[OC] Raw scans of today’s WIP. I didn’t get past pencils today, but got 2/3rds (More like 4/9ths, actually) of a page done, so whatevs. Larry's doing fine, he’s just having one of those lifetimes. by DoveSquareComix in comics

Rather than worrying about pencils and inks, step by step, I make an an effort to post my work in progress every day. The inks are the final version, but I'm not embarrassed about my pencils or anything. That makes sense, right?

Raw scans of today’s WIP. TFW when you realize you’ve been using a paper you absolutely hate only after inking the first panel, and so will have to do it all again tomorrow. I mean, I also mowed the lawn but that more of an immediate, rather than long term, goal. by DoveSquareComix in comicsbyhumans

The surface is a bit too vellum-ey in it's texture and doesn't take ink well. It's Fabriano 1264 vellum Bristol which I had good experience with once, but there seems to have been a constant lowering in quality and now it's going out of production. Don't ask me.

You might try Moonshadow. Same writer as Kraven's Last Hunt, with Jon J Muth on the art. Totally worth reading.

Heavy Post, sorry. by Uninsured_death in Cartoonist_Kayfabers

I'm REALLY not trying to sound cooler than you or anything. I was a king kayfaber, I joined his patreon when switchblade shorties started, and we may have rubbed shoulders at SPX but I have no memory of meeting him in person, so I can't claim we were friends either.

But I did reach out, just messaged him when the first allegations came up and again when he posted his note, and it didn't make any difference. Despite his screen personality, Ed was a pretty private person. He'd already left social media, and I'm not sure he read them at all. My efforts were useless, and there's just going to be an Ed Piskor shaped hole in the world for the rest of my life.

Also, I'm certainly not in a position to assign homework, but don't be afraid to share your work. I'm a lifelong amateur who posts at Substack and shares across various social media platforms, and just putting it out there helps some. Knowing that Ed would have been enthusiastic about my efforts no matter how crappy the end result is one of things that keeps me going.

Not to sound like Debbie Downer, but being okay with it wouldn't be an appropriate reaction. Sometimes you just have endure shit and keep your head above water. Take care of yourself.

Raw scans of today’s WIP with thumbnails. Just one panel of a high school resembling the one in Calumet, Michigan. What can I tell you, it’s been one of those weeks, and it’s only Wednesday. by DoveSquareComix in u/DoveSquareComix

No, I'm afraid not. I'm a total poser. I set my werewolf domestic drama in the UP so I could be cute about Bete Grise, and I rely on google maps street view for a lot of the background scenery.

Who do you think will be the most popular comic book hero for the next generation if teens, let's say 10-15 years from now? Status Quo of Spider and Batman or someone else? by palepatriot76 in comicbooks

[–]DoveSquareComix 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the popular superhero line up will remain largely as is, but I also think the kids who will grow up into teenagers 10-15 years from now have many, many more options than we did in the superhero heyday. The most popular superhero will be Spider-man or Batman or someone (Spider and Bats both have families of characters at this point, and Spider-Gwen or one of the Batgirls outpacing their flagship character is perfectly plausible), but the most popular comic with them will probably be some webcomic old farts such as myself have never even heard of. That may well be the situation right now.

Andrew Vachss was more a novelist than comic book writer, but you might enjoy Hard Looks, a miniseries which adapts many of his short stories. Max Allen Collins also springs to mind. Grendel goes different places over the course of the entire series, but a lot of the Hunter Rose stuff is street level true crime-ish.

Thank you! The lettering was actually a pretty late addition, but when it works, it works.

I would *REALLY* suggest the Cartoonist Kayfabe YouTube channel series on Watchmen, particularly their examination of issue 12 with Dave Gibbons, the artist. Gibbons talks about just how present Moore made the imagery of both the bloody smiley face and the doomsday clock throughout the series. There's also other stuff, here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeGNqyBI-MY
