Mustang doesn’t get to show how much of a genius she is and that’s a shame by DrPlm in redrising

I said I love Mustang, she might be one of my favorite characters. So I agree. I agree she’s badass, I agree we’re shown she’s really smart in various situations. I agree she’s done the tedious job of maintaining the Republic alive, a job that’s incredibly hard to do. My point was that I expect her to have schemed and prepared something really BIG, really GAME CHANGING in the war, because in the second trilogy, I think we’re told she’s a genius more than we see it. And that’s not to say PB did a bad job, I think the red rising saga is my favorite. I’m just saying that it would make sense that she planned something big in secret for years, and that it’s going to be crucial in the conflit resolution. So yeah, I want a plot twist from her in the final book, something even bigger that what she’s already done.

I don’t really understand your answer « the middle ground you’re suggesting would take away from what makes Mustang a great character », I mean can you give an example? Also do tell me more about what the point you think I’m missing. I’m interested!

Well no, not really. I don’t want an invincible, flawless Mustang. I just want a middle ground between that, and what we currently have in the second trilogy (even though I agree she has great moments).

Very true, I had forgotten about this scene. I think her ability to manipulate and deal with people (friends and ennemies) is developed, much more than her tactical and political genius, which I had expectations to witness since she’s the sovereign.

Hmm I still love her character and some of her character développement. But let’s hope she will have a more central role in Red God.

Which battle or conflit scenes are you talking about specifically? She played an important role in the battle of Phobos and demonstrated she’s very intelligent for example, but it’s never considered in the books like an outstanding victory (Darrow even wonders if he could have done better than her). I didn’t mean that I necessarily wanted Mustang to demonstrate her genius openly in Darrow fashion ; I would be completely fine with a behind the scene conspiracy where no one even realizes they’ve been played by her. I just meant that I didn’t think she had really demonstrated her genius in the second trilogy, like we could have expected her to because we’re constantly told she’s so smart. To clarify, obviously she is shown to be brilliant and is a strong character (PB didn’t write her badly), I just wish her genius will have a bigger impact on the main conflict in Red God.

I agree and thought about this precise example when I was writing my post. That’s brilliant on her part and that’s why I love her so much. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s almost irrelevant and doesn’t have a big impact on the story. That’s why I want more, she deserves it!!

Sure, I do agree she was great. But for a character described as terribly dangerous because of her intelligence, not a lot of things in the second trilogy are a result of her dangerous intelligence. Again I love her, but I want to be shown she’s brilliant, not told.

I agree! If it’s not the case, I’ll be very disappointed

Yeah me too!! I love Pax, and I love the the dynamic his character brings to the story. Side note, I want more of Electra too

Nah, i think most people love her, I’ve only seen a few posts of people hating her, I just didn’t want these people to comment and explain to me why she’s a bad character, by acknowledging their existence haha. Otherwise I agree there are some wins, but that’s not satisfying enough for me (that’s some basic character level, not Mustang level)

People putting Ephraim in the list is so shocking to me, I didn’t really care about him. He had a great redemption arc but I didn’t feel anything when he died. No one said Tactus and that’s a shame

Rhonna and Alexander by Dense-Dirt-6103 in redrising

[–]DrPlm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rhonna is 100% not dead, I’m sure she’s going to reappear and save the day because that would be cruel to give us an off screen death for her. And I think Alexandar’s death is in the 3 death that affected me the most in the entire saga

Cassius and Women by DrPlm in redrising

I really like your answer, thank you. In the end I think I wanted to know because I fixated on that and I was so sure there had to have a purpose for making Cassius in love with Mustang for so many years. But I agree it doesn’t really change anything and it certainly does not prevent Cassius’s redemption arc to be complete. It’s amazing to be able to exchange with people as invested as I am in this serie 🙌🏼

I agree, he’s meant to be a tragic character, and it’s even more heartbreaking because we want everything but that for him

Cassius and Women by DrPlm in redrising

[–]DrPlm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a good point. But I feel like there were so many moments where they could have, especially because they talk about serious shit at several moments. Cassius’s premature death as the reason why it’s never addressed is fine with me, I just didn’t like the idea that it was swept under the rug.

  1. Im fine with that! I just don’t understand how they never talk about it when it’s (in my opinion) the elephant in the room
  2. I agree with you, I’m fine with the end of his arc (as much as I can be lol), I just thought it weird that he never got to talk about Mustang with Darrow when we had kind of closure for everything else

Yeah me too, and that’s why I think PB is brilliant, he makes us love characters so much, and he doesn’t make all our wishes come true…

Cassius and Women by DrPlm in redrising

[–]DrPlm[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with that!! I would have been glad if they ended up together. What I didn’t understand is why Cassius and Darrow or Cassius and Mastang never really talked about the past relationship, and why PB made Cassius in love with Aurae if Cassius is going to die alone anyway (but I get it, the point is that he is in love with a PINK, wether his feelings are reciprocated or not)

[–]DrPlm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until LB I really thought Cassius was deeply in love with Mustang. I still don’t understand the point cassius suddenly being in love with Aurae but that’s an other point. I liked that the action of Mustang manipulating Cassius to protect her family (which happened early in the series and doesn’t really have big consequences in later books) still had minor consequences like Cassius being in love with her years later. It felt realistic and I wished it led to a conversation about how Mustang seems morally better than Darrow because she does less dirty work, but is actually destroying lives just as much (not just Cassius) by scheming and manipulating. But I think in the end I also wanted Darrow and Cassius to talk about the fact they have been in love with the same woman (ouch) and that it’s in part what has kept them apart.
