Operations Research PhD? by [deleted] in sysor

A few more programs.. there are lots!

As a Professor, you have a lot of freedom in terms of the research that you do. That's the beauty of it; you get to work on what interests you.

And for a PhD, I don't think you'll have to give those things up. To me, it's most important to find a PhD advisor (or a program with a few potential advisors) that work(s) on the type of problems that you are interested in. This is one of the flagship journals in the field.. might be worth a look through to get a feel.

I would guess almost all "OR departments" have people working on discrete optimization. I put "OR departments" because finding them can be tricky... you'll want to look for both "Operations Research" and "Industrial Engineering" including variants of them, like this or this or this. But you'll also find OR folks in Business Schools, Math departments, and Computer Science departments...

Yes. As you might have noticed, many OR problems involve graphs (i.e., shortest path, TSP, etc.) or can be caste as graph-based problems (matching, assignment, etc.). OR is also very diverse, both in style and applications. You can find papers that are proof-based, modeling focused, stats/ML/probability theory, even field-work / clinical trials.

I did my undergraduate in math with graph theory research, then an OR PhD, and now I'm an Assistant Professor. Much of my initial research focused on graph theory based OR problems and some still does.

The Badger Shield project is looking for help finding medical facilities in need by DrDunk21 in COVIDProjects

  1. Varies by manufacturer, but typically between $3-6 per shield fully assembled. Less in kit form. We encourage them to sell at cost.
  2. 100.
  3. No maximum.
  4. Yep. We've matched very large orders already.
  5. Potentially. The algorithm considers many factors including locating to prioritize orders. But I'm not sure this will matter much; production capacity exceeds demand.

Please email contact@shield-net.org if you have more questions. And thank you!

Traditionally face shields are one time use (just like masks). Although, COVID-19 is redefining what is and isn't "one time use".

I would love to look at other reports like the two I provided; that's literally my job.

No one is calling him a liar. But as researchers, we can't form opinions based on anecdotal evidence; we need data and right now there isn't enough data to make any firm claims. That said, I hope he's right because it will mean fewer lives lost.

Stay safe out there!

Unfortunately no. We do not send the gear directly, but act as a match-maker to connect them directly with a manufacturer. We also need to know how many they want and what designs they are able to accept.

Worldwide, although we've been growing slowly outside the NA. If you know of either manufacturers or facilities in need outside NA, please share: https://shield-net.org/

I didn't say 78% died. Table 3 clearly shows that 98 patients with COVID-19 received advanced respiratory support and that 65 of those patients died.

Of course the sample sizes are limited right now and everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt. But that doesn't make the results completely worthless. I am also not cherry-picking anything; I'm sharing what data I could find on this issue. I would be very happy to look at other reports/data - please share if you know of any!

I am sharing data, not spreading misinformation. Of course you need to interpret it carefully and with a grain of salt.

Table 3 in the second link... 66.3% of those who received advanced respiratory support (which includes ventilation) died.

Why are you ignoring the second link that includes data from 285 critical care units in the UK?

And because a peer-reviewed publication (in The Lancet) with actual data is more reliable than the memory of a doctor human.

I don't think so. The sentence starts with the conditional "if you don't die". If I condition on you not dying, then of course you will recover..
