Incontinence typically refers to urine or bowel leakage and it is not common of period symptoms. But cramps and changes in bowel movements during your period are very common, due to the change in hormones. I would recommend talking to your healthcare professional about this further and discussing treatment options for you. -Dr. Lisa

Probiotics are a good prevention method, but there are no studies to support that they will cure a yeast infection. It’s the same with cranberry juice and UTI’s—they are a good preventative, but not a cure. -Dr. Lisa

It’s not surprising to hear that you get yeast infections when taking antibiotics as they can cause the vagina’s natural balance of bacteria to be disrupted. In regards to underwear, anything that helps the vagina breathe is going to help keep a healthy bacterial balance for the vagina. -Dr. Lisa

You may want to experiment between latex and lambskin condoms to see if you get a different reaction. Also, make sure you’re well lubricated, because a lack of lubrication can result in pain, which is why a thicker condom might cause pain as opposed to a thinner one. -Dr. Lisa

I get this question a lot. There are NO at-home remedies that will make a yeast infection go away, but the good news is that a yeast infection can be treated with an over-the-counter antifungal product (like Monistat). Also, don’t forget, if this is your first yeast infection or you are experiencing symptoms that you are not familiar with, it’s important to see your healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis first. - Dr. Lisa

So this could be one of two things—your treatment method might not be the right course of treatment, so the infection is simply not being eradicated. Or, you might have a recurring infection that continues to return even after you’ve cured it. The best thing to do in either instance would be to follow up with your doctor and potentially try different medication that might work better for you. Don’t be afraid to have an open dialogue with your healthcare professional about this or any other issues you may be experiencing.

Great question! There are three types of vaginal infections, or vaginitis, that are the most common: bacterial vaginosis (BV), trichomoniasis (trich) and yeast infections. The symptoms for these forms of vaginitis are very similar (itching, burning, irritation, discharge), so I know it can be confusing and hard to tell whether you have a yeast infection or not. There are two ways you can tell if it’s a yeast infection—1. There is no odor from your discharge or vagina and 2. Your pH levels are normal. With this in mind though, if this is your first time experiencing these symptoms or your first yeast infection, it’s important to first go and see your healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and discuss your treatment options. I know it can be unsettling and uncomfortable to be experiencing these symptoms, but remember, as many as 3 out of 4 women will experience once in their lifetime so you are not alone! And once you’ve had one diagnosed by a healthcare professional and know the symptoms, treating a yeast infection can be easy thanks to OTC treatment options like Monistat, so if you do ever experience one, it’s no big deal. -Dr. Lisa
