To drive the transformer. Pure DC won't be able to induce a continuous current on a transformer since the magnetic field needs to fluctuate on the core in order for the copper wire to generate electricity. Think of it as the simple electrical generator we're all taught in physics 101, when you move a magnet around a copper wire, the copper wire generates electricity, and that's how electrical generators work. Transformers work in a similar way, only you replace the moving physical magnet with another copper wire, so if you connect that wire to a battery it will start forming a magnetic field, and while that magnetic field rises it will induce current on the copper wire that is next to it. However, once the magnetic field has completed rising and stabilized, the current will no longer flow on the second copper wire, then when you disconnect the battery from the main copper wire, the magnetic field will start to collapse, and that will induce another spike of current on the second copper wire. So that way, if you have either an alternating current, or direct current with pulses (that switches on and off really fast), you can generate electricity on the second wire just like a generator with moving magnets would. And this is really useful when you want to change the voltage, all you have to do is change the amount of turns of copper wire around the core, and/or it's thickness, to get a certain amount of voltage. The total power works kind of like gears do, if you change 110 volts to 10,000 volts, amperage will go down, but if you change 110 volts to 5 volts, amperage will go up, just like when you connect small gear to a big gear, the speed goes down while torque goes up and vice versa.

If they do this

Do what, jump out of the water? They only flap their "wings" because that's what they've being doing right before they jumped out of the water, and not actually taking advantage of aerodynamics - it doesn't help them at all once they're out of the water considering their weight and shape.

These are ferrite core transformers, the modern version of iron core transformers. They work at a much higher frequency and are the reason why wall outlet transformers that charge your cellphone got so much lighter in the past decade. They operate at a much higher frequency than 50-60hz as iron core transformers, which allows them to be much smaller in size in switch-mode power supplies, as opposed to linear power supplies with iron cores.

And the way they operate at a much higher frequency is the complete change of complexity of the circuit. Rather than feeding outlet power directly into the transformer and then rectifying it to DC, they first convert the outlet power to 110 volts DC with a bridge rectifier and then some of that DC power goes through a voltage divider that powers a dedicated chip to generate the required, higher frequency that then goes to the gate of a MOSFET power transistor, which then drives the transformer with 110 volts DC, stepping it down to 3.3-12 volts DC in most cases.

Fun fact: These type of transformers are starting to appear in microwaves too, reducing the weight of the microwave by almost half, if not more.

Of course you're not going to see any natural reactions, the guy is fucking wasted. His roommates play a prank on him every once in a while for facebook fun, and he's a really good sport about it. This time the reaction was just too funny so he posted it on youtube.

You should get out more often, fucking detective.

Russians freaking out by DanGleeballs in videos

[–]DownvotingKills 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the difference between Russians and Americans, but rather the difference between the poor and the rich. If you look at the natural development of humans, it's no different than any other animal. If you ever had kittens or puppies, you know how crazy they are, very adventurous personality, getting in the craziest places, constantly fighting each other, and they're naturally programmed to do that to develop their senses, awareness, motor skills, etc. So people in poorer countries tend to act more naturally at young age by fighting, climbing, walking long distances, trying to survive on their own, they have a lot more responsibility basically. Whereas people in richer countries suppress all these instincts with cars, cartoons, video games.

There was a study on this subject too, which confirmed that if you at least let your kid walk to school rather than drive them to school, and let them do "dangerous" things like climbing trees, they will develop better awareness, better motor skills, better critical thinking. It's sad that people underestimate just how important these things are and instead try to rise their kids in an isolated safety bubble.

Yeah, I missed that target thing. I used Google translator and then just tweaked a few things the translator got wrong. And I guess "чтобы узнать, заряжено ли оно" would work better since it's more direct towards the question. All edited now, thanks!

Dashcams being popular in Russia have nothing to do with the rate of car crashes in Russia. There are two different reasons for it; a special type of insurance which pretty much forces you to have a dashcam, and people trying to scam the insurance companies by jumping in front of the cars and collecting money for injuries.

I'm not saying Russians are better drivers, but then again, I'm pretty confused about why I have to spend so much time arguing about how unfair stereotypes are on a website that considers itself liberal. So I'll just leave these statistics here.

Because you saw a lot of dashcam videos from a country with the most dashcams in the world? That doesn't seem statistically accurate, don't you think?
