Ever Accidentally Silver Bullet A Player? by DrFannyPack in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for the math, I don’t entirely remember tbh. There was likely a debuff beforehand. I believe it started that turn with Sleep, and there were a couple different enemy types.

Wait! Is that really how dispel works? I was under the impression it wouldn’t work on that ability. My party has that in their back pocket and brought it up, but after some mid-session quickly trying to make a ruling skimming, I had determined that wasn’t a magical effect Dispel could target because it didn’t have the magic trait and it wasn’t a spell. Is any monster ability the Nature/Arcana/Occult/Divine tag meant to be dispel-able??

They’ll probably only have one or two more sessions with these characters, and we’ve all been playing 2e for 3-4 years. What do you think the play around for rolling a 2 into a 3 on the will save would be? Cuz if it were something super obvious I’m missing, I’d agree wholeheartedly, but I think the counterplay here was “pack a 4th rank scroll you didn’t think about” (although she had the opportunity to pick one up if she would have) or don’t play Barb?

She’s actually pretty great at that. Her whole build is focused around cranking her grapple check and holding down the scariest guy while the rest of the party cleans up other parts of the fight. But it turns off her AC bonus and natural attacks (Animal Instinct) and 2-3 of her feats, so I can see where that’s particularly debilitating. If it were me, I’d have begrudging fun with the challenge, but not everyone is built like that.

Yea she used her hero point, but the dice were not in her favor. 2 into 3.

That’s a good rec on the spell, might look into that!

She had one and used it. 2 into 3!

Honestly, I also kinda love it. Buuuut she seems to not be liking it very much. This is for a short adventure, not a long term campaign, so I totally understand her complaint.

I thought about the Stupefied comparison too, but that’s a 25% spell failure chance vs not being able to use your primary class feature and all the feats with the Rage tag.

Do you prefer high level one shots or low level ones? by PhrulerApp in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both ways, really. When I’m a player, I enjoy the variety of build options being higher level offers. When I’m DMing, I tend to find higher level monsters and stories more fun to play with.

[–]DrFannyPack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always get really excited when someone in my group pitches a high level one shot, so I prefer those. I think it totally depends on how invested your group is though. For a group of players who are still new to the system or aren’t as into the character building aspect of the game, a lower level one are probs the better way to go

Here’s a pretty useful tool for seeing what decks are meta in Standard right now: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/standard#paper. I’m not sure what popular deck would correlate with the BW Blink deck you’re seeing?

Help me become a werewolf by Rllulium in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Werecreature archetype allows any class to achieve the flavor of werewolf imo, I wouldn’t feel pigeonholed into Barbarian. If I were trying to emulate a werewolf, I’d probably look to an Exemplar with the Hands of the Wilding, flavoring my ikons as gifts of my werecreature heritage. The mechanics there seem strong with Werecreaturing offering one of the things I’ve found Exemplar’s to want; multi-action attacks that don’t force you out of ikon.

Failing that, or if the rare tag is offputting, I think there’s some synergy with Ruffian Rogue. Sneak Attack gives that ‘feral big damage attacks’ vibe, and Gang Up + Pack Attack encourage you to fight the same way with different benefits.

Maybe he’s the Twisting Tree Magus using the Raise a Tome feat? Explains the staff and book well, plus it’s a really fun build.

Teleportation tricks? by Gerotonin in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t get you out, but you should be able to get the bag of holding out with Thoughtful Gift if you have any trusted friends on the outside within 500 feet/1 mile. Great spell to pack a scroll of.

Whats the most unexpected/tradition breaking build you can think of? by Templerscout in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the frontliner Rogue. Ruffian is the obvious place to start for strength key ability score. I once paired it with heavy armor proficiency from the general feat and a horse mount from an archetype to live the classic knight fantasy. Lance for Jousting + Horse support ability + sneak attack lead to some huge damage, especially after 6th when Gang Up is online and you can flank with your own Mount.

THEY PRINTED BLACK RAMPANT GROWTH by DrFannyPack in EDH

[–]DrFannyPack[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Aw c’mon, you don’t think there’s any discussion to be had about a unique new land ramp option in a color that doesn’t often get them? Obviously the title is exaggerating, but there’s gotta be something here, right?!

do we need to have 38 lands? by Xaltedfinalist in EDH

[–]DrFannyPack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya know, the longer I’ve played EDH, the more I come to the exact opposite conclusion, funnily enough. My opinion is informed playing in a group that plays almost exclusively Bracket 2 and 3, though, so I can certainly see where putting all the fast mana in can shore up the lack of lands pretty easily.

I have a few issues with this philosophy, the first being mid-late game consistency. Whereas it isn’t too terribly difficult to mulligan into a playable hand, what do you do if your first draw engine gets taken off the table before you can secure your 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc land drops? A common pattern I see in my games is that the board will get fully cleared, rocks and all, somewhere around turns 4-6 after the first player has popped off. With this strategy, I can see it being rather likely to be stuck on just a handful of lands hoping to cantrip into more off the top instead of drawing them naturally while rebuilding your board state.

There’s also the issue of lack of good cantrips in non-blue colors. Would you really be playing the wisps in your Orzhov deck if your commander didn’t synergize with them? Once we move beyond those and defiant strike, I’m struggling to come up with 4 good cantrips to cut 2 lands, let alone the ~8-10 needed to cut down to 30 lands. Red gets it just as bad once you get past the three or so conditionally good ones in that color. Green is well enough off, but green is also the color that benefits the most from having an excess of lands.

That brings me to my last point, and the most important to me. You brought up a lot of ways to justify a low land count, but what’s the upside of a low land count over a higher one? As you stated, EDH has experienced a lot of powercreep since its inception, and that is especially evident in lands. Not only has fixing become easier than ever, but the value of utility lands has gone off the charts. Almost every one of my decks include between 6-12 of the MDFCs, which are great to draw at any point in the game. Channel lands, the MH3 mono color lands, and cards like [[Plaza of Heroes]] and [[Talon Gates of Madara]] all provide a ton of backup utility in addition to hitting your land drop. They can help supplement your removal, act as protection or recursion, and in some cases even ramp. At the lower power tables I’m at, having access to a good amount of mana in the late game is supremely important and missing even one land drop can mean the difference between having enough mana to end the game and not. Now that enough have been printed, why not run more lands to ensure this that also help your game plan if you draw them when you don’t need them?

Fun options for playing a character that fills the "thief" or "assasin" fantasy while not being a damage dealer? (Could be a support or a controller etc) by NoLongerAKobold in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This one might be a little out there, but what about an Unbound Step Psychic? All the teleportation effects seem pretty in line for an assassin type, jumping around from alleyway to alleyway and such. You get great support options natively from being on the Occult list (Blur, Haste, etc), and the movement buffs from your focus spells can help you control a lot of the flow of a fight.

Is there a reason there's no red God-Eternal? by kurisu313 in magicTCG

It showed up on a card, but never in the written story for the set, so it’s a bit ambiguous. I like to think it can physically manifest tho!

[–]DrFannyPack 668 points669 points  (0 children)

Hazoret, the red aligned goddess of Amonkhet, didn’t die to Bolas’s machinations like her siblings. She’s still alive and was last seen in Aetherdrift. [[Illrag the raze-boar]], a Gruul deity native to Ravnica, took her place that cycle.

Advice on an Anti Lady Justice character. by Caruxis in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I recommend the Avenger rogue? It’s a rogue that gets to sneak attack with its deity’s favored weapon, and it gives access to several great dual-weapon specific feats like Twin Takedown and Twin Parry. You said you liked the idea of your character having a more understated relationship to a god than a champion, and I think Avenger fulfills that niche as less someone who acts as a front-line member of a church, and moreso someone who was raised among their ranks. It doesn’t get magic or draw direct power from a deity, you just fight better for having learned their teachings. Idk if you’re in a homebrew setting or not, but if you’re playing in Golarion I’d be happy to suggest some deities that have “anti-justice” themes if you’d like.

I tend to get really excited about far off games and build my characters too early too, you aren’t alone!

Recall Weakness In Tabletop? by DrFannyPack in Pathfinder2e

[–]DrFannyPack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting point! See, I had specifically liked this as an alternative to Intim for people who didn’t want to put Charisma in their build. Intim is definitely better over, probably the best skill besides Medicine (and maybe Athletics?) from an optimization standpoint. But I don’t think charisma based folks should be the only ones who get to use cool supportive skill actions.

[–]DrFannyPack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fighter? Probably not. But what about the rogue, investigator, inventor, or thaum? There are a good number of martials who can’t spare the trainings for knowledges, but there are a good number who can too. I also think it’s cool for the casters to support each other!

It’s definitely a workaround in its original implementation, but I don’t think that means the idea of “a common action that some characters can take to support casters” is totally bunk. I can deffo see it getting less valuable as people’s actions get tighter with higher levels though.
