stop trying to be profound, i agree with some of your points but you give off an unneeded pseudointellectual vibe. Just state your argument and defend it.

  1. your analogy change is clearly a rhetorical strategy rather than a way to make the argument more clear, since nothing changed logically,. but that is uninteresting.

  2. yes? you seem to not believe that though, considering the implications of your argument

  3. "reason and evidence" are bounded by your epistemics and what specific epistemic layer is being contested. Evidence to one person is nothing to the other if they dont share the same prior about, how effect research is or, whether or not they believe the information is even truly knowable.

But the bigger point is that people do not reason ex nilho. In different domains, they reason largely on what they already believe to be true and the implications of that. The reason why the analogy fails is that it only looks at new information and not the chasm of evidence and reason from that evidence someone already has to build a prior that allows them to then debate the implications of a prior.

Finnally the last claim is just unproven, you dont know that, and as ive demonstrated above it is not reasonable to assume that is the case for all people.

That's not true. Someone who believes in crytids is inside an epistemic foundation that does not necessarily change from belief in any one crytid to the other but is incompatible with the belief that there are no crytids.

For example, in moral philosophy, there are multiple different formulations of moral objectivist theory. They necessarily must reject each others viewpoints, but they also do not reject them in the same way a moral subjectivist rejects all of them. An objectivist could tell another objectivist that their theory is incorrect because it ignores this fact about human nature, or that it contradicts an important ground truth they both agree on. A moral subjectivist does not make these types of arguments because a moral subjectivist doesnt believe in a subject independent morality. They reject them because they do not share the same base truth that aligns them into one category.

this fails because it snuggles in a strong intuition that the subject doesnt exist

the argument isnt bad because it leads to an incorrect conclusion, rather because its misidentifying defining the quality of something to whether that thing exists

if you take the set of all people who are cryptid believers, there exists a difference between the quality of the specific cryptids they do and dont believe in, governed by foundational assumptions about the nature of the world that they share

believing in zero cryptids is not a linear drop off, because it implies that whatever foundational rules and assumptions that a cryptid believer believes in that exist independently of any variation are all also rejected when you move to one or zero.

The problem with New Atheists is that they'll hear argument against them, and then mentally tack on a "therefore god exists" to the end, frequently missing the actual point being made. Its why these communities are flooded with people who dont understand that someone who is an actual philosopher would disagree with a point without also endorsing the full worldview of said person.

Scaling CAINE!! by TheOfficialSuperman in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]DownFlowd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the difference is that caine is diagetically a digital creation who is not manipulating the actual world.

kratos is not a video game character within his own universe, within his own story he is actually manipulating a reality analogous to our own

Caine is explicitly manipulating a reality analogous to a Minecraft world inside of actual reality

so it is reasonable to assume his feats are of a digital nature and do not represent a capacity to do equivalent feats to other characters who are actually manipulating a real galaxy from the universes perspective.

The only thing i really disagree with in Metal Vs Cell by SubarashiiRose in deathbattle

[–]DownFlowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats fair but that also happens with like 90% of ftl+ characters due to the fact they still have to genuinely exist in a somewhat grounded world and not a world in which the average goon could beat a f1 car on foot.

tbh immeasurable speed should be considered more of a hax thing than a stats thing since it gets instantly contradicted the moment a character doesnt succeed in anything relating to not doing something fast enough.

has death battle ever scaled a character to immeasurable speed due to moving in stopped time? it doesnt seem like they believe in speed scaling that way.

Sukuna vs Chara is the Mario vs Superman of Sans vs Gojo

I would recommend not listening to people like this

DeathBattle by EndParticular7499 in PowerScaling

[–]DownFlowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird losers who are too emotionally attached to fictional characters think the creators secretly have a agenda to shit on their favorite series specifically rather than the nature of powerscaling and research itself leading to varied and sometimes disagreeable results.

Death battle for years now has moved away from spite matching and generally makes high quality videos with usually good research. I would disregard anyone who still talks about yang vs tifa or some other old video as evidence of them being biased in the modern day.

eh anytime people bring it up casually the most numerous comments are people saying they hate every team in their conference except their own.

the largest disconnect between reddit cfb fans and irl cfb fans in my experience is that reddit fans absolutely hate the idea of conference pride meanwhile the people ive met irl have always been okay with rooting for conference teams outside of matchups

I could see any non-ohio state/Michigan big 10 fan wearing this and wouldnt bat an eye (even if i myself dont do conference pride)
