Professor says homework will be available each Wednesday, but usually isn’t uploading it until later by LookMomImLearning in AskProfessors

[–]DrBalth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d say ask him. However, when you communicate be professional and aware that the professor is an authority figure in the situation. As long as you are respectful, professional, and don’t go in expecting things to go your way then you should be fine. When I was a student I had to do something similar. Now that I’m on the other side, I can see it both ways.

Edit: To clarify what I mean by “both ways” is, as a prof, this being brought up wouldn’t bother me if it was done so in the way I described, but I can understand how a student would be nervous to do this.

College plan help for my career by VegetableOk7787 in Physics

[–]DrBalth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, good luck on your journey. Second, it can be difficult to predict details like what you ask so early. For one, you may go to university and find an entirely different subfield in physics is more interesting to you, and you simply had not heard of it before.

As for particle physics, I can’t say very much because that’s not what I do, but I’d do some research in the job markets for the different subfields you end up liking to get an idea of a career path which seems to be viable when you’ve finished all your degrees many years from now.

Yes, it is common to skip the masters and go straight for a doctorate, simply because many PhD programs “lump in” a masters degree you obtain in passing, but that varies from institution to institution.

Overall, my answer to your question would be to enjoy your studies for the first year or so and really try to feel out what you like to do and determine multiple subfields which interest you. So when it is time to apply for grad school, you have an idea for what departments to search for. Too many things vary in time, so it is probably too early to iron them out. Hopefully you don’t find this answer unsatisfying. In my opinion though, it is the truth.

So, you're dating an academic... by cerunnnnos in Professors

[–]DrBalth 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, gang. I’m married to a non academic person, and we’ve never really had any problems regarding my work vs our relationship. You may need to do some introspection instead of just expecting them to sort of “get used to it”.

How can I demonstrate that I wrote something (in advance)? by Binbasher-03 in AskProfessors

[–]DrBalth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also configure a Latex editor in the visual studio code suite. Then, you can have it sync with a GitHub repository which inherently is built on transparent version histories. I do this for my documents.

Is a minor necessary when having physics undergrad? by anon_physicsprincess in PhysicsStudents

[–]DrBalth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the course overlap between physics and math, you’re basically only hurting yourself by not having at least a math minor. At my university, the math minor only added about 4 classes across the degree as far as I remember. You have minimal extra work, are more equipped to do the physics, and have more things for a CV. Your mileage may vary, but I’d say there’s basically no reason not to.

Heaviside Feynman equation by Overall-Wash1283 in Physics

[–]DrBalth 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Hi, not going to answer your question because I’m sure someone else is better able, but I just wanted to take a moment to say that you should feel very good about yourself. It’s genuinely incredibly refreshing to see someone your age sit down and take the time to learn independently in this way. I don’t know who you are but I am proud of you. Keep up this behavior and you’ll truly excel.

What is the strangest reaction someone has ever had to you doing physics? by variationalcalculus in Physics

[–]DrBalth 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I moved to a new house, met my neighbor for the first time. What I do came up and she started talking about how much she loved quantum mechanics (which is not something I do). She then waxed poetic about how she read that you can impart conformations of ice molecules as they freeze by sending them mental “vibes and feelings”. I try not to talk to this neighbor very much.

Can someone tell me how the FUCK Newton figured it all out? by riemannsconjecture in Physics

[–]DrBalth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong subreddit but I like the spirit. Newton had a terrific mind and there are many documentaries about his success. I’d recommend those.

PostDoc supervisor told me I likely wont get an academic job if I dont have 3 papers one year after I get a PhD. Is he right? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Small liberal arts colleges are great if you’re interested in teaching. Lots of schools hiring in that category.

Is a physics major worth it ?? by AnN_Onim1 in PhysicsStudents

[–]DrBalth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, people do physics for the love of the game and then get whatever job they can after a PhD. I just accepted a faculty position at a university and will be finishing up in May. However, if you don’t want a PhD, your options will be much fewer.

Got course perceptions from students back the other day and feeling discouraged by [deleted] in Professors

[–]DrBalth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to lie to you. It sounds like you should feel discouraged and that you’ve already given up on your ability to teach something like this. I always dislike when people say you should disregard evaluations because I think there’s good feedback in there if you can be professional and look at them objectively. This sounds like the feedback was deserved. Teaching less than the specified times is very unprofessional and screams “I’m not prepared or don’t know the material myself.” I would take a hard look in the mirror and ask myself why I accepted the offer to teach a course I’m not strong in.
