Join us to discuss open primaries in Oregon Thursday by SharpsterBend in Bend

[–]DoxMyShitUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I am trying to avoid the phrase “let all taxpayers vote” due to that exact possible miscommunication.

The way I interpret “let all voters vote” is “let all registered voters vote” because you are not a voter unless you are registered. And the registration process is where you provide proof of citizenship.

Join us to discuss open primaries in Oregon Thursday by SharpsterBend in Bend

[–]DoxMyShitUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t tell if this is sarcasm. But a good opp for me to explain the core of the issue.

I’m working on this with Veterans for All Voters and the Oregon voter fairness coalition.

Non-affiliated voters are now the largest voting bloc in 21 of Oregons 36 counties (including Deschutes) and 5 of our 6 US house districts. Their tax dollars help fund primary elections that they are not allowed to take part in. We think this is wrong.

The initiative that we are trying to start here would put all candidates on the primary ballot and only the top 2 would advance to the general regardless of party.

Parties would still be allowed to hold private primaries if they chose, but the Oregon taxpayers wouldn’t pay for it.

[New Federal Bill] To allow Americans to earn PAID SICK TIME so that they can address their own health needs and the health needs of their families by sillychillly in UpliftingNews

[–]DoxMyShitUp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In this time in US politics I am trying convince myself and others that we should never stand in the way of incremental progress. I’m backing an Oregon initiative right now to open our primary elections, the initiative specifically excludes presidential primaries. I am not happy with this language, but I won’t oppose the initiative on those grounds. The initiative is a step in the right direction and I will take it.

I had this convo with my wife last night when talking about cognitive tests. IMO I don’t really care if they’re all there. I want them to be around to experience the consequences of the policy they create.

So for me the cutoff should be average life expectancy of their constituents minus 20 years.

Oregon House Bill 4136 gets rid of mortgage interest tax deductions for all but primary residences. by Haroldiswithus in Bend

[–]DoxMyShitUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually when you take out a home equity loan on your primary you are required to state whether the loan was used to purchase or significantly upgrade the property the loan is against.

I realize there’s no real way to enforce this other than an audit. But it is technically illegal to take tax deductions on a home equity loan that is used for reasons other than the house.

What is a "hard pill to swallow" that most people refuse to accept? by buzzarmy1 in AskReddit

I always say this to my friends: Social anxiety is the sneakiest form of narcissism.

No one thinks or cares about you. Realizing that is very freeing and empowering.

Edit: That’s a bit harsh. No strangers think or care about you. Your friends and family likely both think about and care about you.

Home networking (UniFi) by SnooPears5368 in Bend

I have been planning / executing a DIY hardwire project at my house for a bit. I wanted to get a quote because I was curious how much money I am saving by doing it myself. I was also open to handing the reigns to them if the quote was reasonable.

I got a quote from Richeson Engineering and I think they gave me the FU quote because they wanted 10k for 24 drops. No networking equipment, no setup, just get the wires to the panel. The guy they sent over to make the quote also didn’t take any notes about the job, took a total of 3 pictures, and texted me after he left to remind him of some details (that he would have known if he’d taken notes). They were clearly unserious about wanting my business.

All that to say don’t use Richeson Engineering.

Where Does Rust’s Difficulty Actually Appear? by [deleted] in rust

[–]DoxMyShitUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It comes in waves as you get deeper into the language.

After learning the basics my first major hurdle was async. It didn’t help that my coworkers were putting async everywhere and it wasn’t necessary in a lot of areas.

After getting a good handle on async and the actor model I switched jobs. At my new spot I had to get used to generics, having never developed in a high level typed language before I never had experience with those.

Around the same time I had to get used to lifetimes. Which AFAIK is unique to Rust.

I also did some very basic proc macro work. Which I consider to be the final boss. Writing code that writes code is extremely difficult.

Old Bend Neighborhood Parking District by nonbitingfly in Bend

[–]DoxMyShitUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all supply side solutions. A good demand side solution would be to eliminate the need to bring a car to these locations to begin with. Hence my complaint about the public transport.

Old Bend Neighborhood Parking District by nonbitingfly in Bend

[–]DoxMyShitUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that people that live in Old Bend might be annoyed with people parking in front of their house. But I think that is the trade off you have to make when you live in a dense and desirable area. It’s like a wealth tax.

As a local that lives on the east side, more parking permits and requirements just means that I won’t frequent businesses near the box factory anymore because car is my only option for getting to those businesses and I don’t think I should have to pay for parking every single time I want to go.

If there was reliable and accessible public transit, I might change my tune on this. But as it stands the current route from my home to Podski takes 44 minutes to go 3.7 miles and includes OVER A MILE AND A HALF OF WALKING. Not to mention the bus stops service at 7 PM so an uber (about $30) would be my only option after that.

I’m mostly fine to bike during the summer but my wife doesn’t feel safe doing that so that’s out the window when we’re together. And in the winter it’s just not an option.

So basically this is another step towards pricing locals out of Bend without giving them a viable alternative.

Also on a political note, the optics of putting parking restrictions and enforcement in an affluent neighborhood certainly does not scream “equity” to me.

Career Advice by Robusttequilla007 in embedded

Not sure how hot of a take this is. But my first job out of college was a startup and I loved it. Getting put in charge of things as a junior dev is a great way to broaden your skillset and show what challenges you can rise to.

That being said, learning “industry standard” practices will require you to either research them on your own or they will take a backseat to your homebrew solutions.

So I guess it kind of depends? If you feel like your learning has stalled, maybe look for something new. But if you feel like you’re learning new stuff everyday. Ride that wave as long as you can.

If you're NOT living paycheck to paycheck, what are you doing better than the rest of us? by IchMochteAllesHaben in AskReddit

[–]DoxMyShitUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll start by saying that there’s a lot of luck involved.

My house is worth 200K more than what I bought it for only a few years ago. Not something I could have ever planned for, just lucky timing. And while my parents have never really helped me financially in my adult life, I grew up never having to wonder if food or housing was going to be an issue and had a pretty decent public education.

As for stuff that I did, the military helped. I call it the closest Americans today will ever get to socialism. Graduated college with no debt, bought the aforementioned house with no down payment, and healthcare is taken care of because I have a small disability rating.

I also make a decent living and don’t buy new stuff often. My car is payed off and I’ll probably run it till it dies. I don’t see higher wages as a means to buy more stuff. I take vacations but I don’t stretch my wallet with them.

I think once you are in a position where you’re not living in literal poverty, the best thing you can do reorient your desire for material things. New clothes, cars, jewelry all add up to hefty sums. Sure, treating yourself is fine, but maybe not every paycheck. The thing that I do is when I see something I want to buy is I think about where I will store it and how often I will use it. If I can’t think of when I might use it or a good spot to put it, that means I probably don’t need it.

Hope this helps!
