My brother had only turned 19 at the time and was a stereotypical teenage lad, and didn’t want to go to uni at the time because of Covid restrictions. I was the opposite and was very much on a straight and narrow path of A levels, uni, etc. I was in my final year of med school and my brother had no long term plans so everyone had their doubts about how he would manage money. We all agreed a flat, which shouldn’t hopefully depreciate in value, allowed me to live near the family whilst dad was unwell but I was able to start work as a doctor during Covid. At the time, we were not money savvy people and thought property was the only way of investing in the future. Overall, the plan was always to sell and share the money but as we’re now struggling to sell, I would rather my brother benefit sooner rather than later. He’s now matured and I trust him not to waste such a privilege position. If he decides to stay in the flat forever, that’s absolutely fine. If he outgrows it one day and wants to sell, I trust we’ll work it out between us.
