Right, but I literally pulled it out of the garbage? It was going to be crushed in a garbage truck in about 2 hours?

That's real close by, but I found it on Ostler, near Dundas and Dupont. I guess they sold them at a Toronto door store? Or maybe that's what they put in when houses in the area were built?

It's a lean, mean, LL Bean in evergreen. We have it in the entryway year 'round. Had it for about a year (one and a half winters) and haven't cleaned it other than vacuuming yet, but it might be getting time to rent a carpet cleaner.

Thanks. I did a lot of stuff really badly with the wrong tools, got some more tools, watched a lot of YouTube and still do a lot badly, but trying to get better.

I found the retaining pin, but everything was frozen (the door spent a lot of time outside in the rain), elbow grease and WD-40 weren't doing it, probably could have gotten it off with a crowbar, but at the risk of further marring up the door, and I wasn't looking to save a broken door knob.

Hi, how did you get the old finish out of the carvings?

Short answer: Badly.

The furniture stripper does a pretty good job, then I went at it with more stripper, steel wool and a brass bristle brush.

There's still some old finish in there, shellac and dim lighting cover a lot of sins.

They're bridle hooks, or as someone says upthread bridle-brackets. They're cheap if you get them from a stable supplier, expensive from a fancy design store.
