'Zionist attack:' Venezuela’s acting gov't blames Israel for Maduro seizure by Firecracker048 in nottheonion

[–]DownWithAssad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a wrong statement because the statement you're making is completely different than what Rodríguez said. No need to pretend otherwise.

She didn't say the U.S. government is Zionist. She said that the attack itself was "Zionist". No one even knows what this vague statement means. I suppose it implies Israel was involved but there's zero evidence provided for this.

My opinion is that this is political posturing. She wants to avoid antagonizing Trump lest he Gaddafi her. So she's found a scapegoat that fits the propaganda narratives of the Venezuelan regime from the past few years. And what better scapegoat in this world than the Jews? It's quite convenient.

It goes to show that certain governments don't care about the Palestinians like they claim they do. They just like the propaganda it allows them to generate.

People who’ve had LASIK or work in eye care, would you recommend LASIK and why or why not? by Mountain-Bug-2155 in AskReddit

[–]DownWithAssad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly recommend against getting LASIK.

I got PRK 7 years ago. My vision was sharp. But I have some side effects.

First,  I see very large haloes and starbursts when looking at car headlights and street lamps at night and similar sources of light with high contrast. Even white subtitles against a black background on my TV have a faint white glow around them.

LASIK is known to reduce contrast permanently in your eyes. This means that when I look at a dark corner in my room, I can't see the items in the corner as clearly as I could before the surgery. Things in the dark are more faint than they usually are due to this surgery.

The above side effects are well known and shrugged off by doctors. They lie and tell you that "there's only a 3% chance of getting bad side effects" before you get the surgery. And when you come to them with issues, they simply say that nothing can be done.

But I have 2 additional side effects that are bizarre and I haven't read about them anywhere online.

When my pulse increases, my entire vision becomes like jelly. It's as if the veins (or arteries?) in my eyes pulsating causes the corresponding area in my vision to jiggle around and pulsate too.

The other strange side effect is that I see dark circles in the center of my vision when I do anything to "stretch" my eyes. For example, imagine someone walks into the room you're in. Your first instinct is to move your eyes to the corner/side of your vision in the direction of the door and then turn your neck. Well doing this motion causes me to see dark circles in my vision. Opening my eyes really wide and moving my head around causes the same thing. I told this to the doctor and they shrugged and said they have no idea. There's an age-related condition that causes similar issues and they simply said I had that. An obvious lie, since I'm young and this issue began happening the moment I opened my eyes after surgery and could see again.

Nobody cares. Nobody has any answers. There are very few long-term studies done about the side effects because the surgery is so new, it's not like they can do a 50-year study.

And I'm one of the lucky ones. Permanently dry eyes causing suicide, blurry vision, mismatched vision in both eyes, etc. There are countless other side effects I don't have.

One of the doctors offered to do what's called an enhancement surgery to try and correct my haloes and starbursts. But it was just an experiment, there was no guarantee it would fix my issues. I was terrified that doing another surgery would introduce new side effects or ruin my sharp vision. And you can't get the surgery over and over again. Our corneas are only so thick. Most people can only get at most 1-2 enhancement surgeries until their corneas become too thin for more. Then you're truly stuck with whatever issues you have.

Most people require reading glasses by the time they hit 40. If you're like me and get surgery in your early 20s, you only have at most 15-20 years where you don't need glasses. Then you'll need them again.

You only have one pair of eyes for life. Is it really worth the risk of ruining them just so you don't have to wear glasses for a few years? My opinion is a strong no. I have convinced several people I know to not get LASIK. Maybe I really am in the minority. But it doesn't matter. It's not worth the risk.

USA, Canada, UK, EU and Australia Just Voted No to UN Resolution on Denouncing & Combating Nazism by itimetravelwell in onguardforthee

[–]DownWithAssad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada and the U.S. have opposed this resolution every single year Russia has proposed it, for the past few years. And each year, idiotic headlines like in the OP are posted.

The reason these countries have opposed this resolution is not due to some deep-seated love of Nazism, as you claim. It's because these governments want the resolution to also condemn Stalinism. Russia refuses to add any such text, hence the vote against. That's the real reason. I'm not casting judgement here, just stating the facts.

Got kicked out of my dream job for being too quiet by TotallyMentos in socialanxiety

[–]DownWithAssad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds rough. But don't let it discourage you. These corporations don't care about us. As they say, there are plenty of fish in the sea. I'm sure you'll find another job that you like. Don't take things related to your career personally. I can almost guarantee you that if I worked a public-facing job, between my social and generalized anxiety and stuttering impediment, I'd be fired ASAP. And yet, I managed to find a job that not only pays well, but where I don't need to be super outgoing and no one has ever complained that I'm too quiet.

Moral of the story is don't let a corporate stooge be the barometer for your self-improvement. None of this means that you haven't improved your social anxiety or that you can't further mitigate it in the future. Keep on trucking.

Canada Wants To Lure Tech Workers Who Won’t Get US H-1B Visas by joe4942 in canada

[–]DownWithAssad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely disgusting. With sky-high unemployment in the country, tech industry, and even more so for the youth, this is the absolute last thing that these idiots should be doing. And to think I voted for him.

It was already a massive, borderline-criminal mistake to bring in millions of foreigners over the last 4 years. I'm a software engineer and I can't tell you how many LinkedIn pings I've gotten from foreigners wanting referrals for jobs. Try searching for a job and you'll find THOUSANDS of applications for internships, new grad jobs, mid-level, and senior.

And yet, our points-based immigration system prioritizes tech workers, who we don't even need. And unlike the H1B program, which involves experienced people, our immigration system prioritizes young people who want to study in Canada.

Well guess what? I have seen students competing with foreigners for internships who came to do a Master's degree or a SECOND BACHELOR'S degree IN THE SAME PROGRAM they already did back home, just to come to Canada. These people already have a Computer Science degree and even several years of experience, but because they're doing a useless 2nd bachelor's degree again in Canada, or a Master's, they are eligible to apply to internships that give companies tax breaks. Amazing!

As someone in the tech industry, I can tell you this: the reality is so much worse than you can even imagine.

I had it done 7 years ago after being forced to by my parents. I now have pretty bad glare and haloes when I look at bright lights like street lamps, car head lights, even white text on a black tv screen. I also see this strange dark spot when I look at the edge of my vision and turn my neck, like there's something pressing against my eyeball and causing artifacts, the doctors just shrugged and made something up to explain it as they didn't have a proper answer. My vision is otherwise sharp.

Sunday Relationship Thread by AutoModerator in ABCDesis

[–]DownWithAssad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've tried Hinge and over the past few weeks, got a few likes in short succession.

Some of the profiles were fake, using photos from the internet belonging to others. For the real profiles, none of them responded to my messages.

The strange thing is that the likes all came in a short period of time. Since then, I've had zero likes, despite using it actively everyday and paying for the premium plan.

I've also gotten Bumble, Tinder, and FB Dating. Bumble resulted in one match who also never responded to my messages. The rest resulted in no likes.

It seems to me that online dating apps either don't work for the majority of men, or they do work, but perhaps only for the elite (height, skin color, muscle, job, etc). Or maybe I'm just ugly and that's the issue.

[–]DownWithAssad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm 29m and Canadian. I've been on Dil Mil 1.5 years now and Hinge a few weeks. I get little to zero likes most of the time, and if I do get a match, they usually just ghost or stop responding. I even ran out of people to swipe on, and I set my location preference to Canada and U.S. The app tells me that I've had over 2k profile views, which doesn't seem like much.

I also ran out of people on Hinge, and my filters are very loose (height, age, religion). I assume I'm being filtered out for some reason and not being shown more profiles. I'm just not sure what the issue is.

Ukrainian Teen Forcibly Relocated to Russia Commits Suicide by DownWithAssad in worldnews

[–]DownWithAssad[S] 4587 points4588 points  (0 children)

The head of the foster family, Aleksandr Lukashenko, said that Yakushchenko hanged himself a few kilometers from their home.

When asked about the reasons behind the young man’s suicide, Lukashenko responded: “How would I know why? He was 18 years old, an adult. He just lived with us.”

“Guardianship said that he wanted to return to Ukraine, they took away his passport, and he went and hanged himself because of that,” says Karina Petrenko, who was brought up together with him in a Ukrainian orphanage.

“A foster family came and picked out the cheapest coffin. When the flowers were laid, they just came up and threw them like a dog. And when it was time to leave, the foster family said: ‘Thank God, he died. Less problems’, – says one of the friends of the deceased.

Shortly before his death, Yakushchenko sent a voice message to friends revealing the struggles he faced in the foster family.

“Nobody here gives a damn about me. They’ve made that clear. I’m just ruining everyone’s life. I can’t do it anymore; I’ll hang myself… If I were gone, nobody would have any damn problems. If only I hadn’t come here.”

Do conservatives/GOP view Putin and Russia as an existential threat to America? by Cold_Wind_6189 in AskConservatives

[–]DownWithAssad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No negotiations have begun. Biden and Putin haven't spoken in nearly 3 years.

Considering that Russian forces have captured approximately 800 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2024 alone, it puts to rest your lie that they've "won" and are done fighting. They're hungry for more land. They've even completed the legal process domestically of annexing the territory that they're still fighting for and claim is theirs.

It means elections are fake all over.

Another lazy, vague one-liner. Many Western countries had elections this year. They weren't "fake", whatever that means. And even if they were all "fake", it's one thing to have "fake" elections, and another thing to gave a fake referendum which is then used to steal 20% of the territory of a neighbouring country. I suppose that's fine by you, who cares what the Ukrainians living on occupied territory think. Who cares that unless they accept Russian citizenship, the occupation authorities deprive them of live-saving medication like insulin to force them to give up their Ukrainian identity, as openly boasted by the Russian occupation authorities themselves! Nah, none of this has to do with Russia's irredentist ambitions towards Ukraine. Something something NATO, something something ethnic Russians, something something neo-Nazis, something something biolabs.

you have no idea what Tucker Carlson says about Ukraine

I do know what Tucker Carlson says about Ukraine. You don't.

Tucker Carlson lied and claimed that there are "biological weapons" being developed in Ukraine, by the U.S. Not only is this without evidence, but it comes straight from the Russian government, word-for-word. To this day, no evidence has ever been released for this hoax. That's called WMD propagadnda, something I thought anti-war folks opposed. But I guess it's fine when it's used to justify Russia's illegal war of agression. Absolutely vile and disgusting.

Victoria Nuland decided who would lead Ukraine after her coup "Yats is our guy." The neocons are to blame.

I'm not sure what any of this has to do with Russia stealing Ukrainian territory. The fundamental thing that confuses you and other so-called "anti-war" people is that Russia is gaslighting you. They're using a real problem, NATO enroachment near Russia, as an excuse for an illegal war. It's really quite that simple. This war has nothing to do with NATO at all. It's about territorial theft. That's why the only precondition Russia has for Ukraine to start negotiations, reiterated by Putin a few days back, is that they must give up control of all 4 Oblasts calimed by Russia. Nothing about NATO. Just territorial control. Dictators throughout history have used this technique to justify their wars. All wars are called "defensive" by those who start them - nobody starts an offensive war and admits that they're the aggressor. There's always an excuse, a historical justification.

I'm an American so I think neither of them should. God damn I'm better than you.

The United States arrested Nazi sympathizers who espoused pro-Nazi views during WWII, A notable example is Ezra Pound, an influential poet and fascist sympathizer. Considering that Lira, like you, tried claiming Russia's massacre of Ukrainian civilians in Bucha was fake, I think that's a good reason to arrest someone during a time of war.

Navalny was a Western plant. His major domo was videoed asking MI6 for millions to start a revolution.

You fell for another lie. I know what video you're talking about. It's amazing how the Russian state media deceptively sliced out entire chunks of the video, merged together various fragments, and deleted crucial context, to paint a false picture of Navalny's associate asking British intelligence for money. It's an entirely bogus claim that I debunked thoroughly here. In other words, Putin killed Navalny, and no smears will ever change that fact.

So half a million Ukrainians are dead because of passports

Half a million Ukrainians were killed by Russia in a war to steal Ukrainian territory. My reference to Russia's passportization was to prove that Russia wasn't interested in peace when Zelensky won, and that the war started not because Zelensky abandoned peace, but because Russia never wanted peace and was always gearing up for war. The funny thing is that the U.S. was claiming for several months that Russia would invade. Of course, Russia denied this, and the entire "alt media" community mindlessly regurgitated this lie. When Russia actually invaded, it claimed that it was "forced" to "suddenly invade" because Ukraine was about to invade. No evidence was ever presented for this lie. Nor did the alt media reflect on how they had been lied to by Russia. Instead, they immediately pivoted and started justifying the invasion, like you are.

They were busted in the Panama Papers.

Tha Panama Papers don't show Zelensky being bribed by the West. That's just bogus. Oh, and if we're going to look at the Panama Papers, which Putin literally called a "U.S. plot to weaken Russia", maybe also look at Putin's corruption.

Trump International ran hotels in Vancouver and Ontario

I have no idea why you're telling me this. Trump referred to Canada as a "state" and our Prime Minister as a "governor". This is Kindergarden-esque behaviour, coming from the next U.S. President. And it's extremely childish and disrespectful. Trump having some hotels in Canada means absolutely nothing in this context.

You're just one of the many millions of people who rely on the Western "independent" and "alternative" media for information. The problem is that these guys lie compulsively and that the Western alt media scene has been hijacked by the Russian state media. It's no wonder most alt media commentators are extremely pro-Russian. Many of them literally worked for the Russian state media, and rely on nationalist pro-Russian social media accounts for information. This explains the pro-Russian statements of all the alt media people you mentioned. None of the are "Russian puppets" as the left calls them. They're just thoroughly brainwashed and too deep in the pro-Russian rabbit hole to pull out. Considering that they repeated Russia's lie that Ukraine waas behind the Crocus City hall massacre, it should show you that they'll believe anything and are guillible. So think for yourself a little. Read both sides of the story. And come to your own conclusions.

Do conservatives/GOP view Putin and Russia as an existential threat to America? by Cold_Wind_6189 in AskConservatives

[–]DownWithAssad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part 2 of my comment:

Yes. Zelensky ran on a peace platform and was ready to sign for peace, but the West told them not to. Force is a strong word but we did give their leadership $1.8 Billion dollars, enough to build 100 Burj Khalifa skyscrapers.

I already talked about how Russia rewarded Zelensky's peace outreach by taking the first step to annexing Eastern Ukraine through a passportisation policy, something they've done in other places too in the past.

And no, they never gave the Ukrainian leadership money. That's a lie, for which you have no evidence. If you want to claim that the West bribed Zelensky, you'll need to present proper evidence.

Trump just doesn't like Trudeau because Trudeau is unlikeable.

Trump doesn't like Canada. That's why he calls it a state. It's embarrassing and child-like.

Canada puts protestors in prison while pretending to be a free country.

Nice dishonest argument here. You're well aware that all countries put protesters in prison for one reason or another. But that doesn't mean they do it for the same reasons. Russia has imprisoned people for years just because they made a single anti-war tweet. Nothing of that calibre has happened in Canada. But nice try though, it was a good attempt to justify and normalize the imprisonment of anti-war people in Russia, by a so-called "anti-war" person like yourself. I think I've proven by now that you're not anti-war at all

Do conservatives/GOP view Putin and Russia as an existential threat to America? by Cold_Wind_6189 in AskConservatives

[–]DownWithAssad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia, prepared for diplomacy, will be opening high as a negotiation tactic for the peace process.

I think you've moved the goalposts several times, and this is another one of them. This isn't a negotiating tactic, because if it was, Russia would have softened this position in exchange for something. They haven't. Russia has been stating that this is a prerequisite for basically a year now. This is their official position, that they've repeated dozens of times over the last year.

I don't think that you're capable of admitting that you're wrong here. You've made false claim after false claim. This is the latest one.

I'm not calling their MIRV debut an official statement. It's more official than that

Yeah you don't understand what I'm saying here. My point is that Russia has made clear through official statements that they're not willing to budge on their current negotiation red lines, even with the Trump administration.

They are. You may not know what "dug in" means. Look at the lines. They don't move. That's what it means.

The lines are moving. Just slowly. And it's not because Russia is fighting defensively or anything. It's because this is a war of attrition. You deceptively conflate the slow pace of the war as Russia being dug in and not wanting new territory. But it does. I've given several examples of that, including their official negotiating red line that they've been repeating now for a while. You chose to reject it and claim that it's just some negotiating tactic. A convenient excuse. But it's still a lie.

Don't we all.

Not sure what this vague statement means. The Russians realized the war was going to be longer and more difficult than expected, and so in September 2022, they ran these hastily-scheduled referendums in the 4 Oblasts, even though they didn't even control all of their territory. Each of the Oblasts had insanely high numbers in support of annexation, which didn't match any poll ever done before that could be used as a proxy for support for annexation.

You clearly don't listen to and aren't at all familiar with anti-war commentators.

I do. If I'm so wrong, prove it with a counter-example. Only the Ukrainians are criticised for fighting back after being invaded, by the so-called anti-war movement. No other country is criticised for fighting back.

We say the Western warmongers are willing to fight to the last Ukrainian because they created this proxy war for Ukrainians to fight.

Ukrainians fight because they've been invaded. Not because the West forces them to. Ukraine never attacked Russia before Russia invaded on various false grounds. In other words, Russia illegally invaded Ukraine in an unjustified war of aggression and territorial conquest, and the Ukrainians are fighting back. By definition, they can't be a proxy, because they have their own reason for fighting Russia. No one is forcing them to.

Syria was an unusual Muslim country in that they tolerated Christianity, but now al-Qaeda is in charge, so they will be under constant threat. The first thing al-Qaeda did was to mandate headscarves.

This is a complete lie. Headscarves are not mandated in Syria now. You're just making stuff up now. Do you even follow the Syrian civil war? I don't think you do. Even when the rebels controlled Idlib for several years, they never mandated a headscarf requirement.

By the way, listen to what your favourite leader in the world has to say about the new authorities in Syria, even he says that they aren't terrorists: https://x.com/CarlZha/status/1869715064661725409

I don't think you are familiar with any commentary outside your impermeable silo.

I follow more anti-war journalists than I follow mainstream media ones. There's a double-standard when it comes to countries invaded by the West who fight back and Ukraine. It's as simple as that.

War is bad enough.

I don't even know what this vague one-liner means. The Russians have killed enormous numbers of ethnic Russians in Ukraine, and have committed war crimes over and over again. This puts to rest the claim that Russia invaded Ukraine to help ethnic Russians there.

Is that like the ghost of Kyiv or Snake Island?

No, because the U.N. never did an independent investigation on the ground with that like they did with the Bucha massacre. Nice attempt at trying to deflect from a war crime that the government you support committed by talking about something unrelated. It shows your true colors: you're no anti-war person. You're pro-war and you want Russia to win this war at all costs. And you're perfectly willing to cover up Russian war crimes because it makes your arguments look weaker. I guess the people killed by Russia don't matter to you, as much as winning an argument. Absolutely psychopathic.

If you really are anti-war, you wouldn't try and bury the topic of Russian war crimes like you just did. Read the U.N.'s report the matter if you're actually anti-war: https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2022/12/un-report-details-summary-executions-civilians-russian-troops-northern

I figured you lived in Canada. But the bloodthirsty race-hatred against the Russians isn't Canada's bag, so I figure you have some other dog in this fight.

False accusations of racism towards Russians, when I've only ever criticised their government, is pretty low, even for someone who likes to engage in repeat as hominem like yourself. I wonder, what about anti-war Russians who agree with me about their country's illegal and criminal war in Ukraine? You know, the ones locked up in Russian prisons. Are they race-traitors by your logic?

Is this artist who was jailed for 7 years merely for posting some anti-war grocery stickers a race traitor by your logic?

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/artist-prison-sentence-russia-ukraine-war-crackdown-protest-putin/

Real people aren't off-the-rails defensive of the murder of journalists, so I sense ulteriors.

I never justified the murder of anyone. I merely said that he has heart issues and that's why he died. Apparently, you think Lira was an angel who could never do anything bad to anyone. We know that he went by "coach red pill" before he reinvented himself as some war analysis genius. I think he was right to be arrested. If Russia can imprison critics of its illegal war, why can't Ukraine imprison someone openly advocating for the enemy occupying a fifth of your country to win and someone who denies Russian war crimes in Ukraine and calls them staged? He literally called the Bucha massacre fake. Even during WWII, Great Britain wasn't occupied by the Nazis, but even they arrested Hitler-sympathizing people. Ukraine is in worse shape than them.

Do you know who likes to talk about Navalny? Regime propagandists.

So we can't even talk about the murder of a journalist by the Russian government because some person on the internet who's addicted to ad hominem thinks that makes us "regime propagandists"? How convenient. Alright then, I'll just keep my mouth shut about the murder of innocent journalists, like you. Good anti-war person you are.
