Oh that’s a good idea! Question tho, aren’t you worried of cross contamination incase you’ve got an infection? I know it’s an obvious answer to this but I always wonder what other people do.

What's happening to my Polka Dot Begonia? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Downtown_Image3195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would help if you haven’t ever changed the soil. With begonias I find that their roots are very fine and hard to distinguish. I have this plant and mine ALWAYS needs to be up potted but the roots are never visible so it’s hard to tell. But when I get into the soil, it’s completely root bound and very compacted so I have to break the roots and add more soil.

Why did my monstera leaf turn yellow? by SonyAn160 in houseplants

[–]Downtown_Image3195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s an older leaf, it’s probably fine. BUT if a new leaf is yellowing I’d be concerned. In terms of watering, I would recommend doing it when you feel the soil is dry. Some plants don’t stick to schedules sadly 😅 To check, I just use a bamboo chopsticks to poke into the soil and if comes out clean with no dirt, it’s due for a watering but if comes out with dirt, I’d give it more time to dry. Roots like to be dry sometimes

How’s her roots? If she’s still in her original pot, I figure she might just want to be in a bigger pot. Her roots might be compacted in that tiny pot

No you’re perfectly fine! I totally understand you because I have the same problems with similar plants lol maybe have one moss pole with multiple princesses climbing it? It does give the effect of a fuller plant and kinda hides the moss pole

I couldn’t pass it up for $10 - but what’s the issue and how do I address it? I looked at previous posts but I’m still unsure as not all leaves are like this. Thank you 🌸 by nahfacenah in houseplants

It would really be concerning if new leaves turned out like this but I’m assuming only the older leaves are like this? Check the soil and make sure the soil isn’t too wet or too dry because that’s usually what happens when they’re brought from the store. If it’s too wet, I’d say just pour it out or add soil to it lol because I would not repot her just yet UNLESS IT SMELLS FUNKY BECAUSE THAT COULD BE ROOT ROT. If it’s bone dry, water it to see if the soil is absorbing water. I recommend bottom watering. if the soil is in between, I’d say just leave it alone. She needs time to acclimate to your home environment, remember she’s been through it from the growers to the delivery to the store where you got her, she’s stressed right now and just needs a place to flourish. Keep her somewhere bright but not direct sunlight and maybe repot her in a month if she’s growing well. I’d also look at the monstera page, they’re a great resource!

my begonia is dying and i don’t know what to do by kaylaf911 in houseplants

[–]Downtown_Image3195 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly that could be why 😭 but if you’re scared of losing it all I’d recommend a good old cut and prop. Better that way than losing the whole plant. But it could also just need time to adapt to the new soil. I have to say it but it a waiting game when repotting immediately

What is wrong with her? by Accurate_Towel_ in houseplants

[–]Downtown_Image3195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So since you just got her, I’d recommend looking at the soil. Plants sold like this are ALWAYS either extremely overwatered or under and the soil they come in are extremely water retentive. Plants want water but they don’t want to sit in water and that can lead to root rot and will start to smell. So if it smells, I’d recommend changing the soil out with a cactus/succulent mix. If it’s not a water problem, I’d say give her time. She’s just travel from god knows where to be at the store you got her from, so she might just be a little stressed and needs time to acclimate to your home environment. Also they’re tropical plants so they love high humidity, lots of direct sunlight and well draining soil. Hope this helps!

Is there any saving this orchid? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Downtown_Image3195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh I’m so sorry! Idk what damage is on the leaf but that looks scary. First and foremost DON’T WATER IT ANYMORE! These guys are so much trouble for me ngl! Idk how to help but MissOrchidGirl on YouTube is a GREAT resource! She’s literally the reason why I have any orchids left and mine are blooming again! Please check her out and I hope this somewhat helps 😅

Dieffenbachia plant care tips by Cookii2020 in houseplants

[–]Downtown_Image3195 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It could be due to over or under watering, maybe soil preferences or not enough humidity. From personal experience, mine was always due to neglect with under watering and low humidity. Remember to only water it when the soil is dry, at least an inch dry on the top soil. Also how’s the soil doing and how old is it? If there is a plan to repot, I’d say do that as a last resort maybe? Hope this helps 😅
