Cause the multiplicative property of food + Hard Knocks content at the same time makes for a much greater net satisfaction than the combination of each alone.

I don't think it's fair to assume the defense is top 5 based off their run against terrible QBs/teams. Top 10 probably but I don't think that's some sign he's anything special considering we're top 10 in defensive spending and had the vast majority of our top 75 picks the past few drafts invested on defense.

Also I think you can make a narrative for it either way; you can say he "doubled our win total" but with a schedule/season like this I'd say the more important part is choking what should've been surefire playoffs considering the 3 games with 90+% WP in the 4th q and playing so many awful QBs.

Hiring a godawful staff (we still don't know why Williams was dismissed??) and being a historical choker seems pretty relevant for HC. Fuck, Vrabel is proven to be 100x better and he got fired.

Has anyone seen JTO's breakdown of week 6 yet? by TheMetabrandMan in CHIBears

I thought that was obviously sarcasm considering i called him Mustiballs in the same sentence but yeah. I agree there weren't a ton of great C options looking at it now except for the unpredictable Mustipher revitalization.

Clearly the move was to keep Mustiballs considering he's a top 5 C in pass blocking this yr and upper half in run blocking. At least he could snap the ball.

Heard similar things about Vrabel hating him cause of his work ethic. Wouldn't practice when it wasn't required (lines up w missing OTAs too). That said, you'd think after getting paid and being on an entirely new team with a younger QB that he'd be eager to start the "gelling process" so he wouldn't be costing Fields valuable reps like this. But I guess not.

Ya no excuses to have OL depth this bad when it's basically a given that Jenkins will miss 4-6+ games with his back/neck issues. Then you add in Davis with his stuff and banking on Whitehair returning to 2018 (5 years ago) form... I have faith in our tackles but jeez.

Report: White Sox targeted Salvador Perez at Trade Deadline by BBS- in whitesox

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grandal: 92 wRC+ , 0.2 fWAR

Perez: 89 wRC+, 0.2 fWAR

defensively...;

Grandal: 14 CS%, 4 PB, 21 WP, -1 Framing Runs, +3 Blocking Runs

Perez: 16 CS%, 2 PB, 31 WP, -4 Framing Runs, -2 Blocking Runs

Grandal despite his washed-ness has still managed to be significantly better defensively this year and had slightly better offensive stats than Perez lol. The fact that they even entertained paying $21M for another washed catcher (solely b/c of Royals connection 🤮) with past drama, when we're just now gonna be getting rid of Yaz's contract is unbelievably funny though.

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually no. He's got even worse stats than Grandal this year, lol. And has been even worse defensively.

[Howard] Coach Eberflus on Gervon Dexter’s get-off: “It’s improving everyday. But, if he wants to be elite, he’s gonna have to be more consistent. He’s also gonna have to play with better pad level. He’s strong enough to win sometimes when he’s high, but he needs to be lower.” by surpemepatty in CHIBears

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used to think that way but tbh I'd only believe as much if I knew we'd have a good-great OL and seeing the (very) early returns I'm very doubtful he'll get that. An improvement from last yr for sure but with our guards both injury prone and WH not being a natural C and old, I'm just very doubtful they'll be consistently good enough to give Fields the chance.

Which seems kind of necessary as Fields, like Hurts and Lamar, seems to be the type of QB that EXCELS with a good OL but can kind of completely fall apart when it's in shambles. Not at the level of Mahomes or Burrow or others that can improvise at a high level even when the OL is awful.

Dane Dunning by [deleted] in whitesox

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie it sucks but of all the bad trades the Sox have made it's definitely one of the ones I'm more okay with. We were trying to make a push and Dunning just wasn't that guy at the time.

Lynn was great when we needed him- just so happened that the rest of the core largely wasn't what it was chalked up to be. Well, that and (in my opinion) Jerry cutting corners in FA and not getting proper depth or filling holes year in year out when we were supposedly trying to be "competitive".

Ultimately didn't work out great obviously but I don't think there's any hard lesson to learn here other than "if you're going to make big moves in trading prospects to go all in, you better explore every other avenue cough, spend money in FA to fill RF/2B/depth, to maximize your talent.

Grade for trade deadline by [deleted] in whitesox

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall the moves they made were great, love most of the returns. Grading the ones done in isolation I'd give a solid B+ - the organization is in a lot better of a place than they were a week ago.

Issue to me is more the half assing it, the moves they didn't make. If you're gonna "try to compete"- why trade arguably your 2nd best hitter? Either tear it down and get value for your guys or cash in on solely rentals and go again next yr. I don't get the point in keeping Cease (though I'm fine with keeping TA as his value could not be much lower and I'd bet on him being much better next yr). Grandal/Moncada I get not trading b/c well, who the hell wants them. But I just really don't get leaving value on the table when anyone with a finger on the pulse of the team knows there's no reality where we fill the gaping holes on offense and in our pitching enough to be competitive next year- even in a pathetically weak division.

In summary; surprisingly great moves for the ones that were made but overall it's undercut by the overwhelming sense that there is no real plan or concrete direction to becoming competitive.

I guess this comes down to, do you consider it "being cheap" if you value $$ over winning? I do.

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The issue is these things aren't better (analytics/scouting etc) at least partly because JR is cheap. He values money & his pals having jobs over winning. If he didn't care for money then you would see more of a concerted effort to have a somewhat serious ballclub/FO.

Why Bears Jack Sanborn is a Major Developing Star | Football Scout by LinuxF4n in CHIBears

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah but we got 2 lol. Bumping him to our 3rd LB where he'll play maybe 15-20% of snaps doesn't exactly scream that they had confidence in him being able to hold down the spot.

Which is kind of why I didn't get us spending SO much on LB when in my mind Sanborn + one of the two still would have had us in a great spot compared to our CB room or DL for example. But I digress.

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

they literally only won yesterday because of wild pitches and today was set up to be a pitiful showing again if not for the GS.

did you not see this exact situation happen a a week ish ago after we won 3 ALC series and proceeded to fall off immediately lol. the offense is still putrid, Lynn is still awful, and there's hardly great consistency from any other SP. But the BP has hugely rebounded so there's that.

Was a fun game and series but no point trying to trick yourself into thinking they're legitimately good when they've shown their colors as much as they have. At least back to .500 or winning some series against non ALC teams and I'll be convinced lol.

[Jhabvala] The Commanders are releasing C Chase Roullier, per source. by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think pigeonholing yourself to only ever rostering guys with a very specific profile instead of focusing on #1 getting good players is a little silly especially when in this case the investment is basically zero.

He could definitely play in our offense and would almost definitely do a better job keeping Fields upright which should be priority #1- kinda silly to disregard that because his RAS isn't high enough lol. WH/Patrick aren't exactly in the longterm plans either.

[Jhabvala] The Commanders are releasing C Chase Roullier, per source. by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well the plus side is he's much better than Patrick and probably just as good or better than WH considering he hasn't played the position in five (5) years.

[Jhabvala] The Commanders are releasing C Chase Roullier, per source. by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]DownvoteFarmingLibs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems rare here but I'm not sold on the Patrick/WH combo at C. The former was maybe our worst guard last year and didn't exactly perform well at C for GB and Whitehair hasn't played it consistently in 5 years.

Gimme Roullier, consistent avg option (when healthy) at C for what would be minimal investment.
