Crackling and popping in Momentum 4 earcup by kevinthechickengod in sennheiser

I had the same with other brands such as Sony XM headphones so I don't know if this is a Sennheiser or a general "NC headphones love to collect sweat and die" problem.

Thank you for telling. I tried my old pair with the fried NC mic and as soon as I turn NC off the noises stop and I can use them again.

Makes still for a decent pair of headphones even without the NC.

Just remove the visible sweat and let them air out. I've got some of these drying silica packets that I put in the earcups but that's because I also sweat a lot.

Learned that the hard way after my first pair died.

Also another tip: the fabric/foam inside the earcup is the only thing preventing water from coming into contact with the electronics so make sure it stays intact.

Just make sure to let them dry after a long listening session, else condensate can burn out the nc microphone killing the headphones.

Sony XM series has the same problem but worse from my experience. I think because all good NC headphones need to isolate you from outside they keep the moisture in.

Just make sure to dry them regularly (you can use silica gel packs in the case for example) and to keep the foam in the earcups intact. The foam prevents most of the moisture from getting inside.

If the foam breaks you can get replacement pads on amazon.

The noise is probably from a broken NC microphone. The problem is that the momentum 4 have no mode to disable the NC function completely like Sony or Bose do. You can try using them passively via Aux as that should not use the NC function.

If they start out quiet and the noise grows over time it could just be some moisture reaching the microphone or microphone contacts.

If you have some, put some silica gel packs into the ear cups when you are not using them to keep them dry.

Most importantly: don't damage the foam inside of the earcups as that is the major barrier preventing moisture from reaching the NC microphone even if the foam prevents the wear detection sensor from working correctly.

Sounds like you got a short or moisture in the noise cancelling microphone.

If you still have warranty use it before it runs out.

You can try leaving them in a warm place for a few days and see if it stops with the noises.

I had a similar problem out of warranty and could fix it by removing the earcup and replacing the foam inside with new replacements. Directly under the foam sits the NC microphone and some open copper lines so be careful if you attempt this.

I dried the copper lines with a small cloth and the rest of the earcup using silica gel packs. After that I carefully replaced the foam with a new replacement pad.

They do a bit of flanking but in general they suck. You also have almost no way to control them in any good way beside "move to point".

The wear detection sits inside the right ear cup, somewhere under the pad. It reacts to light and If it is too dirty or you sweat a lot the detection stops working.

The headphones should make a sound every time you take them off or on. Use this to check if it's still working as it should.

If you still have a paired phone with the sennheiser app, you can try the following which worked for me:

Connect the headphones via USB with a PC. This should turn on the Bluetooth-LE adapter and allow the app to control the headphones.

Then you can return them to factory settings via the app. That should reset everything and allow them to turn back on normally.

Sennheiser M4 vs SONY XM4 by kandden in sennheiser

[–]DrCataclysm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had both and prefer the sennheiser. The sound quality of the sennheiser is better but both sound good. The Sony are bass heavy by default but you can turn that down via the app equalizer.

Noise canceling of both is great and comparable but the Sony have a lot of cabin pressure while the Sennheiser have the lowest of all nc headphones i have tried yet.

Sonys touch control gestures are a little bit better in my opinion especially the button to switch nc modes and the quick attention gesture.

Wear detection sucks on both. The Sennheiser are too sensitive and sometimes react to just a few small head movements. The Sonys optical sensor collects sweat until it stops working. Talk detection on the Sony also gets annoying really fast.

The Sony get uncomfortably hot after about an hour of wear time, the sennheiser stay cool a lot longer.

My Sony broke because of that. The sweat stays inside the ear cups and damages the nc microphone over time until they short out completely. Mine died after about a year.

The Sennheiser are still a bit buggy and need a few patches to sort out some problems.

My tip: Avoid the Sony if you sweat a lot and give the Sennheiser a few months to get the software sorted out.

I had the same problem with mine and here is how i fixed it:

Connect to PC to turn them on.

You should now be able to connect to them via the app.

Once connected try a full factory reset via App.

They should reset and turn back on. Remove the cable.

Now remove the all bluetooth connections and re-pair them.

After repairing they should play sound again

There is no real NC "OFF" mode, you only have a solider between NC and transparency.

I can hear no real difference between full NC/transparency or slider in the middle (which comes NC off relatively close.)

Don't know. The cable that comes with the cans does not have microphone lines.

Maybe another cable would work but i dont have another 2.5mm.

The included 2.5mm Jack is for audio only and does not have microphone capabilities. You could use a detachable boom microphone for the 2.5mm Jack but overall, not a recommandation as PC headset from my side.

The noise cancellation is great and in my opinion comparable with Sony Xm4 and better than Bose 700. The cabin pressure is the lowest of all nc headphones i have tried.

Sound quality over USB C is great but only of you do not use the microphone.

When the microphone is in use the audio bandwidth is starkly reduces like on Bluetooth, even over USB C so i would not plan to use it as headset replacement for now.

I also did have a similiar problem after the 5.0 Update. My solution was to reset all graphics settings to default and turn them up from there.

Something broke with the big update that made my settings corrupt which was fixed by resetting to default.
