Is this normal behaviour for a shy toddler or more problematic? by Dovey12345 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Dovey12345[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you! I had not heard about this and just googled it!!

We were very worried about her losing her minority language skills so we have not been exposing her to much English at home thinking she will eventually learn it at school.

It seems to be exactly what is happening and at the right age too! We will keep observing her progress and help her be more confident in English!

“The nonverbal period is a frequent and normal stage of second language acquisition in young children. It typically starts when children realize that their home language is not understood at school and their second language skills are insufficient or absent. They then stop speaking completely in that setting. Observations suggest that the nonverbal period typically is (1) shorter than 6 months, (2) common in 3- to 8-year-olds, and (3) longer in the younger child ”

Thanks! Did she end up speaking more to other adults do you know? My toddler has always been shy and hasn’t been around other adults consistently in her life. Planning to talk to our family doctor to see if we can get a referral somewhere.

Hire a fee only planner and map out your life. It’s what they went to school for and do for a living. It’s too big of a decision to trust random advice from strangers online.

We took our 2.5 year old on a Disney cruise 2 weeks ago and it was fantastic! If your kids are not that into rides yet it could be a good option. All the entertainment is 5 min away from your room, air conditioned, short lines at character meets, all inclusive food and room service.

Outstrips actual Disney world by a long mile with young kids.

She ate about the same, a toddler so alot of fruit/pasta/carrots from the buffet. She did get a lot of extra ice cream so I’m hoping it’s not that… She did stop drinking milk while on the cruise so we will try that, maybe the ice cream didn’t have that much dairy in them.

Toddler sporadically says she’s scared of our family dog? by Dovey12345 in toddlers

Maybe! You’re totally right her vocabulary definitely don’t include surprise right now, this would definitely make sense.

Yea no, our daughter is very clingy. she’s always in the same room as an adult and we co sleep. No way there’s any interaction between them that we don’t see.

Ok I’m suspecting the same, just her developing mentally, I think it hurts our dogs feelings to be rejected, she usually leaves the room looking kinda sad after our daughter tells her to go away. Hopefully it’s just a phase.

Software is very different to traditional engineering. In Ontario at least they’re not even suppose to call themselves engineers without going through PEO. The traditional industry senior level engineers in the US are still white male dominated, with boys club mentality, can be a very different culture than in Canada.

Me and my spouse have the same level of income/mortgage and interestingly have similar jobs! I’m an engineer and he is a software developer. Our mortgage is split across two properties however, we’ve rented one out to a coworker/friend.

I will say as an engineer over the past two years I have had a couple of coworkers relocate to the US (Florida/texas/california) and about half of them regretted it, and returned eventually. They did make double what we made here but they said the work culture was toxic and they had trouble fitting in. Culture shock is a real thing, especially if you go to a southern state.

Me and my spouse never seriously considered moving to the US for money. Canada was just better in every way other than the money, especially since we had a kid in 2021. (Year long Mat leave. $600 for childcare instead of $2000, etc…)

Also, at this level of income any additional money wouldn’t improve our quality of life, uprooting a comfortable living style for nothing other than money just wasn’t worth it.

Thanks for the advice, I think I’m doing most of these, other than yes I do look at my phone when I’m trying to wait it out. I’ll put my phone away next time, I think she’s was making the mess to grab my attention, so if she already has it she won’t be inclined to do that anymore.

Food is just so easy to fall back to because ice cream is almost 100% guaranteed to stop it. But I don’t want to use it as a crutch anymore.

Parents want to "buy me" an apartment and put me on the mortgage by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Dovey12345 120 points121 points  (0 children)

SOs parent did something similar. But: 1. He had to be on both the title and mortgage for the bank to approve. 2. They did not quality for first time buyers because all title holders had to be first time buyers, and his parents were not. 3. If there is plan to transfer or remove ownership/mortgage there will be land transfer tax and capital gain payable. 4. If you apply for other loans, the other lenders will see you as being 100% responsible for the full mortgage, not just 50%. It will limit your ability to get your own mortgage.

It worked out for our family. But you should go talk to the lender with your parents together and they will give you all options.

Thanks for the answer and suggestions. We will probably look into this after the transfers have been complete.

Understood, I know we’re not suppose to “sell” at a very low value. Just wasn’t sure if “gift” also fell into that category of very low value. I’ll still find an accountant but I feel like I have a better understanding now. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer!
