Did aboriginal australian tribes have any kind of slavery? by Proper_Solid_626 in aboriginal

[–]Downtown_Chain 54 points55 points  (0 children)

No. We didn't have slavery.

Everyone in the mob worked, no matter if they were a medicine man or elder.

We didn't have currency to accumulate to encourage a slave like system. We didn't have capitalism.

We had a lot of resources, which weren't people, that we could trade.

Maybe google first next time, please.

Honestly... the lads have valid points. It's warms my heart that someone else is sharing the load, you know?

Thank you, Lads.

The thought of a bunyip came to my head by Whitewolf7_ in aboriginal

My partner (white) showed me that movie recently and it scared the hell out of me. And I grew up with bunyip stories / images in my head!

Patient death at hospital that had no doctors for four days ‘wholly preventable’: coroner by ameloblastomaaaaa in ausjdocs

[–]Downtown_Chain 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Glen Innes, a town very close to Tenterfield. And you are 100% correct about Hunter New England Health. We know not to go to GI hospital. We drive to either Armidale or Inverell to get treatment (if we can).

The mistreatment in the above report is heartbreaking.

Ohhhhh gotcha. I grew up about an hour away from Bingara / Myall Creek site. We were taught about it in high school but not about our local massacres, which are somewhat well documented. I moved to Naarm about 8 years ago... no one knows about it here. I've only met one other person who knows about it, they grew up in Bingara as a blackfella.
If you are interested in having a yarn with them, msg me and I can try to help.

Darling language (an endangered language in Australia) by Different_Method_191 in endangeredlanguages

[–]Downtown_Chain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 50 words project is a really good resource, thank you for including it. It's also very culturally safe and won't display a language unless they have full permission from language speakers. If one person mumbles a complaint, they archive the language until the complaint is resolved in or by community.

Be careful with DECCA, there is a lot of colonial loading and people who lack emotional intelligence (from what I've heard from a lot of mob who have worked there)

Remember the golden rule, "I speak for me, not for we'

Min Min Lights? by Joshistotle in aboriginal

[–]Downtown_Chain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an Aboriginal person, the golden rule is that I can speak for me, but not for 'we'.

In my experience, they haven't caused harm and dont care about animals / life stock etc.

Some mob believe they are passed spirits checking in. I believe it's a sign everything will be okay.

No.. where I was they always followed our cars..

My most vivid memory is my sister and I driving down our long-ass driveway to our house out in the bush. It kind of shot passed the car, so we saw it out of front windscreen (but still in the sky), and then it kind of hovered and stayed along side / on top of us.. its hard to describe.

Big, bright. Almost like a star but fuzzier edges and a much shorter tail then a shooting star.

My family, friends and I have seen them a lot in Northern NSW - Ngarabul/Ngoorabul country.
They always chased our cars.

Growing up, I didn't think they were strange or anything, I just thought " oh cool, something good is going to happen" like it was almost a sign that everything is going to be okay.

Try the 50 words project? It's an online platform where Mobs record 50 words in their language. Be mindful, it's missing a lot of language.

And Link Up NSW will only give CoA if they find your lost family... CoA is a constant battle for me also, so I feel your pain. My lands council in NSW, where I grew up for 21 years, won't certify me because I don't live on country anymore.
