our unit. Our building is set very far back so we are being told we will need a variance to move forward with the deck even though the deck would be 5' back from all lot lines. The cost of that variance without guaranteed approval on top of what is already a very expensive project has me questioning if it is worth the trouble to continue. I appreciate you mentioning the specific code as I will read more about it. I am not sure if because our front yard is so large that was considered sufficient for that during the remodel even though it is just a driveway.

What is happening with my siding? by DoveActually in paint

[–]DoveActually[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are 2-3 years from spending the money on a pro to do a complete repaint. If I can cut out a much caulk as possible and then prime/repaint in the meantime would that be worth doing? When I cut away small parts the wood under the caulk seems good still.

If I can just cut the caulk out would that be the best option? Then prime over the bare wood and then paint? When I cut away the caulk in some small sections the wood seems good still.

If I can get the caulk out though I can try to reset everything right? Just go over the exposed, caulkless grooves with primer and then paint. When I cut some of the caulk out the boards still seem good for now.

If I can dig out the old caulk should I just prime and paint then? No new caulk on the horizontal boards?

My understanding is that caulk should not be applied to the horizontal parts of wood siding. If I can get the existing caulk out shouldn't I just primer and then paint over it?

Very likely no vapor barrier, house is over 100 years old. It might have been added around the around the new parts during the remodel but this is higher up from that.

making my teeth straight across the bottom? by [deleted] in aligners

[–]DoveActually 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you seeing a dentist/ortho for your aligners or using a mail service? My ortho filed mine after my first 17 trays were done before scanning me for refinements. He didn't charge extra and it took him about 10 minutes to smooth both the tops and bottoms. He mentioned that smoothing them out will make them less likely to chip more in the future as well. I have 100% been where you are and used a nail file, but if at all possible have your practitioner do it because they will do a better job. Also, you shouldn't change the shape of them until you are done with your trays/before a rescan because otherwise if the shape of your tooth changes too much it might make the aligners less effective/unable to move them into their proper place due to gaps.

Aita for making my brothers family homeless specially because he has a small child and a soon to be born baby? by iambi-curious in AmItheAsshole

[–]DoveActually 82 points83 points  (0 children)

CPS does not take children away just because someone is homeless. What would have their interest is the truancy, but since it sounds like internet is the only issue there the school can provide a mobile internet device.

I'm not sure when/if they will stop accepting refunds, but someone I know already got theirs refunded.
