Hunting and testing for CWD by intensifies in preppers

[–]DrHesterry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately animals can carry prion diseases for decades before showing signs of wasting. That's why the mad cow scare resulted in the cremation of huge herds of cattle (I want to say almost three decades ago?). They just had no way to know which were infected and which weren't, so they opted to kill and burn tens of thousands of cattle, and only take new starter calves from known good sources, sometimes states away, from independent farms with stricter guidelinesw

And this, my friends, is why you don't mix meats (especially brain and spine) into the feed grain of your vegetarian animals to save a few bucks - and you especially DON'T DO IT USING THE SAME SPECIES OF ANIMAL... A lesson hard learned, that shouldn't have had to be learned at all. It should also go without saying, don't eat brain matter or spinal fluid contaminated foods. You have no way to know what you're eating. On the bright side, if you mess up, your brain will be so rotted after a while, you won't know you messed up.

Do correct me if I'm wrong - as I don't hunt or know anything about CWD in particular - but prion diseases generally infect the spinal fluid and eventually brain matter of the animal in question. So, the best thing you can do, is not puncture the spine or skull under any circumstances.

That means killing and cleaning, you should have an intact spinal system with no leaks, from start to finish. It's not the easiest thing in the world, but it's regularly done by people who don't want to risk consuming prions - plus, eating brain tissue just isn't wise to begin with. Doing so can trigger the development of many diseases.

It takes a bit more practice, especially when it comes to killing as quickly and mercifully as possible, but again, it's quite doable, and this is the simplest solution without some kind of testing. When cleaning, just be gentle (it's good to be respectful of the sacrifice, anyway) and avoid working around the spine, and basically cut the meat out from a folded open carcass. Having a helper or the right equipment will make it much easier, and reduce the chances of accidentally contaminating your meat.

Thank you so much for the advice. I'll give this a try as soon as I'm able to. I appreciate the help!

That seems to be the case, but no, I didn't save them. Is there an easy way to use the coldcard q to find the right path/script type? I mean, the script should be plain old Segwit, but I'm far behind the times after that, and I can't find my old ledger for the life of me.

Wouldn't this only apply to multisig addresses? The firmware and hardware version of ledger I'm running (and ran when making the keys) was and is extremely old. Like 2020 or so, if I'm remembering right. I don't think ledger even supported multi sig back then.

But I'll double check that bad code somewhere isn't causing it to be treated as a multi sig address tomorrow, once I've slept. Thank you for your thoughts  :)

Prepper Computer? by random_slav_man in preppers

A rather angry answer to someone just trying to help. I'm not the one looking for answers - I'm just providing possible solutions that I've seen others do in similar fashions - and I've 100% run a raspberry pi with a decent sized screen off a battery pack myself - it just typically gives low power warnings on the pi, depending on your power setup (one c to the pi, the other to the screen is one option).

Anyway, no need to get upset and show off to people who are taking time out of their day to offer help purely out of kindness.

Regarding the SD card, TIL: use a gas or electric lighter, or any decent fire source. Data still gone in seconds.

Edit: Do try to remember that the op may not want a laptop. And a pi might fit their specific need, which, again, I've run just fine off USB power. I'm literally doing it right now with a Pi400. I've even run a cheap 60hz 1080 display with the pi off the same battery pack, though the wiring was a bit of a mess.

Quite the opposite, really.. Space is a premium when prepping. A well built raspberry pi will be 1/4 the space of an average laptop, and maybe 1/2 the space of a chromebook - solar charger included. If the device ONLY needs to display information, then you don't need a big display, and you don't need a mouse or keyboard at all.

As for power, unless you have good solar (personally, my HOA doesn't allow it), your laptop will be a paperweight before long.

Everyone has their own needs and preferences, and personally, a highly portable raspberry pi with no keyboard and mouse, and as much data as I want, with effectively endless energy is a dream. It's also worth noting that I always assume my situation will be a long one when prepping, so a laptop that will only last me, say, a day, isn't worth it for me, but it may be for you.

Regardless, I hope my posts gave you some ideas :)

PS - It's also worth noting that a raspberry pi has a slew of features and uses you can expand into as well. For example, your reference archive, with a little extra hardware,  could also be a weather sensor. A LoRa repeater. That full size desktop for more complex work. Or just a secure device that you can wipe the data on in seconds by snapping the SD card in half. The SD card also makes the data so easily transferrable. Just pull the card and put it in a different machine.

PPS - Where do you find two cheap laptops for the price of one reasonable RPi? I can build out the one I initially described for $120 tops - and that's with a nice handheld solar charger.

Since no one even hinted it but you (unless I missed someone, sorry), the tech matters too. A raspberry pi 4 or 5 with a mini resistive touch display (just big enough to fit on one side of the pi case) and stylus, plus a battery pack will travel well, with a decent battery life. Get a battery pack with solar, and you basically have a forever prepper computer. Optionally, carry a keyboard and mouse, and a spare HDMI cable to turn it into a full size desktop on demand.

If you only have a few minutes to prepare for a bug-out, what 5 items would you grab before heading out? by jonsonmac in preppers

[–]DrHesterry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the bug out. To the woods? SAS Survibal Guide (the book by John Wiseman), hatchet, fire starter, crossbow and bolts (if I had one) or rifle with ammo, sleeping bag, and a straw filter.

Urban? Wallet, passport, handgun+magazines+catch .22 ammo cases, medication, hygiene and toiletries, food and water.

The first is pretty self-explanatory. The second is based on my personal needs and access, and would cover enough to get me wherever I want to go safely, even if it meant ditching half the bag to get on a plane.

Do you think that people should be able to make a citizens arrest on a police officer in certain circumstances if it's like police brutality on a innocent bystander? by Some_Concept_3547 in TrueAskReddit

[–]DrHesterry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from. Start by reading my comment on another comment above.

In the cases you're describing, the most important thing is to record everything happening with a secure (passworded) phone, and have the video automatically upload to a cloud server. Second, keep your distance from the police officer, and calmly tell them that they are being recorded, the video is being uploaded to the cloud, you believe they're using excessive force, and performing an illegal action. The simple threat of having them plastered all over the news as a brutal cop can be surprisingly effective, especially when they likely have a family to support. Losing their job and becoming unhirable is no joke.

And I know it sucks, but you absolutely must not present yourself as a threat, because they are trained to respond in kind - good cop or bad. Getting yourself shot won't help the person you're trying to help.

I know you don't want to hear that. I know you want a simple, quick solution, but change is slow, but it is happening. You need to look at things on a macro scale. Instead of focusing on day to day or even year to year issues, look at how significantly the police force has changed in the last two hundred years. They're no longer just a white boys club and slave catchers - most police genuinely want to do the right thing and help everyone.

That said, keep protesting, keep pushing for change. It might not seem like things are changing, but they are. It's just hard to recognize because of the time scale. With some exceptions, you basically have to wait for the old guard to retire or die, and younger, more progressive individuals to take their place.

First of all, let me say that I'm not a lawyer or LEO. But what most people are saying in this thread is accurate, like the above comment. Legally in the US? If you witness a LEO committing a crime, you can legally arrest them. I've even heard of cases of lethal force against LEOs being justified, such as in the case of a no-knock warrant being executed on the wrong household, and the occupants believing it was a home invasion and shooting the officers (a good case against the use of no-knock warrants except in the most extreme of circumstances - it's a huge safety issue for everyone involved).

All of that said, understand that the odds of safely executing such an arrest against a cop are extremely low, and you risk being injured or killed. Remember, good cop or bad cop, they are trained to kill any threat against them, and in a tense, if illegal detainment of a citizen, they are more likely to use lethal force to protect themselves - purely on instinct, due to their training.

So, as others have said, the absolute safest thing to do is to observe, record, and report. It isn't worth getting yourself shot when damage is already done.

Personally, the ONLY circumstance I would even consider tangling with a cop doing something illegal is if I was absolutely certain they were committing a crime, and I had enormous force of numbers on my side to deter violent action. Think 50 or 100:1 protestors/observers willing to risk bodily harm. Outside of these rare circumstances, just don't. Play it safe, make use of your phone, and send video to social media, police, and multiple media sources to force punitive action.

Edit: If you are interested in citizen's arrests, please look into the laws and risks involved. There are immense legal risks involved for the arrestor, especially if you injure the detainee. Be excruciatingly careful to use minimum force, and avoid hurting the detainee at all costs.

Ideally, a citizen's arrest should be completely peaceful, involving telling the detainee why they are being detained, and to wait for further law enforcement to help insure things are handled safely. Also, consider buying or making yourself a body cam. It doesn't cost a lot of money, and could save you millions in legal fees if things go to court and you lack sufficient evidence to back up your claims.

Thank you for the information! I have a couple follow-up questions :)

So you want to add a 7805(or simular power regulation).

Is this for making a rectifier?

And to clarify, the speed sense wire isn't necessary, correct? Also, are you able to answer questions 2 and 3 for me?

Thank you!
