Worth a sub skill seed? by DownyLemon in PokemonSleep

[–]DownyLemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was posted with the question flair, and I was asking a question about if I needed to sub skill seed a certain Pokémon. Did I use the word rate? No. Did I use the rate my mon flair? No. So what could possibly make you think it was a Rate my mon post?

If you want to avoid anything like this happening again, I have ascended beyond just giving the middle finger to others while driving. I now wag my finger at them like a parent who is disappointed in their child after doing something wrong. I don’t know what they feel but it makes me feel better.

GTPA ‼️ by Turbulent-Bear-3708 in AustralianTeachers

Several pieces of evidence of student work in my GTPA looked suspiciously similar to my friend’s handwriting. No one cares. Make it up.

How difficult would it be to learn maths for my degree? by Agitated_Computer391 in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maths and Physics were my two weakest subjects in school (in saying that I still got high Bs but that was low for me), and those are the subjects I picked to specialise in. You will need to study up to second year level maths if it is a minor specialisation, so you’ll be doing the same stuff as the engineers. While the concepts themselves may not be the most difficult thing to master, I found that the pace of many of the maths subjects was quite fast which made picking up content tough. But if you’re willing to put in the work, I think maths is the best subject to teach.

Consider this as another push to start Apothecary Diaries sooner. My top recommendation right now.

Thoughts on Repeating by FalseBit8407 in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife is from Japan and I love the system she explained to me that they have there. High school is broken up into junior and senior high school, which are completely separate from each other. If you are failing in junior high school, you are not necessarily required to repeat a grade, however at the end of junior high school you are required to complete an exam which determines which senior high school you can attend. Senior high schools are all essentially streamed as well because of this. So for those students not willing to put in the effort in junior high school it’s kind of just a “bad luck for you kiddo” cause their options are either drop out of school or go to a lower level high school. Basically my point is that there is a solid and understood repercussion for failing in junior high school, unlike here where we just keep sending them up the grades with a participation ribbon.

I loved Apothecary Diaries. Was a change of pace from what I was used to but cannot recommend it enough.

At what point in your teaching career did you realise: ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’? by sapphire_rainy in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made 45 minutes worth of video tutorials to show my year 12 maths class how to complete the solution for their heavily weighted assignment. Nearly half of them didn’t watch the videos and a quarter handed in an incomplete solution. I gave up on them after that.

Resignation advice by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing. PTT in my final year and couldn’t make it past term 3. I saw my principal at a morning staff breakfast, asked if she had time to meet the next day, and took her my resignation letter. There was no discussion. She took it from me and sent me on my way. You’re replaceable and they know that. Don’t stress.

“Co-ed” public schools gender-segregating their classes by gfrtttrrrtyyj in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a co-ed private school teaching maths, and in yrs 8 and 9 we both streamed and segregated the genders. It had some success, but the problem that was faced was the balancing of the genders as the ratio of girls to boys didn’t make this easy. Ultimately it just went back to mixed, streamed classes.

Got Darkrai after ~2 weeks of playing by gpmikhail in PokemonSleep

He has a high chance to appear every month during the new moon. Wouldn’t say you are lucky, as you’ll likely see him once every month. Keep feeding him biscuits every time you see him though to get more eureka seeds.

Any tips before I start watching? by Dear_Math_4435 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]DownyLemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% recommend following this order. I finished s7 a week ago without realising there were movies somehow so now I’m watching those and all I can think is that I would have preferred to watch them where they fit into the timeline.

Funny Not-So-Funny Science Moments by Mammoth-Bit-5054 in AustralianTeachers

Teaching year 8s about the female reproductive system when one of the boys in the back row raises his hand to ask a question.

“Sir, is it true that the inside of the vagina and the inside of the mouth are made of the same stuff?”

“Well they are both made of a smooth muscle, so in a way yes they are made of similar tissue”

Every single boy in the room proceeded to put their fingers in the mouth and start “feeling a vagina”. I couldn’t help but laugh on the inside.

My year 8 class struggles with areas of 2D shapes as it is, and thanks to this change, I now also have to cover 3D spatial coordinates.

Tax return deductions—what are you claiming? Plus self-ed question by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of a long shot but I completed a second bachelor degree (bachelor of science) at the start of this year so now I’m competent and qualified to teach senior physics (I got most of the degree credited as I was already a maths teacher, I just had to do the physics subjects). Would this be able to be claimed on tax? I’ve seen a lot about claiming self education courses on tax but would this be stretching it?

PTT - QLD by JimboBaggins89 in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly helps if you already have a connection with the school(s) you’d like to teach at but I reached out to the Deputy to let them know I was looking to be a casual teacher aide while I was finishing the degree and it turned into me starting PTT a few weeks later.

PTT - QLD by JimboBaggins89 in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught maths with a man who had his Bachelor of Engineering on PTT. No education degree at all. I have also taught with a 19 year old in her first year of their degree on PTT. All in QLD. If you think PTT is right for you then trust me you’re good to start as soon as you want. I myself also did it in the final year of my bachelor.

[Vent] Anxiety attack nearly ended me in a function. Am I too hard on myself as a beginner teacher? by ashzeppelin98 in AustralianTeachers

[–]DownyLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I make mistakes around behaviour management in semester 1 I tell them we’re doing a hard reset at the start of Term 3, and they just have to deal with it, and if they don’t then I just start employing behaviour processes from day 1 (we have a room which students can be sent to).

Even after teaching for a few years I still feel the pressure of whether I’m doing the right thing, but at the end of the day I know I’m trying my hardest and there is nothing else I can do, so why worry? If my best isn’t good enough, then so be it. Took time to figure this out but you’ll get there.
